SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University is alerting students who may have been exposed to meningococcal meningitis.The university says they were notified that a current student has a “probable case of meningococcal meningitis.”The university said in a tweet that it is immediately hosting two clinics for those who attended specific events with the student. The events were the Delta Sigma Phi Formal, held Friday, April 12, from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Spark Encore Event Center; and the Delta Sigma Phi Social Event, which was held Saturday, April 13, from 9:30 p.m. to Midnight, at the organization’s chapter facility. Students who attended the events are urged to attend one of the two clinics that are being offered for free at SDSU. The most common symptoms of meningococcal meningitis are fever, headache and a stiff neck, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - SeaWorld San Diego is offering free admission to veterans and their family members starting Monday. The park admission is good for veterans and up to three guests. SeaWorld has a similar offer for active-duty service members.“My son is a military veteran who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. I’m not only proud of his service, but of all those who have worn the uniform of our country,” said Marilyn Hannes, SeaWorld San Diego’s park president. “We genuinely appreciate the sacrifices they’ve made to protect our freedom and are once again offering them free admission to the park. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s City Council voted Tuesday to expand the social host ordinance to include marijuana and controlled substances. Before the vote, the ordinance only addressed underage drinking, but not drugs. The amendment, which was approved unanimously, will now go before the council for a second reading before it becomes law. “As a mom, the safety of my children is my priority, and as City Attorney, I am committed to protecting every child,” City Attorney Mara W. Elliott said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Stopping aggressive behavior before it starts is one of the many goals for schools within the San Ysidro School District.The San Ysidro School District partnered up with the District Attorney’s office to teach staff members restorative practices in school. These practices help students deal with their emotions and understand their behaviors.Kids take a few minutes a day to express how they feel and address different topics like who they trust and why. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Statewide DUI arrests and fatalities saw a significant increase over Christmas weekend. A total of 47 people died in DUI-related crashes in 2018 compared to 27 deaths over the same time period in 2017. DUI arrests also saw a significant rise. More than 1,100 people were arrested for DUI in 2018 compared to 917 in 2017. In San Diego County, three people died due to DUI-related crashes, tying with 2017. DUI arrests rose slightly from 56 to 57 in 2018. The reporting period for the arrests and deaths was Friday, December 21 through Tuesday, December 25. 584
