Every day, 20 veterans reportedly take their lives due to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Now, a party drug is proving to be a promising, yet controversial, alternative therapy to treat PTSD and depression.For 11 years, Patrick, a former airman, suffered from PTSD. He said he got to a point where he felt he tried everything.   "I stayed home all the time,” he says. “I didn't get out the depression, the anxiety and the thoughts of suicide, every day."   Patrick says he found a glimmer of hope three months ago, when Veterans Affair signed off on an alternative treatment called ketamine therapy. Doctors administer a very low dose of ketamine, popularly known as “Special K.”    "Basically, it's an infusion through an IV," Patrick explains.   Some users say it feels like you're experiencing an alternative reality, but it's the immediate results after treatment that has patients seeing life through a different lens.    "I feel like someone turned on the light in the dark room,” Patrick says. “That now, I can see. Now, I can really proceed with my day."  The opioid crisis has created a cause for concern for abuse of ketamine. However, Dr. Steven Levine, the CEO of Actify Neurotherapies where Patrick goes, says this treatment is different than prescription medication.    "Most importantly, if the medicine is restricted to a controlled medical setting and people don't have it at home just to take it whenever, they feel like it that makes all the difference," Dr. Levine says.  Ketamine therapy might not be for every veteran living with PTSD, but for Patrick, it gave him his life back."I’m just thankful this program is out there and that it works for me," he says.   1778

(KGTV)- School leaders in a north county school district are trying to figure out how to address a legal petition filed by their teachers' union.The San Dieguito Union High School District Board of Trustees held an emergency closed-door meeting Tuesday at Earl Warren Middle School in Solana Beach.A few dozen students and some parents gathered outside the school to protest the district's plan to return to in-person instruction in January."Our teachers have taught us to stand up for what's right, and we see that the board is not listening to their needs, their concerns, they're putting their lives at risk, so we are here to support our teachers," said student Andrea Gately.Parent Julie Bronstein said distance learning is not ideal, but she doesn't think it's safe for kids to return when the virus is surging."Why can't we just wait a bit more, get ourselves out of the danger zone, get beyond the surge, make sure teachers are able to be vaccinated to the extent possible, and then reopen in a grander fashion," said Bronstein.Late last Tuesday night, the San Dieguito Union High School District Board of Trustees voted to give students the option to return to school one day a week on January 4th, then five days a week for in-person instruction on January 27th.Parents like Jane Woltman say students should have returned to class months ago."When they asked if kids wanted to go back full time in October, 80% of those parents said yes, yet we didn't go back then. We weren't in the purple tier then," said Woltman.Woltman has two kids at La Costa Canyon High School."I just think the social well being of kids is diminishing. Kids are losing engagement, and basically, this is a teaching model that was not intended to be long term," said Woltman.Friday, the California Teachers Association filed a legal petition on behalf of the local teachers' union to block the January return.Duncan Brown is a counselor at Diegueno Middle School and Oak Crest Middle School. He's also the president of the San Dieguito Faculty Association. He says the district's plan violates the governor's regional stay at home order."It goes against CDC guidelines, it goes against CDPH rules, most districts have reconsidered reopening plans, but San Dieguito continues to move forward," said Brown.Under the state's health mandate, schools that were already open for in-person instruction were allowed to stay open when the county fell back into the purple tier. The union is challenging the district's definition of what is considered an open school."All the instruction is done through small cohorts, and we believe the intent of the reopening plan was if grades were going through a reopening. For example, 9th and 10th grade were invited back, then under those kinds of understandings, 11th and 12th graders would be able to continue the reopening as well," said Brown.Parents who believe kids should be back in school say the union is just delaying things."I just think it's a stall tactic, and the union doesn't want to go back period. I don't think that's the voice of a lot of teachers who are afraid of ramifications if they speak up," said Woltman.The board president says the district's reopening plan follows the guidance issued by The California Department of Public Health and includes detailed protocols for distancing and ventilation.Teachers in high-risk groups for the virus or with childcare issues can continue teaching remotely until January 27th, but the district hasn't decided beyond that. 3529

(KGTV) -- As San Diego County inches closer to finally being removed from the state’s watch list, it remains unknown what exactly that will mean for businesses that have been waiting to reopen indoor operations.“We have asked the state for guidance for what they think the policy will be, the process will be, for potentially reopening some of the entities that faced additional closures,” said County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.In the meantime, some cities across the county have been working with businesses to ensure they can still operate outside during the challenging time. Some of those businesses appear to be thriving.“More people are coming out to eat, and as you can see, we’re already almost full here,” said Mia Davis, the owner of Mikko Sushi in downtown Escondido.Davis and her sister-in-law, Minky Jeon, opened Mikko Sushi in February, but just one month later they were forced to shut down indoor dining due to the rising COVID-19 cases across the county.They moved to take out orders only, a struggle for the new business owners.“We were devastated actually because we were just finally starting to build our clientele,” said Davis.Then the City of Escondido stepped in to help businesses move outdoors quickly and easily, making all the difference for business owners like Davis.“The City of Escondido went out of their way to help us,” she said. “They really helped expedite the permit process, and I didn’t have to pay any fees.”Davis told ABC 10News, she was not only able to keep her original staff employed, but Mikko Sushi became so busy with outdoor dining, that she had to hire more employees.“Every Friday night we have a big waiting list,” she said. “I’m thankful that local customers really been supporting us, and I can’t complain.”A walk down Grand Avenue in Escondido reveals how locals have embraced the opportunity to dine outside. The sight is something that brings Amber Tarrac, the Deputy Director of Economic Development for the City of Escondido, much joy.“We’re really happy and proud to be able to support our businesses in that way,” said Tarrac. “The city really took strong, swift action and worked with very closely with our Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Business Association to allow for and facilitate the permit process to allow for our businesses to operate outside. We expanded that to salons, to restaurants and other retail as well.”During a time where there are many uncertainties for small business owners, Davis said the opportunity to try something new and succeed is rewarding.“I’m thankful that our business is doing well during this pandemic, and I’m thankful for what the city did,” said Davis.The City of Escondido recently launched a grant program to help small businesses. But this year, the pandemic is likely changing some of those celebrations.So, is it still possible to celebrate Halloween this year?"That's a great question. I'm not just a doctor, but I'm also a parent to three young boys who are of trick-or-treating age. So, it's certainly a question that gets asked a lot in my wife's pediatric practice, as well,” said Dr. Kenny Banh, an emergency room physician and assistant dean of undergraduate medical education at UCSF-Fresno. “I have to say, I don't want to give a blanket answer, because it really depends on where you are and what the numbers are."Dr. Banh says there are ways to trick-or-treat this Halloween, but you first have to look at your local city and county ordinances."There’s simple things of just maintaining the guidelines. How do you do a mask? There are ways to incorporate masks in a costume and make sure we make or get costumes with masks integrated into them and trying to maintain social distancing,” suggested Dr. Banh. “The good thing about candy is years ago we moved away from homemade candies. Almost all candy is packaged already, so that’s helpful.”Still, limiting the number of people who touch the candy is a good idea along with wiping down the packaging.If you're wanting to pass out candy this Halloween, it's best to do it with a mask on and try to limit the number of trick or treaters handling the candy."Some recommendations are prepackaged candy, give little candy gift bags people can grab as they get by, instead of having kids reach in with their hands and grabbing a bunch of stuff, or you passing out with gloves or getting tongs and just dropping them into or getting a scooper letting kids drop it in," said Dr. Banh.Dr. Banh's biggest concern is with Halloween parties."Having Halloween parties and getting kids from the neighbors or friends all together, that’s really different than you as a nuclear group going as a family going out trick-or-treating and doing it safely,” said Dr. Banh. “Trying to understand that we’re finally making some ground in many states and we can easily go backwards. Labor Day, Halloween all these things sort of letting our guard down on those aspects.”Doctors say it's important to stay vigilant when it comes to protecting yourself from coronavirus so that the only frightening things we're encountering this Halloween are scary costumes and decorations. 2530
