They like prohibition ending,” said Brendan Johnson, a former U.S. Attorney for the district of South Dakota.In South Dakota, the vote to legalize marijuana on Nov. 3 passed with 54.2 percent approval, while 62 percent voted to re-elect Donald Trump as president; a once-partisan discrepancy that could also be seen in Montana, where 56.9 percent of the electorate voted for Trump and 57.8 voted for legalization.“Part of our state’s libertarian streak, which leads people to believe that the government doesn’t have a role to play in this, and, frankly, prohibition carried the day along with economic costs of building larger and larger prisons across the state,” said Johnson.According to Johnson, 10 percent of South Dakota’s arrests last year were for marijuana possession, oftentimes only a few grams. He says it is a number that is seen in states countrywide and one that has swayed Republicans to vote for a bill that they once may have not.In 1992, only about 25 percent of the party supported legalization nationwide, where today, that number stands at 53 percent, according to the Justice Collaborative Institute.“It became very hard to point towards legalization and say there was anything that was moving the topline numbers,” said Andrew Freedman, a vice president for Forbes-Tate, a bipartisan public advocacy firm.Freedman helped implement Colorado’s marijuana laws when the state became the first to legalize recreational marijuana in 2014. He says it became a case study for others who thought the drug would lead to more arrests, youth use, and crime-- all things that never transpired, according to the Crime and Justice Research Alliance.“There are a lot of Republicans who believe in less government and who think that the war on drugs was a failure and would themselves, be for legalization,” said Freedman. “There were a lot of unanswered questions, and now more and more questions are getting answered so there are fewer and fewer reasons to say no.”In six years, 15 states have voted to legalize recreational pot while 35 have legalized medical use. 2485

(KGTV) -- A family dog missing after a deadly crash in Pauma Valley Friday was reunited with its family after being located by firefighters Sunday.Cal fire said firefighters and the San Diego County Department of Animal Services returned to the scene after the crash in an effort to locate the dog.“After lots of hiking through thick brush, the mission was a success and the family was reunited with their pet,” Cal Fire said.“We're with our community members on some of their worst days...and we'll always be there, doing everything we can help make things better,” the agency continued.The crash happened early Friday morning, killing a mother and injuring her 11-year-old son and his father.Crews responded to the scene of the crash after the vehicle was found overturned on an embankment near State Route 76 between Palomar Mountain and Oceanside.The man and child are expected to recover. 914

Police were called to the Washington, D.C. home of Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Wednesday night when a group of protesters showed up and shouted threats.Smash Racism D.C., which calls itself "anti-fascist," claimed responsibility for the protest on social media. The left-wing group has previously targeted Ted Cruz, Kirstjen Nielsen, and other right-wing figures.In videos uploaded to Twitter by the group on Wednesday, participants were heard saying "Tucker Carlson, we will fight! We know where you sleep at night!" They called him a "racist scumbag" and hurled epithets.The Twitter account also shared Carlson's address, which is a violation of Twitter's rules. By late Wednesday night, Twitter had suspended the group, which means the tweets and videos are now deleted.Carlson told the Washington Post, "It wasn't a protest. It was a threat." He said "they were threatening me and my family and telling me to leave my own neighborhood in the city that I grew up in."Carlson was at his Fox News office across town, preparing for his 8 p.m. talk show, when the disturbance occurred. OXON HILL, Md. -- For sisters Nikki Howard and Jaqi Wright, life comes down to a handful of ingredients.”Love, peace and cheesecake,” Wright said.It’s cheesecake that started them off on a new journey, while the two were furloughed during the federal government shutdown two years ago.“We went through the holidays just praying that it would let up,” Wright said. “And it didn't.”“So, for New Year's Eve service, I made sweet potato cheesecakes,” Howard said.Wright continued, “She gave them to me put it in the fridge. I had no idea, until I asked, ‘Who made those?’ And she said, ‘me.’”Howard said her mother and Wright began eating some of it, before her mom declared, “she said, ‘it's so good you can sell it,’ and light bulbs went off.”That is how their small business, called “The Furlough Cheesecake,” came to be. At first, they started by simply selling them online, but it quickly snowballed from there, right into area Walmart stores.“I had no idea that that one cheesecake would change everything,” Wright said.Now, they’re going a step further. At National Harbor near Washington, D.C. they just opened their first physical storefront.“So, we started our business during a furlough and we opened a store during a pandemic,” Wright said. “It makes us sound crazy, honestly, but it just happened this way.”They are fortunate. The pandemic is hitting many small businesses hard and Black-owned businesses especially so. According to data from the U.S. Census, compiled by economists at the University of California - Santa Cruz, between February and April, the number of African-American owned businesses dropped by 41%.
