BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday called on Papua New Guinea to facilitate Chinese investment in the island country in southwest Pacific Ocean."We hope Papua New Guinea will provide conveniences to Chinese business investment in your country and seek common growth," Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang told the visiting Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Michael Somare.Li highlighted Papua New Guinea's role as China's important trade partner and investment destination among Pacific island countries.Bilateral trade totaled about 860 million U.S. dollars in 2008, according to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (R) meets with Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Michael Somare in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 14, 2010.Somare said his country would like to improve the investment environment, promote mutually beneficial cooperation with China and make positive efforts to advance bilateral cooperation and enhance friendship.Somare is leading a delegation to Beijing after his stop in China's port city Tianjin, where he met with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the New Champions 2010, also known as the Summer Davos.This was the second meeting between Li and Somare as Li visited Port Moresby, capital and the largest city of Papua New Guinea, last November.In their meeting in Diaoyutai Guesthouse in western Beijing later Tuesday, Li stressed the good momentum of bilateral relations in recent years, saying the two countries maintained frequent high-level exchanges and sought pragmatic cooperation in a wide range of fields.China and Papua New Guinea shared many political stances, complemented each other economically and enjoyed a huge potential for enhanced relationship, Li said.Looking to the future, Li said China would like to increase exchange of visits, expand trade and investment, explore cooperation in agriculture, forestry, fishery, energy, resources, transportation, culture, education with the island country.Li reaffirmed China's commitment to seeking stronger coordination and cooperation with Papua New Guinea on international and regional issues.Somare will conclude his China visit on Wednesday.

YANGON, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- The 5th Escort Task group of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA)- Navy, made up of two warships -- "Guanhzhou" and "Caohu" made a friendly call at Myanmar Yangon's Thilawa Port Sunday afternoon.It was also the first time for Chinese naval warship to have called at Myanmar port.The five-day mission is aimed at promoting friendly relationships between the two armed forces of the two countries and exchange between the two navies.A grand ceremony was launched to welcome the Chinese warships amid rain, attended by Major Han Sein, Commander of Myanmar Navy Dockyard Base, Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Ye Dabo and other embassy officials as well as representatives of Chinese companies, teachers and students based in Myanmar and local Chinese residents totaling about 200.Chinese naval soldiers and officers of destroyer Guangzhou stand in formation on board upon their arrival at Myanmar Yangon's Thilawa Port, Aug. 29, 2010. ZHENGZHOU, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in charge of culture and publicity has pledged to deepen the nation's reform of its cultural sector over the next five years.More state-owned cultural institutions will be converted into enterprises as the nation builds a competition-based market for cultural products and services, Liu Yunshan, a Secretariat member of the CPC Central Committee and head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, said Monday.Liu was speaking at a workshop on a blueprint for the country's cultural reforms and development for the "12th Five-Year Plan" (2011-2015), which was held in Luoyang in central China's Henan Province.In his speech, the official called for the mapping out of the goals and tasks of the country's cultural development in accordance with the requirements of the Scientific Outlook on Development."Cultural restructuring is fundamental for the emancipation of cultural productivity and the realization of cultural prosperity and development," he said.Other speakers at the meeting included Party officials responsible for local publicity work in the provinces of Henan, Hebei, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Shandong, Guangdong, Yunnan, Shaanxi and Fujian, as well as the autonomous regions of Guangxi and Inner Mongolia.

  

BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) vowed to step up regulation of sugar markets on Sunday after reserves helped stabilize prices which recently rose to a record high amid continuing harsh weather.Between Oct. 10-17, the retail price of small-packed sugar averaged 7.68 yuan per kilogram in major cities, up 1.3 percent from the end of September, according to data provided by the MOC.It shows that prices have begun to stabilize, according to the MOC website. The ministry also vowed to strengthen market regulations.China auctioned 210,000 tonnes of sugar reserves on Oct. 22 in a bid to curb soaring prices, which have been blamed on this season's frequent extreme weather in China's major sugar-producing areas, as well as reduced supplies overseas.In southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the country's major sugar-growing area, sugar prices hit a record 6,000 yuan per tonne (902.3 U.S. dollars) on Oct. 11.Further, sugar futures hit an eight-month high of 683.20 pounds per tonne in London on Oct. 15.Also, the MOC said government reserves remain abundant and pledged to improve market supplies and ensure the public's needs.Between October 2009 and September 2010, eight batches of reserve sugar, or a total of 1.71 million tonnes, were auctioned, according to the MOC.

  

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Thursday that China will join hands with Cuba to strengthen cooperation and promote bilateral relations.Xi made the remarks when meeting with Vice President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, who was here to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of China-Cuba relations.Extending the greetings of China's leadership to President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba Raul Castro Ruz and First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Fidel Castro Ruz, Xi thanked Cabrisas for coming to China to attend the 50th anniversary celebrations.Xi reviewed the history of China-Cuba relations. "The two parties and countries have always had mutual understanding and supported each other since the establishment of ties. The China-Cuba relations have endured the changes of the international situation."China will continue to support Cuba's just fight to maintain its sovereignty and oppose external interference, Xi said.He also spoke highly of the fast development of China-Cuba cooperation in many areas, featuring frequent political exchanges, deepening mutual trust, smooth development of economic relations and trade, expanding cultural exchanges and close coordination in international affairs.Cabrisas said bilateral relations between Cuba and China have witnessed comprehensive development over the past 50 years on the basis of mutual respect, equality and reciprocity.Cuba will further enhance its cooperation with China in investment, trade and tourism, and promote the development of Cuba-China relations and the ties between Latin America and China, Cabrisas said.
