BELGRADE, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Wednesday met with Serbian President Boris Tadic, vowing to add new impetus to the traditional friendship between China and Serbia."I am here to help realize the consensus between the two heads of states, pushing forward our strategic partnership and traditional friendship," said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), who arrived here on Wednesday afternoon for a three-day visit.Wu is the first NPC Standing Committee chairman to visit Serbia over the past decade. China and Serbia have kept long-time friendship, and shared mutual support and respect. CHANGCHUN, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Floods have left 63 people dead and 59 missing in northeast China's Jilin Province over the past two months, local authorities said Monday.More than 4 million people have been affected since the flood season began in June and some 700,000 people have been evacuated, the Jilin Provincial Civil Affairs Department said in a statement.Additionally, about 62,000 houses have collapsed and 193,000 others have been damaged, along with 1.16 million hectares of cropland having been inundated, the statement said.Direct economic losses were estimated at almost 19 billion yuan (2.8 billion U.S. dollars), it added.In the hardest-hit areas, flash floods have cut roads, isolated villages and disrupted communications and water supplies.In the industrial city of Tonghua, torrential rains have damaged water pipelines, leaving 300,000 people without tap water for two days.Residents have largely relied on bottled water over the past 48 hours as authorities ordered 25 fire trucks to deliver water for domestic purposes aside from drinking to residential communities from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. everyday.About 1,700 tons of water had been delivered by truck, officials said.

JINAN, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- China concludes a five-day air defense exercise on Saturday with a live-fire drill and precision attacks on air targets by ground-to-air missiles.The live-fire drill, in Shandong Province, was part of the exercise code-named "Vanguard-2010," which began Tuesday in seven cities across Henan and Shandong provinces, involving more than 12,000 personnel.Seven types of ground-to-air weaponry, including a new type of ground-to-air missile and another state-of-the-art anti-aircraft gun, were used in intercepting and concentrating fire on air targets.Nearly 200 military aircraft, including drones, reconnaissance aircraft, fighter jets and helicopters, were involved in the five-day military drill, said Feng Zhaoju, deputy commander of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Jinan Military Command.The annual drill, consisting of two phases, focused on an emergency evacuation, strategy, reconnaissance, early warning, ground-to-air attacks and evacuation of command posts during the first phase which ended Thursday.Its second phase included testing of air defense abilities in a "complicated electromagnetic environment."A "Vanguard-2009A" exercise last year involved 5,000 troops from the army and air force."Vanguard-2008" included a 2,200-strong armored brigade from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Jinan Military Area Command.
