BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao raised a five-point proposal Thursday to advance the Sino-Turkish friendly and cooperative relationship to a higher level.     Hu put forward the proposal on promoting the Sino-Turkish partnership on the basis of mutual respect, mutual trust, equality and mutual benefit as well as common development, when talking with visiting Turkish President Abdullah Gul at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. China was willing to work with Turkey to strengthen political ties, said Hu, adding that the two governments should strengthen communication and coordination and support each other on important issues concerning their core interests.     Their legislatures and parties should continue to conduct multi-level exchanges, so as to promote understanding and friendship. Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) shakes hands with visiting Turkish President Abdullah Gul during a welcoming ceremony for Gul at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, capital of China, on June 25, 2009.    According to Hu, the other four points include expanding bilateral trade and economic cooperation, boosting cooperation to combat the "three evil forces" of terrorism, separatism and extremism and cross-border crimes, intensifying exchanges and cooperation in the fields of culture, education, tourism, mass media and public health, and maintaining multilateral cooperation to promote world harmony.     China is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with Turkey on the Middle East issue and combating pirates in the waters off Somalia and the Gulf of Aden, said Hu, noting that China also hoped to support and cooperate with Turkey in sustainable development and jointly dealing with the global challenges.     Hailing the long history of friendship between the Chinese and Turkish peoples, Hu said bilateral relations had made considerable achievements since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1971.     Hu said recent years had witnessed frequent high-level exchanges, increased mutual political trust, continuously enhanced cooperation and close coordination and collaboration in international and multilateral affairs.     China appreciated Turkey's adherence to the one-China policy and its support to China on the issues of Taiwan and Tibet, the president noted.     Gul said Turkey attached great importance to Turkish-Sino relations and spoke highly of China's achievements in its social and economic development and the significant role China played in international affairs.     Turkey was willing to strengthen political relations with China and boost cooperation related to finance, tourism, culture, infrastructure construction and science and technology, said Gul.     There was great promise for bilateral economic and trade cooperation, said Gul, stressing that Turkey seeks to further strengthen trade exchanges with China and expects more Chinese enterprises to make investments there.     Sino-Turkish trade was 12.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2008, up 6.8 percent year on year, and 8.6 billion U.S. dollars in China's favor, according to the Ministry of Commerce.     Gul also reiterated Turkey's adherence to the one-China policy and expressed the hope that it could enhance coordination with China in the United Nations and other multilateral organizations and cement cooperation in combating terrorism.     After the meeting, the two leaders witnessed the signing of seven bilateral documents on cooperation in foreign affairs, energy, cultural heritage, mass media and trade finance.     Gul arrived here on Wednesday, kicking off a six-day state visit to China as Hu's guest.

BEIJING, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao attended Friday the cremation ceremony of renowned philosopher, religion scholar and historian Ren Jiyu, who died on July 11 at the age of 93.     Ren was born in 1916 in Pingyuan County in east China's Shandong province. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in1956.     "Ren conducted research and education in the fields of Chinese philosophy and religion for a long time. He has made significant contributions to the country's cultural industry by compiling historical materials," said a statement issued by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee. SHANGHAI, June 19 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese leader has urged a severe crackdown on pornographic Internet content, stressing that there should be no slackening of efforts to punish the "vulgar trend" in the cyberworld.     Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks during a five-day tour of the nation's biggest city, Shanghai, that ended Friday.     He said the construction of "green" website-surfing venues should be stepped up to offer minors a healthy social and cultural environment.     While visiting the construction site of the Shanghai World Expo2010, Li said the expo should be a showcase of the nation's cultural prosperity.     The expo would be another grand international festivity after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Li said, noting that domestic and foreign journalists should be provided with favorable conditions in covering the event.     The official also stressed the importance of technical innovation and cultural reform while visiting local manufacturing companies and artistic troupes.

BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government's fiscal revenue in the first five months of 2009 reached 2.7 trillion yuan (400 billion U.S. dollars), down 6.7 percent from the same period of last year, Finance Minister Xie Xuren said Wednesday.     Xie revealed the figure in a report to the ninth session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature.     Of the total, the central government collected about 1.4 trillion yuan, down 14 percent. This accounted for 39.6 percent of the annual budget.     Local governments collected the other 1.3 trillion yuan, up 2.9 percent, which accounted for 42.4 percent of the annual budget.     Xie cited four factors for the drop in fiscal revenues: a fall in international trade due to the global economic downturn; a fall in revenue value relative to the consumer price index and producer price index; structural tax reduction polices and a slowdown in China's economic growth.     Structural tax reduction policies reduced taxes by about 230 billion yuan in the first five months, according to the report.     He said in the first five months, fiscal expenditure nationwide amounted to almost 2.25 trillion yuan, up 27.8 percent over the same period last year, accounting for 29.5 percent of the budgeted figure.     Central government expenditure totaled 459.3 billion yuan, up 21.4 percent, while local governments spent 1.79 trillion yuan, up29.5 percent, he said.     The funding went mainly to expanding public investment, increasing subsidies for low-income groups, ensuring sufficient money for education, health, social security, employment, basic housing and culture, and supporting technological innovation, energy conservation and emission reduction.     Xie stressed that the government would continue to ensure the stable growth of investment and actively implement structural tax reduction policies to ease the burden on business and consumers. Doing so would encourage companies to invest and individuals to consume.     "Efforts should be made to boost revenues and cut spending," he said, calling for frugality and strict control of expenditures by reducing government vehicle purchases, reception fees and official travel.     He said: "The construction of government and Party committee buildings should be rigidly limited."     The government would promote the scientific and meticulous management of public finances, boost efficiency and deepen fiscal system reform, he said, adding that resource tax reform would be advanced and the consumption tax system would be adjusted.     Xie said the outstanding national debt reached 5.3 trillion yuan at the end of last year, which was within the 5.5-trillion-yuan limit in the annual budget.     The government's fiscal revenue reached about 6.13 trillion yuan last year, 19.5 percent more than in 2007.     Xie said the central fund for reconstruction from last year's May 12 earthquake reached 74 billion yuan and expenditures were 69.77 billion yuan last year.     This year, the central budget allocated 130 billion yuan for reconstruction work.
