KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri Gov. Mike Parson announced changes Thursday in guidance for how teachers, staff and students will be classified in possible exposures to a COVID-19 case.During his weekly remarks, Parson acknowledged the recent spike in cases in the state has placed strain on schools, and after working with officials at the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Missouri Department of Health and Services, released guidance that clears the way for those in close contact to a COVID-19 case can continue to report to school.The new guidance for schools states that, in schools with mask mandates, appropriately wearing a mask can now prevent individuals from being identified as a close contact and those individuals can continue going to school if they do not show symptoms of COVID-19.The governor cited low transmission seen in schools across the state when proper COVID-19 protocols are in place and advice from a leading pediatric infectious disease researcher at Washington University and St. Louis Children's Hospital, Dr. Rachel Orscheln.Orscheln said that social distancing, cohorting, hand sanitation practices and mask-wearing are helping prevent transmission of COVID-19 in schools and that the experts will continue to monitor and adapt advice.Dr. Margie Vandeven, the state education commissioner, said that the amount of students and staff having to quarantine because of being considered in close contact with COVID-19 is causing staffing issues in schools. She also said that the quarantines were causing students to miss opportunities for social and emotional growth in the classroom.Vandeven said that nearby states like Iowa and Nebraska have put similar practices in place and have not seen increased transmission of the virus in schools.Parson added that when students have to stay home in quarantine, it prevents parents from going to work and that he hopes the change will help healthcare workers who are already experiencing strained staffing across the state.“We know that COVID-19 is not going away soon, so it is important that we continue to evaluate the guidance we’re issuing at the state level to make sure our procedures are sustainable for the next several months,” Parson said in a release announcing the new guidelines. “We have been working hard with DESE and DHSS to find a solution that allows us to continue providing the high-quality education our students deserve while still keeping them, our teachers, and all school staff members safe.”This story was originally published by Katelyn Brown on KSHB in Kansas City, Missouri. 2616

Matt Bevin on April 26 signed House Bill 528, which makes Kentucky the first state in the country to establish a blanket presumption "that joint custody and equally shared parenting time is in the best interest of the child" in every divorce case."This should lead to less fighting between parents because we're not pitting parents against parents anymore in a winner-take-all situation," National Parents Organization Kentucky chairman Matt Hale said. "We think that'll lead to less parenting conflict and better outcomes for children."The law includes provisions to disqualify unfit parents based on histories of domestic violence or significant mental health problems as well as physical distance that would make co-parenting impractical.In general, Hale said, the new law will ensure children don't automatically "lose" a parent to divorce and parents' relationships after divorce don't have to become hostile over custody issues."What kid wouldn't want both of their parents in their life?" divorced mother Alexandra Beckman said. KENOSHA, Wisc. — Lucas Jundt is a junior quarterback at Kenosha Indian Trail High School, in Wisconsin who just happens to have prosthetic legs."Since my Dad showed me football, I'm like, I'm going to play that sport!" Jundt said."Yeah, everybody on the team is like 'why is he getting all the fame.' And I'm like, 'sorry for having no feet. I guess they just like that type of stuff!' And it inspires kids to, you know what? Hey, I can get off of my lazy butt and go out there and do something that I love," Jundt said.To his teammates, Jundt is just one of the guys. "They're like 'no mercy for you. We're just gonna go at you.' And I'm like, 'that's fine. I love it,'" Jundt said.Jundt's story of how he got to Kenosha Indian Trail's football field is the stuff of movies. "My parents abandoned me at five days old. I was born with a condition called fibula hemimelia. I don't know if I'm pronouncing that right, sorry doctors! But I was born with that. That's basically missing a fibula," Jundt explained.Born in Inner Mongolia, he was adopted by a Kenosha couple at age seven."They lost three kids. Two to an hour of life. And one for six years. Cancer, and yeah, it was just rough, they went through a lot of hardship and pain. But God said 'you know what? This is not the end of your story. Your story is still continuing. And I am going to let you adopt a son, and two more kids,'" Jundt said of his adoptive parents.Jundt says his faith keeps him going, and remembers a time talking to another media outlet about it. "I remember one news station didn't put it in, and I'm like 'please, put my faith in there.' Because my faith, is what got me here. Because of God. I am here," Jundt says.
