BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- One of China's two leading State-owned shipbuilders, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), said Sunday that its profit in 2009 jumped 18.5 percent to 7.39 billion yuan (1.1 billion U.S. dollars).The Beijing-based conglomerate, which consists nearly 50 industrial subsidiaries and about 30 R&D institutes in northern China, also said its operating income rose 17 percent in 2009 to 120.9 billion yuan.General manager Li Changyin said the CSIC had overcome the impact of the global financial crisis, which crippled the global sea-based trade and brought down ship orders.Li said technological innovations had enabled the CSIC to build 180,000-dwt bulkers, 320,000-dwt oil tankers, 13,000-TEU containers as well as new types of drilling platform which can be used in water depths up to 400 feet (120 meters).According to Li, CSIC had also been actively engaged in non-ship businesses including manufacturing of wind power and nuclear power equipment, accounting for 40 percent of the CSIC's business volume.Li said the CSIC profit target for 2010 was 8 billion yuan. The operating income was expected to surpass 140 billion yuan and the CSIC output in 2010 was likely to break 10 million dwt (deadweight tonnage), he added.The CSIC, which has more than 140,000 manpower, launched an initial public share offer at the Shanghai Stock Exchange in December 2009 and raised some 6.4 billion yuan.The CSIC's main shipbuilding and industrial enterprises are based in cities of Dalian, Qingdao, Tianjin, Shanhaiguan and Wuchang.The other major shipbuilding conglomerate in China -- the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) is based in Shanghai, whose turf is mainly in eastern and southern China.

BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's operational high-speed railways have exceeded 3,300 kilometers, leading the world in both length and technologies, the Ministry of Railways said on its official website Thursday.Last year China finished two high-speed railways between Wuhan-Guangzhou and Zhengzhou-Xi'an, with an operating speed of 350 km/h. Before that, China had built high-speed railways between some of its major cities, including Beijing-Tianjin, Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan, Qingdao-Jinan, Hefei-Wuhan and Hefei-Nanjing.A number of new high-speed railways are being built and will be finished in the coming few years, of which the Beijing-Shanghai line has a length of 1,318 km and a designed travel speed of 350 km/h. Construction of the line started in April 2008 and would finish in around five years. TAIYUAN, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Tens of thousands of people in north China's Shanxi Province flooded onto the streets Saturday afternoon and stayed until Sunday morning after earthquake rumors spread in the coal-rich region recently hit by a 4.8-magnitude quake.Major streets, parks and squares in cities like Jinzhong, Luliang, Changzhi, Yangquan and Taiyuan filled with anxious people and private cars. In rural areas, many villagers went out in the open air with their personal property, such as TVs.The Shanxi Provincial Seismological Bureau issued an urgent statement Sunday morning, asking residents to keep calm and not to believe in the quake rumor."According to the quake forecast regulation, only the provincial government can release quake forecast information. Other organizations and individuals are not authorized to do so," the statement said.The bureau is using TV, radio, Internet and text messages to clarify the situation and calm the residents.Meanwhile, local police are investigating the incident and trying to find out the source of the rumor.On Jan. 24, a 4.8-magnitude quake struck Yuncheng City in Shanxi.

BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Supervision said Thursday it would enhance supervision to key sectors and leading officials this year to ensure clean and efficient work in promoting the country's sound economic and social development.The supervision and examination would target corruption in project construction, real estate development and land management, as well as corruption behind major accidents, the ministry said in a circular outlining major works in 2010.The ministry would investigate officials who meddled in construction projects against relevant regulations to seek personal gains, staff of supervisory organs who were negligent of duty or took bribes, and those who involved in serious commercial bribery cases, the circular said.The ministry vowed "zero tolerance" for these cases, it said.The ministry promised to step up its efforts this year to ensure the implementation of the central government's major arrangements for accelerating the adjustment of economic growth mode and promoting steady and fast economic development.It would also strengthen supervision and examination to make sure local governments will take measures to check the rocketing real estate price in some cities to ensure the sector's healthy development, it said."Lazy and incapable" officials would also be targeted in the supervision to ensure efficiency of government work, according to the circular.China has intensified its fight against corruption recently.In its latest effort, the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Tuesday listed 52 unacceptable practices in an ethics code for CPC cadres to follow.The code forbids conducts including accepting cash or financial instruments as gifts, and using their influence to benefit their spouses or children with regards to their employment, stock trading or business.
