SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students from around San Diego are using a modern medium to learn and inspire.The Cesar Chavez Service Clubs, which has chapters at 22 local schools, has launched the "Chavistas Podcast."Once a month, they interview a local leader, learning that person's story. They hope it can inspire other kids to reach for the stars."We feel that, as a community of Chavistas, that we can get a good message of community out there," say Ariana Gallegos, the club supervisor.Gallegos has a background in radio broadcasting and uses that to help the kids craft their interviews."It's a beautiful experience that I get to bring the students to a setting that sometimes is hard to be at," says Galleos. "But it allows them to see that if I can do it, you can do it."Students in the club say it's been a fun experience. They hope other kids will listen and learn."When it turnes out good, it's really nice, just feeling like you accomplished something good," says Wilson Elementary 7th Grader Mecklin Montgomery. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city of San Diego is making sure its homeless students have the right tools to succeed in school.One San Diego’s “We’ll have your back campaign” is distributing thousands of supplies to the San Diego School District’s less fortunate students.Officials estimate more than 6,000 students are homeless in the district.“A lot of these kids don’t get anything new and that’s why we make it is possible,” said Katherine Stuart-Faulconer, the wife of San Diego Mayor Kevin Falconer.One San Diego will have several more similar events and drives this year. 579

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The growing concerns over the coronavirus are impacting the daily routines of people across San Diego. Some businesses are changing the way they do things. CorePower Yoga has dozens of studios across San Diego. Monday morning, the company sent an email to its staff and clients outlining several precautions. Chloe Delehanti works out at the Mission Valley location."I've lived through SARS and Swine Flu, and I don't remember it being this serious of a concern, certainly never getting emails from my gym, or travel alerts, so it's definitely concerning," said Delehanti. The email stated the company is increasing its cleaning protocols and reducing the use of props and physical contact between teachers and clients. "Obviously, I really like adjustments and having that component in class, but I think it's a good idea to be as safe as possible, considering that it is a really growing concern, and there's a lot of new cases," said Delehanti.A salon in Hillcrest is also changing the way it does business. Stylists at Brightside Barber will now have the option of turning away customers who appear sick. "From here on out, not to feel like you can't turn someone away, if they are visibly sick with a fever, coughing," said Angelic Corona. She's been in the business ten years and said she's never seen anything like this. "I was relieved, cause you know, in customer service, it's kind of always been the customer is always right, but in this scenario it's health and safety for everyone," said Corona. A few doors down at Ralphs, shoppers, like Tyler Armstrong, were stocking up on cleaning supplies. "I think it's crazy, and I think a lot of people aren't taking it as serious as they need to, and I think we have something serious on our hands," said Armstrong. 1800

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego Public Utilities department has spend almost 8 million since 2013 to repair and replace 116 miles of water transmission and distribution pipes as part of a program to upgrade it's aging water system, according to documents given to 10News.Most of those repairs (72 miles) were on cast iron pipes, the oldest ones in the system."We have more than 3,000 miles of pipeline," said department spokesperson Brent Eidson, "To do it properly, we're probably always going to be replacing pipes."The project began in 2007 with a rate increase to pay for the work. As older pipes have been replaced, city officials say the number of water main breaks has decreased.The Public Utilities Department gave 10News the following numbers about the amount of breaks over the past 6 years:2012: 1022013: 952014: 742015: 632016: 852017: 66 (as of October 20)"We know we're not going to stop every break," said Eidson. "But if you look at our track record and our pace of replacement, we've seen a significant decline in the number of breaks that we've had."The project replaces aging pipes made out of cast iron or concrete with new PVC pipes. Eidson said that's the industry standard and they have a life expectancy of 50-75 years. He says economics and budgeting led to delays in the older pipes not being replaced sooner.That changed when the rate increase was approved. Now the goal is to replace 30 miles per year.The city says its water system extends over 400 square miles and moves approximately 172 million gallons per day. It includes 49 water pump stations, 29 treated water storage facilities, three water treatment plants and more than 3,300 miles of pipelines.Through the replacement project, the department hopes to have all of the cast iron distribution lines (6-12 inches) replaced by 2018-19. Their goal for the larger cast iron transmission mains (16 inches or bigger) should be finished by 2023.Right now, they say there are still about 46 miles of cast iron pipes in the system, some of them almost 100 years old.Once the cast iron lines are replaced, they'll shift the focus to the older concrete lines."I look at it like painting the Golden Gate Bridge," said Eidson.
