Through years of development, the Internet has been closely connected with people, bringing both convenience and threats. The threats include Internet-based crimes and pornography.It is common practice for countries, including the United States, to take necessary measures to administer the Internet according to their own laws and regulations.The Internet is also restricted in the United States when it comes to information concerning terrorism, porn, racial discrimination and other threats to society.Shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the U.S. Congress approved the Patriot Act to grant its security agencies the right to search telephone and e-mail communications in the name of anti-terrorism. The move aroused a great deal of controversy far and wide.U.S. authorities have also taken measures, such as installing supervision software and imposing grave punishments, to curb Internet child porn, a serious crime in the country.The United States often gossips about other countries' policies on administering the Internet, but at the same time it takes similar measures to minimize the spread of illegal information. BEIJING, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao Friday called for the mainland and Taiwan to enhance mutual political trust and strengthen the political foundation for a peaceful relationship.The mainland and Taiwan should uphold the principle that the two sides belong to one and the same China, Wen said in the government work report at the annual session of the National People's Congress, the top legislature.Wen hailed the progress made in mainland-Taiwan relations during the past year, saying that continuous improvement has brought real benefits to the people.Ties across the Taiwan Strait have warmed up in recent years, with the realization of direct air and sea transport links and postal services.The two sides are also negotiating about an economic pact, the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), which aims at normalizing trade and investment links.Wen said in the report that a unique economic cooperation mechanism would be established through negotiating and signing the ECFA.In an online chat with Internet users on Saturday, Wen said the mainland is willing to make concessions when negotiating."The reason is very simple: Taiwan compatriots are our brothers," he said.

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The quality of China's agricultural produce including vegetables, domestic animals and aquatics was improved in 2009, the Ministry of Agriculture said Monday.The ministry released an annual report based on monitoring results of agricultural products, saying 96.4 percent of vegetables had met safety standards in 2009, up 0.1 percentage points year on year.The rate was 99.5 percent for domestic animals, up 0.8 percentage points, and 97.2 percent for aquatic products, up 1.5 percentage points.The monitoring of fruits, mushrooms and tea, for the first time in 2009, found 98 percent, 95.2 percent, and 94.8 percent of products in the three categories met standards.In 2009, the inspections became more detailed, covered more categories, and were carried out in 259 large and medium-sized cities, compared with only 36 major cities previously, the ministry said.The ministry said it would step up the control over the use of prohibited pesticides and veterinary drugs in 2010 in order to further improve the quality and safety of agricultural produce.
