SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UCSD and Scripps Institution of Oceanography alumna Megan McArthur will head to space as the pilot for the SpaceX Crew-2 mission in early 2021, NASA announced this week.The Crew-2 flight will be the second SpaceX Crew Dragon flight to the International Space Station as part of NASA's commercial crew program.McArthur, who received her doctorate in oceanography from Scripps in 2002, traveled to space aboard the space shuttle Atlantis in 2009. She and her crew were part of a 12-day mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. McArthur operated the shuttle's robotic arm that grabbed and released the telescope, making her the last person to "touch" the telescope. She was born in Honolulu but considers California her home state. She holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from UCLA.The SpaceX Crew-2 flight will be her first trip to the International Space Station.Joining McArthur is NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough as mission commander with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Pesquet as mission specialists.McArthur is one of two Scripps Oceanography alumni who are astronauts. Alumna Jessica Meir returned from a visit to the International Space Station in April. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of friends from Del Norte High School in 4S Ranch have turned their summer boredom into a way to help others.Andrew Zhang, Jerry Wu, Nick Genovese and Rishi Peddakama are 3D printing face shields and donating them to local hospitals."I guess we were all just kind of feeling like restless and we needed to do something during this like difficult time," Zhang says on why he and his friends decided to start making PPE from scratch.The boys have turned their summertime hobby into a new non-profit, Shield Our Health Heroes. Their website has a place for donations, and all of the money goes towards materials for more face shields.So far, they've raised enough money to donate 750 face shields to 10 local hospitals."We've been told multiple times that our shields fit better and are better quality than a lot of the shields that they're getting," says Genovese."I really think we are making an impact in our community," adds WU. "Our products are actually really helping these health care workers who need these."The four friends each brought their unique talents to the group effort. Andrew came up with the idea and has spearheaded the project. Rishi built the website and set up the donation PayPal account. Jerry does all of the social media and advertising. Nick contacts the hotels and sets up the deliveries."We try to make it hassle free for them," says Peddakama."We just really want to give back during this time," says Zhang. Getting it repaired could have cost him between and 0, so Warth tried to fix it himself - and failed.In early September, Warth saw a notice for a fixit clinic at a Goodwill store in Serra Mesa, organized by the nonprofit Zero Waste San Diego. For the last four years, the group has been offering free, monthly clinics to help fix the broken: from blenders and barbecues, to lamps and fans.Fixit volunteer Michael Gleason joined the group after he retired. "When we fix someone's lamp and it lights up and the owner's face lights up.  That's the reward for me," said Gleason.He says his success rate is about 50%. 1036

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two men who took part in a fatal Pacific Beach home invasion that resulted in the shotgun slaying of a resident were sentenced Friday to state prison terms.Carlos Yslas, 25, and Pedro Ramirez, 28, were sentenced Friday for their roles in the death of 44-year-old MarcAnthony Mendivil, who was shot in a home in the 2300 block of Wilbur Avenue on Dec. 29, 2018.Mendivil was living at the home of another defendant, Paul Charles Weinberger, 51, at the time of his death and was killed in what court documents describe as a forcible eviction gone wrong.Yslas, who was the gunman in the incident, was sentenced to 27 years in state prison, based on his plea to a voluntary manslaughter charge. Deputy District Attorney Flavio Nominati said Yslas was released from prison on a residential burglary conviction about a week prior to the shooting.RELATED: Three men plead guilty to Pacific Beach shotgun slayingRamirez was sentenced to eight years in prison on Friday, while co- defendant Freddy Sosa, 38, was sentenced last year to eight years in prison. Weinberger was sentenced to three years earlier this week.Sosa pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, while Weinberger pleaded to an assault with a firearm charge.According to court documents, Sosa had previously lived at the home, but was kicked out by Weinberger following a dispute. Mendivil then moved in, but soon after, Weinberger contacted Sosa asking him for help in removing Mendivil from the home for unspecified reasons, investigators were told.Weinberger told police he was drugged on the night of Mendivil's killing and forced to withdraw cash from his bank to pay Yslas and Ramirez, who were brought in to assist in forcibly removing Mendivil from the home, court documents state.However, in the process of forcing Mendivil out, Yslas shot Mendivil twice. According to defense attorney Kristen Haden, Yslas believed the victim was reaching for a weapon, which later turned out to be a knife beneath his mattress.Officers found Mendivil suffering from a gunshot wound when they responded to a 1:47 a.m. call of a possible shooting, San Diego police Lt. Matt Dobbs said. He died at a hospital about 45 minutes later, Dobbs said.Weinberger and Sosa were arrested the day of the killing, while Yslas and Ramirez were already in custody on unrelated charges when they were re- arrested and charged last February for their roles in the homicide. 2430
