SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County's economy is estimated to lose about .4 billion this year due to the pandemic.The new estimates according to SANDAG say the region saw about .8 billion in estimated wages in the first six months of the pandemic. About 176,000 workers were left unemployed because of COVID-19.Of those who lost their job, one in five female employees who lost their job worked in the education sector, and two in three workers ages 16 to 24 who list their jobs were in the tourism sector.About 50% of Hispanic workers who have lost their job worked in the tourism sector, as well. The tourism sector has been hit especially hard by pandemic-related closures, with many of San Diego's hotels and attractions closed much of the summer.But tourism is just one of the industries suffering during the pandemic. SANDAG says about 80% of job loss due to COVID-19 was either in the tourism, retail, or education industries.Ray Major, Chief Economist for SANDAG, said people from neighboring cities are still coming to the area for short trips, but the loss of large conventions and weddings is the aspect of tourism that has the most detrimental impact."You have people flying in from all over the world to go to conventions and they spend a lot of money here in the region at our local restaurants, at our local attractions and that has almost completely dried up," said Major.Major added that even when the economy does recover, conventions may never look the same."The technology is such that it has enabled these conventions to go virtual and they’re doing a pretty good job. So now you really have to question is a business going to undertake the expense of sending their people across the country," said Major.Before COVID-19, SANDAG estimated the region's economy to grow about 2% higher than 2019's Gross Regional Product. Now, the agency estimates the economy to contract about 4.7%, or .4 billion.SANDAG estimated that the economy may grow by about 4.2% in 2021, which could bring the economy back up to 2019 levels. Major said predictions are showing a slower complete recovery, adding it could take until 2023 or 2024 for a full economic recovery, assuming a vaccine is available around early 2021.Major also said some of the industries that aren't hurting as badly are innovation, government and construction. He said the focus moving forward should be on helping people in failing industries shift to jobs that are more successful."What we’re going to have to do is really find those and focus on re-training programs to help people change careers. It’s not that easy for people to switch from one industry to another," said Major. 2671

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego businessman Doug Manchester has suggestions about how to help the people of the Bahamas recover from Hurricane Dorian. “It's devastation. It's beyond all anything that anybody can imagine. The aerial pictures don't do it justice on how much devastation there really is,” Manchester told 10News Thursday. Manchester loaded his plane with supplies and went to work on the island nation with relief organizers. “When this happened, I wanted to go down there as a private citizen to see all I could do to help,” Manchester said. Rebuilding is going to be a long and expensive process but Manchester believes it will happen. “It's going to cost billions, so every little bit helps,” said Manchester. Manchester, who has a long history in the Bahamas, was nominated to be the ambassador by President Trump. The nomination has been on hold for more than a year. “It's political, but hopefully that will see itself through in the next couple months because I can do a lot more as an ambassador than I can as a private citizen." Manchester hopes San Diegans will be generous in their donations to the Bahamas whether it’s through his charitable foundation or another aid group. 1205

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ralphs grocery stores are extending their hours to help seniors and provide greater flexibility for the general public, according to Director of Corporate Affairs John Votava.All stores will open at 6 a.m. - 7:30 a.m. for shoppers 60 years and older. "They're the most vulnerable population out there today, so we want to make sure they have time to come into our stores and shop uninhibited," Votava said.Locations will remain open to the public until at least 10 p.m., some will stay open later.Ralphs is also offering free pharmacy delivery for most locations and free pickup service for most grocery orders. Families took advantage of the pickup service Sunday at the Ralphs in Mission Valley. "I think it's going to make people feel comfortable shopping in a different way. If you can order online or call it in for sure," Tim Earp said through a mask.Votava said they're working on other safety features to protect customers and their employees. Plexiglass will be installed next week at checkout counters, and decals are already on the floor to encourage social distancing at checkout.Votava also said employees are allowed to wear masks and gloves while they work.He does have one request for anyone in the store, "if you see a senior who is shopping throughout the day, please let them cut to the front of the line so they can get in and out of the store safely."Votava said this is the new normal for now, and the store hours will reflect that indefinitely. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans spend years saving up enough cash for a down payment on a home, but now the FBI says fraudsters are getting much better at stealing it.Hackers are getting into the emails of private real estate agents and escrow companies - duping would-be buyers into wiring their down payment cash to false accounts. They're also getting tipped off by celebratory Facebook photos about accepted offers, using clues like listing agent signs to get in touch with the buyers and pretend to be escrow companies - asking for payment. In all, the FBI says Americans lost nearly billion in real estate wire fraud in fiscal 2017, up 50 fold from fiscal 2016. San Diego special agent Chris Christopherson says the FBI can reverse wire transfers if contacted quickly after they happen. He said internationally they have a day or two, and domestic about a week. He said San Diegans can protect themselves by verifying payment information they get by email either in person or by phone with a trusted source. "Make sure you're not using a phone number you got from the email, be skeptical, verify it separately," he said. The FBI said another way to help protect yourself is to never to reply to emails that ask for financial information. Instead, forward them to the recipient you know, typing in their address. San Diego realtor Gary Kent was selling a duplex last year when hackers got the buyer to wire a ,000 down payment to a fraudulent account. They mimicked an email pretending to be from the escrow company."The buyer went down to the bank, said 'I need to wire the money,' and they said, this wasn't the same account number you did before," Kent said. Kent noted that the bank was able to reverse the transfer. 1804

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans will soon have four new restaurants for dining along the San Diego Bay, as Mayor Kevin Faulconer joined Port of San Diego officials and The Brigantine Inc. for the ribbon cutting ceremony Monday for Portside Pier. Portside Pier is an over-the-water dining complex that has been years in the making. It will have four restaurants -- Brigantine on the Bay, Miguel's Cocina, Ketch Grill & Taps and Portside Coffee & Gelato. The dining complex replaced Anthony's Fish Grotto, a staple for 52 years along the bay. The dining complex is now owned by The Brigantine Inc. The restaurants are opening amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The design of the restaurants have plenty of outdoor space to seat about 500 people, with all social distancing guidelines in place. The complex has capacity for about 1,000 people, once pandemic restrictions are lifted. Portside Pier is the first of several projects along the waterfront, to improve and update the embarcadero. The coffee and gelato bar are already open. The other restaurants officially open on July 28. 1090
