NANCHANG, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang has called for better understanding of new changes in the society, the nation and the world at large and urged more research and efforts in promoting social stability and harmony.     Zhou, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the call during his visit to east China's Jiangxi Province on Wednesday. ROME, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ambassador Sun Yuxi announced Chinese culture year in Italy at a press conference at the Chinese embassy here Friday.     The culture year, which follows Italian year in China in 2006, will officially start in September.     "The Chinese culture year in Italy is set to be a central obelisk supporting further exchange between the two countries. It is a crucial project on which both governments have long been working," said Sun.     The ambassador said nine Chinese central government departments and 22 local authorities would be involved in organizing more than100 events all over Italy, including performances of traditional Chinese musical bands, dances and operas. BEIJING, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang met here Thursday with Sadako Ogata, president of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).     Li said China-Japan strategic and mutually-beneficial relationship has entered into a new stage and it is in the fundamental interests of the people to stick to China-Japan friendship and mutually-beneficial cooperation.     Li said that the two countries should respect and take care of each other's major concerns, enhance pragmatic cooperation and increase mutual understanding between the two peoples in a bid to push forward bilateral ties in a long-term, healthy and stable manner.     The two governments, via the JICA, Japanese government's overseas aid agency, have conducted effective cooperation since the normalization of bilateral ties, said Li, calling for more exchanges of youth and scientists between the two countries.     Ogata visits China as guest of China's Ministry of Science and Technology

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Lu Zhengcao, the last one of New China's first 57 generals, was cremated here Tuesday. Lu died of illness on Oct. 13 at the age of 106. Chinese President Hu Jintao, former president Jiang Zemin, and other senior leaders including Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang attended the cremation ceremony, which was held Tuesday morning at the hall of the Beijing Babaoshan Cemetery.     In 1955, the People's Republic of China (PRC) first adopted the military ranks and 55 senior officers were granted generals. Two more joined them in 1956 and 1958 respectively.
