SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake along Mexico’s southern coastline Tuesday was felt hundreds of miles away.Thousands of people ran into the streets as buildings swayed back and forth. A hospital in Mexico City was evacuated; patients were sent to wait outside until they were given the all-clear.According to Mexico’s civil protection agency, four people were confirmed dead.The earthquake was centered just east of the popular tourist destination Huatulco, Oaxaca. According to Mexican officials, the damage was not widespread.“Right now, we’re working together with the Mexican Army, the Mexican Marines, and the National Guard,” said Ricardo Gamez, personal secretary to the mayor of Huatulco.“The Mayor, Giovanne González García, has visited hospitals, checking buildings, homes,” he said. “We have a lot of damage. We are doing evaluations of the houses and the buildings.”Gamez said shelters were set up for anyone in need.In San Diego County, Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina was left with concerns as he has close ties to the coastal town.“There’s a strong Oaxacan community in southern California, especially San Diego,” said Dedina. “Most hardcore surfers in San Diego know that coast really well.”Outside of his duties as mayor, Dedina runs Wildcoast, an international team that conserves coastal marine ecosystems and wildlife, including sea turtles in Mexico.“We have an office in Huatulco, our office received some damage I talked to our staff member there who was shaken up and in the office when the earthquake happened,” he said. “Talked to our interns, we have two paid interns that come from an indigenous community where they work to protect sea turtles; they were on the road near the epicenter when it happened.”Dedina said all three people were not injured.“It’s really a remarkable place in Mexico and probably some of the warmest, friendliest people on the planet,” he said. “Very shocked when we heard this happened and wishing our best to all our friends in Oaxaca.” 2024

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was killed after crashing into a parked truck on Interstate 5 in East Village near Petco Park Monday afternoon. The crash happened shortly after 1 p.m. on southbound Interstate 5 at Imperial Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol. CHP says the 21-year-old victim from Calexico was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed when he crashed his 2015 Nissan sedan into a parked cargo truck. CHP says the victim, who hasn't yet been identified, died at the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A handful of minor city code violations have forced the Hillcrest Farmers Market to make changes to their layout, resulting in a handful of vendors losing their spot.Market officials tell 10News they didn't get any officials citations or warnings, but they heard from police and the fire marshal in the past few weeks about the problems, and have worked with the city to address all of them.One, in particular, has led to the most disruption. Fire officials told the market they needed to keep a 20-foot buffer between the booths and the median on Normal Street, to allow enough room for a fire truck to drive through. To accommodate that, the market had to remove about 30 of its 200 vendor spots. Some of the booths were put in the north parking lot of the DMV, but 13 vendors still haven't returned to the market.Also, market officials say they had gotten complaints from local churches and business about parking and people crossing the street without using crosswalks near the vendor parking lot. To change that, they've hired a parking attendant to oversee the lot. The attendant also directs non-vendors to the free parking areas at nearby schools."All these changes have made things better," says Market Manager Mark Larson. He says it's been an adjustment, but the feedback has been great from both customers and vendors."Sales are up," Larson says while pointing out that the extra walking room has made it easier for families and people with strollers to navigate the market.The market also plans to expand onto Harvey Milk Street to make room for the vendors who lost their spot. They're also looking into adding a concert stage for live music. To do that, they need to re-submit their permit to the city. That could take a few months, but they're hopeful it will make the market better in the long run. 1852

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man carjacked two vehicles within hours in Otay Mesa, San Diego Police said Friday.The first carjacking happened in the parking lot of the Iris Trolley Station on Iris Ave. about 10:30 p.m. Thursday.A man was outside of his Volkswagen Jetta and a woman was sitting in the car when the suspect got into the driver’s seat, police said.The woman got out of the car and the suspect drove away, according to San Diego Police.Officers searched the area and found the suspect had parked the Jetta at Palm Ave. and Beyer Way and carjacked another car.Two men who were sitting in a Hyundai Genesis when the suspect grabbed the driver and pulled him out of the car. The passenger got out and the suspect drove away in the Genesis, officers said.The suspect crashed into a white SUV at I-805 and Sweetwater, police said.Paramedics took the driver, 33-year-old Daniel Perez, to the hospital with a knee injury. 927
