SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Gas and Electric is asking state regulators for permission to rebalance electricity rates next year in a way that would lower bills for customers during the summer but keep annual costs about the same.Currently, SDG&E customers pay a few cents more per kilowatt hour during the summer compared to winter rates. The seasonal pricing is designed to promote energy conservation in the summer when demand is highest, but it has also sparked complaints about high bills, particularly last year.In response to the complaints, the utility is proposing flat rates year-round, said SDG&E communications manager Wes Jones. "Simply put, we're trying to benefit our customers," Jones said. "We recognize they need a lot of power in the summertime to cool their homes."The new year-round structure would lower bills during the summer but result in higher winter bills than customers currently pay.Jones said reducing price volatility will help families budget for household energy expenses and mitigate summer sticker shock.The proposal would apply to all residential customers, including Time-of-Use, non-Time-of-Use and electric vehicle pricing plans. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Residents in a senior mobile home park in Oceanside are worried about speeding drivers after two ducks were hit and killed Wednesday. Neighbors told 10News a mom, dad and baby duck were crossing the road around 5 a.m. when a newspaper delivery driver ran them over.Several residents reported that the driver responsible delivers the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper and regularly speeds on their narrow roads.The UT told 10News their carriers are employed by a separate company but issued the following statement: "We have learned that a carrier from an independent distributor, who delivers The San Diego Union-Tribune, may have been involved in an auto collision involving a family of ducks. Safety is a priority for us and we support safe and respectful work practices among the vendors with whom we do business. We share the concerns of the residents and encourage the distributor to review the incident and address any unsafe practices." 970

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is getting its first round of Pfizer vaccines to fight the coronavirus next week, but the vaccine is recommended for those 16 years and older.Many parents are concerned about what that means for their children and going back to school."Essentially the Pfizer vaccine wasn't studied in kids under 12 but we are going to see more study in them," Dr. Abi Olulade, with Sharp Family Medicine said.While Pfizer is working on a child-safe vaccine, their competitor Moderna started testing their vaccine on 12-17-year-olds Thursday.Dr. Olulade sees the newly approved Pfizer vaccine as a lifeline, "we have a weapon now in the war against this virus and we're all breathing a huge sigh of relief."The vaccine a relief for our healthcare system swamped with coronavirus patients.When a shot is approved and safe for kids, Dr. Olulade said it's important parents have their kids vaccinated."Vaccines have a very long and proven safety record in kids," Dr. Olulade said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County Vector Control officials reported new signs Friday of the potentially dangerous disease tularemia on a trail in Sorrento Valley.Several batches of ticks trapped along Lopez Canyon Trail tested positive for the disease, also known as rabbit fever.The first group of ticks with the disease appeared last week, officials said.County officials posted warning signs for hikers. Vector Control will also expand tick trapping in the area.The best way for people to protect themselves from tick bites include insect repellent for humans and pets, and long-sleeved shirts and pants.Tularemia can be treated with antibiotics but it can be fatal. 679

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego area firefighters are being thanked for their hard work with free admission to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.Firefighters and up to three guests will receive free one-day admission to the Escondido park in September.The deal is being offered by California Coast Credit Union and San Diego Zoo Global.“Firefighters are true heroes and we are proud to join San Diego Zoo Global in recognizing them for their tremendous efforts to keep us all safe from fires,” said Cal Coast President & CEO Todd Lane. “As part of our partnership with the City of San Diego, we will continue to look for ways to serve and support San Diego Fire Department personnel.”The fast response of San Diego County firefighters was critical in putting out the Pasqual, Rangeland and Cloverdale Fires near the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
