(KGTV) - Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas outlined the city’s recent accomplishments and layed out its future goals in her fourth State of the City Address Tuesday night. Salas went over the growth and achievements San Diego County's second-largest city has seen over the last year, including neighborhood revitalization and the approval of the Bayfront Project. During the address, Salas spoke about events that drew large crowds over the last year.Salas said the city’s Fourth of July celebration in 2017 drew a crowd of 15,000 while more than 35,000 people attended HarborFest on the Bayfront.RELATED: Port of San Diego, Chula Vista moves forward with bayfront developmentThe Mayor also spoke about growth happening in Third Avenue Village citing the Lemon Fest, Taste of Third and Village Summer Nights in June. A popular topic throughout California in recent years is infrastructure. Salas said the Chula Vista has launched a million street paving project to repair streets.More than 300 residential streets are being rebuilt as part of the project.The Mayor also spoke about a half cent sales tax increase that will be added to the June ballot saying the tax increase “is a small price to pay to ensure the safety of our families.”In the final moments of her address, Salas spoke about the Bayfront Development she says will bring 2,000 construction jobs and 5,000 permanent jobs to the city.What is the most important issue to you? (KGTV) — California Governor Gavin Newsom posted to Twitter Saturday warning residents to "know their rights" over the threat of planned Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids Sunday.In the video, Gov. Newsom said to, "know your rights, learn more about your rights, legal protection, know that you should continue to camp, summer school, know that you should feel confident going to work, we have your back."The governor continued on to say that anyone fearing the planned Sunday raids does not have to open their door without a signed warrant, has the right to a lawyer, and has the right to remain silent if contacted by ICE. 639

(CNN) -- It may seem like an ordinary scene: Children and adults playing on pink seesaws, carelessly laughing and chatting with each other.But this is a playground unlike any other. These custom-built seesaws have been placed on both sides of a slatted steel border fence that separates the United States and Mexico.The idea for a "Teeter-Totter Wall" came from Ronald Rael, an architecture professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and Virginia San Fratello, an associate professor of design at San Jose State University -- and it was a long time coming.In 2009, the two designed a concept for a binational seesaw at the border for a book, "Borderwall as Architecture," which uses "humor and inventiveness to address the futility of building barriers," UC-Berkeley said.Ten years later, their conceptual drawings became reality. Rael and his crew transported the seesaws to Sunland Park, New Mexico, separated by a steel fence from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.People from both sides came together Monday to play in a "unifying act," the University of California said in a statement. Participants on the Mexico side had no planning, it said.In an Instagram post, Rael said the event was "filled with joy, excitement, and togetherness at the borderwall.""The wall became a literal fulcrum for U.S -Mexico relations and children and adults were connected in meaningful ways on both sides with the recognition that the actions that take place on one side have a direct consequence on the other side," he wrote.Rael says that counterproposals for the wall created by his studio "reimagine, hyperbolize, or question the wall and its construction, cost, performance and meaning," according to the book's website. 1719

(KGTV) -- A suspect in the freeway shooting death of a San Diego man was arrested following a standoff at a San Diego hotel, California Highway Patrol officials announced Monday.Vincent Dulay Deguzman Jr. faces charges in connection with the June 7 death of 47-year-old San Diego resident Jessie Garcia Sr., CHP officials said.According to the CHP, on June 7, Deguzman and Garcia were in a Kia Altima on southbound Interstate 5 in Irvine when Deguzman, who was behind the wheel, allegedly shot Garcia and then abandoned the rental car south of Culver Drive, where it was found on the shoulder with the body next to the vehicle at around 7:33 a.m.On June 11, CHP investigators identified Deguzman as the suspect in the case and obtained a warrant for his arrest.Investigators collaborated with the San Diego Fugitive Task Force and tracked Deguzman to a Hilton Garden Inn in San Diego.CHP officials said, “Deguzman barricaded himself inside a hotel room and a stand-of ensued.”Deguzman eventually surrendered without incident and was taken into custody.Deguzman was booked into Orange County Jail on suspicion of murder and being held without bail.CHP officials did not release any information on a possible motive in the case. 1234
