BEREA, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns announced Wednesday that Myles Garrett has been reinstated by the NFL and will be rejoining the Browns for the 2020 season.Garrett's reinstatement will allow him to participate in offseason workouts slated to begin in early April.Garrett was suspended indefinitely on Nov. 15, the day after he ripped the helmet off Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph and hit him on the head with it. The incident came at the end of the Browns' 21-7 home victory over the Steelers, following a scrum on the ground during which Rudolph appeared to get a hand on Garrett's helmet and kick him in the groin.During his hearing to appeal of the suspension, Garrett alleged that Rudolph called him a racial slur. The NFL disputed the claim and said they found no such evidence of it."Mason vehemently denies the report of being accused of using a racial slur,” a Steelers spokesman told ESPN's Jake Trotter at the time.The NFL denied Garrett's appeal last November, upholding the indefinite suspension for the remainder of last season. It has left thousands of orphan children and adoptive families in limbo. Last summer, Robin and Walt Huston decided they wanted to share their lake house home with a child in need.“We just decided to add to our family,” said Robin Huston. “We think we have enough to give to another child.”The Hustons are pre-approved to adopt and have been working with an international agency that specializes in placing children with hearing loss or deafness.Walt Huston’s parents and grandparents were deaf. “My first language was sign language,” said Walt. “And then I met Robin. She knew sign and then we both decided we wanted a deaf child.”The child they selected is 13-year-old Zhou Ji. Born hearing impaired, he’s waited his entire life for someone to choose him. “[They] showed us some pictures of him and our hearts just melted,” said Walt. “And we wanted him from that point on.”But the eruption of the coronavirus has brought dozens of adoptions like theirs to a crushing halt. Zhou Ji is living in an orphanage under lockdown in Hubei province, the epicenter of the Wuhan virus outbreak. “Yes. It’s very scary,” said the Hustons.Pamela Neail Thomas is the china program director for Hand-in-Hand International Adoptions and is handling the Hustons’ case. “The children in the orphanages are being kept inside the compounds and their caregivers are being asked to stay with them,” said Thomas. “So, no one is leaving.” Along with being paralyzed by the outbreak, the Hustons are also racing against time. “He is 13. He's going to be 14 in October,” said Robin. “So, he will be aging out.”If that happens, there is very little if any recourse.“If he gets to his 14th birthday he become ineligible for adoption under Chinese law,” explained Thomas.The Indiana couple says they remain hopeful the virus will be contained before it’s too late. “I just hope that this virus has subsided enough that we're able to travel and stay healthy and that he stays healthy.” 2174
Boeing employees knew about problems with flight simulators for the now-grounded 737 Max and apparently tried to hide them from federal regulators, according to documents released Thursday.In internal messages, Boeing employees talked about misleading regulators about problems with the simulators. In one exchange, an employee told a colleague they wouldn’t let their family ride on a 737 Max.Boeing said the statements “raise questions about Boeing’s interactions with the FAA” in getting the simulators qualified. But said the company is confident that the machines work properly.“These communications do not reflect the company we are and need to be, and they are completely unacceptable,” Boeing said in a statement. Employees also groused about Boeing’s senior management, the company’s selection of low-cost suppliers, wasting money, and the Max.“This airplane is designed by clowns who in turn are supervised by monkeys,” one employee wrote.Names of the employees who wrote the emails and text messages were redacted.The Max has been grounded worldwide since March, after two crashes killed 346 people. The crash that month of an Ethiopian Airlines flight had been preceded in October 2018 by the crash of a brand-new Max operated by Indonesia’s Lion Air.Boeing is still working to update software and other systems on the Max to convince regulators to let it fly again. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., chairman of the House Transportation Committee.DeFazio said the documents detail “some of the earliest and most fundamental errors in the decisions that went into the fatally flawed aircraft.” DeFazio and other critics have accused the company of putting profit over safety.The grounding of the Max will cost the company billions in compensation to families of passengers killed in the crashes and airlines that canceled thousands of flights.
