CAPE TOWN, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- More people voluntarily get HIV tests in the Western Cape province, an indication of people's rising awareness of the epidemic, authorities said on Thursday.Nearly 11,000 people in the province have been tested over the past 10 days as authorities stepped efforts to halve the number of HIV transmissions over the next few years, according to official figures.Authorities expect more people to be tested when the monthly campaign ends by the end of December.In December last year, 67,111 people were tested.This year's figure is expected to be higher than that of last year, said Western Cape Premier Helen Zille.The campaign, known as Know Your Status and Win, may become a regular feature in the province, said Zille.To encourage more people to take part in the campaign, the province offers awards to several winners by drawing, ranging from 10,000 rand (about 1,250 U. NEW YORK, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Tuesday that babies born in the city in 2009 have the record high life expectancy of 80.6 years, an increase of nearly three years since 2000.The rate of 80.6 years is also above the U.S. national rate of 78.2 years. Life expectancy for 40-year-olds in New York increased by 2.5 years (79.5 to 82) from 2000 to 2009, outpacing the national trend of 1.2 year-increase for the same age group in the U.S. as a whole."If you have friends and relatives that you deeply care about, and they live elsewhere, on average if they move to New York City, they will live longer," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg at Lincoln Hospital in Bronx.Bloomberg contributed the life expectancy progress to the city' s health interventions, including its anti-smoking campaign and expanded testing and treatment for the HIV virus.Despite the progress, heart disease, cancer and influenza/ pneumonia continue to rank as the top three leading causes of death in New York City, followed by lung disease and diabetes.

Logitech has no plans to help make that happen.Launched during the holiday shopping season last year, the Logitech Revue with Google TV system was criticized for being pricey and unpolished although it gives consumers a streamlined experience of traditional TV content and online media. BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's land supply went up 37 percent year-on-year in 2011 amid the government's tightening measure on commercial property market, according to the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) on Saturday. Most of the land supply last year went to the country's 10 million government-subsidized affordable housing units that began construction in 2011, according to MLR.In the meantime, land supply for commercial residential housing totaled about 96,700 hectares last year, up only 4 percent from previous year.Planned land supply quota for construction last year were up 16.25 percent year-on-year from 180,000 hectares in 2010.

BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's efforts to fight AIDS are impressive and its experience can be shared, according to Michel Sidibe, executive director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)."We have seen progress in terms of new infections. The number of people going into treatment is increasing and the mortality rate is going down very quickly in China," Sidibe said during an interview with Xinhua on Wednesday.Sidibe said he was impressed by the country's political leadership and commitment to controlling AIDS.According to UNAIDS, the country has reported a 60-percent reduction in deaths due to AIDS over the past eight years.New HIV infection cases in China have been reduced from 70,000 people annually in 2005 to around 48,000 in 2011, according to the country's health department."However, China's success will not only be measured by what it has done for the Chinese people," Sidibe said.China has successful experience in reducing new HIV infections among intravenous drug users, which can be shared with the rest of the world, particularly east Europe and south Asia where HIV infections among drug abusers is a major challenge, he said.Sidibe suggested that the country should work with the rest of the developing world, particularly Africa, in fighting AIDS.A partnership between China and Africa will make a "big, big difference" in reducing AIDS mortality rates and introducing new technology and perspectives in Africa, said the official who had worked for UN in several African countries for more than two decades.Admitting the challenges of funding AIDS control programs during the current global economic downturn, Sidibe called for global solidarity and increasing shared responsibilities among countries."It is a critical moment now. It is not a time to stop investment but to redouble our efforts, to make sure that we will continue to make progress in the fight against HIV," Sidibe said."Getting to Zero" has been chosen as the main theme of World AIDS Day for the next five years, referring to UNAIDS' vision of "zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths."Sidibe met with Li Congjun, president of the Xinhua News Agency, on Wednesday before the interview.
