SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This year, the Drug Enforcement Administration is adding vaping products to the list of what they’ll accept on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The agency will be accepting prescriptions and vaping products on October 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. According to the agency, nearly 10 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs in 2018. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that there have been 33 deaths in 24 states and nearly 1,500 lung injuries from vaping in 2019.The agency is treating the events like an outbreak, saying the best advice is to avoid using all forms of E-Cigarettes. The DEA decided to add vaping products to their drug take back event to make sure they're safely removed."If people throw them away, if people dump them down the toilet, if people store them in a drawer, they're still not safe," says DEA Special Agent in Charge Colin Roane." "We're going to permanently get rid of them by collecting them and disposing them."The DEA will accept any kind of cartridges or vaping devices, as long as they don't have lithium-ion powered batteries.Check out the list below of locations you can drop off prescription drugs and vaping products throughout San Diego County: Naval Medical Center San Diego (Balboa) - Active and retired military and staff onlySan Diego Police Department Central Division Naval Base San Diego Navy Exchange on 32nd Street - Active and retired military and staff onlySan Diego District Attorney’s Office - Hall of JusticeCoronado Police DepartmentSan Diego Police Department Southeastern DivisionMarine Corps Recruit DepotSan Diego Sheriff’s Department Lemon Grove station San Diego Police Department Western Division San Diego Probation Juvenile HallSan Diego Police Department Eastern Division Mesa College Campus Police Substation La Mesa Police DepartmentSan Diego Sheriff’s Department Imperial Beach stationChula Vista Public Works CenterEl Cajon Police DepartmentKaiser Permanente Otay Mesa Pharmacy MCAS Miramar Exchange - Active and retired military and staff onlySan Diego Police Department Northern Division Lakeside Sheriff’s Department Sheriff’s Poway Patrol Station San Diego Police Department Northwestern Division Alpine Sheriff’s Station Scripps Encinitas Hospital Escondido Police Station San Diego Sheriff’s Office San MarcosCarlsbad Police Station San Diego Sheriff’s Office VistaTri-City Medical Center Sheriff’s Fallbroo Patrol Station MCB Camp Pendleton - Active and retired military and staff onlyClick here for more locations. 2559

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Clerk is preparing for its busiest wedding day of the year this Valentine’s Day. The office of the county clerk put out a statement Wednesday urging couples wishing to tie the knot to make an appointment. “We are excited to offer walk-in services at our historic downtown office on the waterfront for Valentine’s Day and don’t want couples to miss their chance at Valentine’s Day wedding,” said County Clerk Ernie Dronenburg. RELATED: Best places to propose in San Diego CountyThe downtown office located on the 1600 block of Pacific Highway will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Board of Supervisors Wednesday voted 4-1 in favor of Otay Ranch Resort Village 13, a mixed-use community to be developed near the city of Chula Vista. When completed, Otay Ranch Resort Village will feature 1,938 homes, a fire station, sheriff's station, trails, an elementary school, parks and open space, according to a county staff presentation."We must have more housing that is well-planned, that is walkable, bikeable, and smart net zero housing such as this proposal," said nearby resident Richard Richardson.Proposed by developers Baldwin & Sons and Moller Otay Lakes Investments, Otay Ranch Village is located less than a mile east of the city of Chula Vista and 12 miles southwest of the community of Jamul. The county Planning Commission voted 4-2 in favor of approval, and the county Planning & Development Services department also recommended approval.Several environmental groups urged the board to table the project until the county resolves issues over its Climate Action Plan, along with species protection concerns and wildfire hazards."The amount of greenhouse gas here is substantial," said Dr. Peter Andersen, a Jamul resident and member of the Sierra Club. Board Chairman Greg Cox said the project has "gone above and beyond" to address greenhouse gas emissions.Cox said the county is facing a housing shortage emergency, and Otay Ranch Resort Village is "one that's better designed than most I've seen" in terms of fire safety. "I believe this is a good project that checks all the boxes," he added.Although he praised the overall project, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher cast the lone no vote."My reluctance today is that we're very close to resolving a series of lawsuits and there's an effort to get a legally enforceable climate action plan, and then we can assess this project," he said. The county's plan has been the subject of several legal challenges. In June, a three-judge panel of the 4th District Court of Appeal in San Diego also found that reliance on carbon offsets was not legal, and shouldn't be used as a mechanism to allow general plan amendments to move forward.Fletcher said that while the Otay Village project is consistent with the density requirements in the county General Plan, his concerns over the use of carbon offsets prevented him from voting yes on Wednesday.Supervisor Jim Desmond said that despite problems with the Climate Action Plan, the county shouldn't have to stop all development. The board vice chairman also said that Otay Ranch Resort Village 13 complies with the county's Multiple Species Conservation Program, and received the blessing of San Diego County Fire Chief Tony Mecham. "This project of all the projects [brought] before this board is probably the safest from a fire safety standpoint," he said. "This is fantastic; it's showing real progress and real effort," Desmond added. 2902

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of Qualcomm employees went to work Tuesday no longer facing the threat of Broadcom's hostile takeover. President Trump blocked the 7 billion bid from Singapore-based Broacom on Monday, citing national security concerns. But Qualcomm is still facing several uncertainties.RELATED: Trump blocks Broadcom's bid to take over QualcommThe San Diego-based tech giant last week saw its executive chairman, Paul Jacobs, step down; it is still in a legal battle with Apple, and has faced international fines due to alleged anti-competitive practices. The Broadcom bid will free up Qualcomm to improve its own performance."It's one less hurlde because there's enough stuff the company has to deal with instead of worrying who is at the back of us," said Nikhil Varaiya, a finance professor at San Diego State University. RELATED: Qualcomm delays shareholder vote on Broadcom takeover for national security reviewOne Qualcomm worker, who declined to give his name, said employees were breathing a sigh of relief.San Diego's economic officials are as well. The San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation recently reported that the company has a .9 billion annual economic impact, equivalent to 35 Comic-Cons.Nikia Clarke, the organization's vice president, said Qualcomm also plays a role in recruiting tech companies and talented workers to San Diego.RELATED: Paul Jacobs leaves Qualcomm's executive management"Qualcomm has so long been an anchor of that innovation economy, and as our largest employer, of course, everyone int he region and certainly all of us in the office were watching very closely," Clarke said. Varaiya said he expects Qualcomm to focus on developing its 5-G technology, and its acquisition of NXP Semiconductors, to boost its performance. 1856
