WASHINGTON — The head of an obscure federal agency that is holding up Joe Biden's presidential transition knew well before Election Day that she might have a messy situation on her hands. Prior to Nov. 3, General Services Administration director Emily Murphy held a Zoom call with the man who was in her shoes 20 years earlier during the contested 2000 election between George W. Bush and Al Gore. Seventy-seven-year-old Dave Barram says he gave Murphy some simple advice, telling her, “If you do the right thing, then all you have to do is live with the consequences of it.”However, Murphy finds herself in a much different position than Barram did in 2000. It's been 10 days since President-elect Joe Biden was projected to win Pennsylvania, giving him the 270 electoral college votes to claim the presidency.Though the outcome of the election is clear, Murphy has not yet certified Biden as the winner as President Donald Trump's campaign has filed a bevy of lawsuits — a move that has delayed the official transition of power and which has held up funds that could ease the process. In an address on Monday, President-elect Joe Biden warned that continued delay in beginning the official transition process could lead to lost lives, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic.“More people may die if we don’t coordinate,” Biden said Monday. While most Republicans have followed in the footsteps of Trump and Murphy and refused to recognize Biden as president-elect, a small group within the GOP is becoming more vocal in calling on the President to concede.Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, a moderate member of the GOP, says that continued delay in the transition of power could hamper the government's efforts in distributing a potential COVID-19 vaccine.“It is no easy matter,” Collins said of distributing vaccines. “It’s absolutely imperative for public health, that all of the planning that’s gone on for which the current administration deserves credit, be shared with the new administration.”So far, the lawsuits filed by the Trump campaign have not affected the outcome of the presidential race in any way. On Sunday evening, the campaign dropped a key portion of its lawsuit in Pennsylvania that sought to overturn hundreds of thousands of ballots on the basis of a lack of poll watchers. Instead, the campaign is choosing to focus on the issue of ballot curing, which they allege gave an unfair benefit to Democrats — despite the fact that the process likely did not effect enough ballots to overturn the election. 2526

WASHINGTON — House Democrats will investigate whether Postmaster General Louis DeJoy encouraged employees at his business to contribute to Republican candidates and then reimbursed them in the guise of bonuses, a violation of campaign finance laws. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, House Oversight Committee chair, announced the investigation Tuesday. The Washington Post reports that five people who worked for DeJoy’s former business were urged to write checks and attend fundraisers at his North Carolina mansion. Two former employees said DeJoy would give bigger bonuses to reimburse them. It’s not illegal to encourage employees to contribute to candidates but it is illegal to reimburse them as a way of avoiding federal campaign contribution limits. 753

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Authorities are searching for a man they say was acting suspicious outside an Islamic center in Vista in late March. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the man was seen taking pictures on the Tri-City Islamic Center on March 30. When someone at the center saw the man taking pictures, they invited him inside. When the man saw there were people inside the center, he took off running, deputies say. RELATED: Security tight at San Diego area mosques after arsonIt’s unknown why the man was taking photos, but the department says they are interested in speaking with him. Witnesses describe the man as Hispanic in his late 20s, about five feet, seven inches tall with a lean or muscular build, short, dark hair and a blonde beard. He was last seen wearing a red hat, dark gray sports coat and blue jeans. Anyone who sees something suspicious is asked to call the department at 858-565-5200 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. The incident happened shortly after a fire was set at an Escondido Mosque on March 24. The fire, which caused minimal damage the building, was extinguished by members of the mosque. When authorities arrived, they discovered graffiti referencing the New Zealand mass shooting at the scene. 1265

WASHINGTON — Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced on Twitter Thursday the House and Senate have sent the bipartisan COVID relief bill to President Donald Trump to sign. The announcement comes after efforts to quickly increase direct payments from 0 to ,000 in the stimulus bill initially seemed to have failed to move forward Thursday. In a tweet, Pelosi stated, "The bipartisan COVID relief & omnibus bill has been enrolled. The House & Senate are now sending this important legislation #ForThePeople to the White House for the President’s signature. We urge him to sign this bill into law to give immediate relief to hard-working families!"Earlier Thursday, Pelosi issued a statement that the House will be back in session on Monday, "where we will hold a recorded vote on our stand-alone bill to increase economic impact payments to ,000."After months of negotiations, Congress agreed on and passed nearly a trillion dollars in relief aid Monday. The package includes up to 0 payments to individuals, in addition to supplemental jobless benefits, help for small businesses and a moratorium on evictions. The relief package was also attached to the overall .4 trillion government funding bill, which included federal spending and priorities for the next fiscal year across all departments and agencies.President Donald Trump, who had not personally been involved in the negotiations but rather had surrogates from the administration participate, tweeted a video Tuesday in which he indicated he may not sign the bill and called for larger checks to Americans, around ,000. The bill has not been signed yet. Democrats supported the president’s call, and moved quickly to increase the direct payments to ,000 in order to secure the president’s signature and pass the relief package into law.The House tried to pass the larger payments addendum during a pro forma session, which is a brief meeting of the chamber where typically only a few members attend. Democrats had hoped to approve the measure by unanimous consent. That did not happen, according to The Hill and CNBC.House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer sought to pass the measure, while Representative Rob Wittman wanted to bring up a competing measure, according to The Hill. The representative presiding over the session Thursday morning shot down both requests, saying that according to guidelines, legislation cannot be considered by unanimous consent unless there is the approval of bipartisan leadership. The Republican House leader Kevin McCarthy said the effort was to "re-examine how we spend taxpayer dollars on foreign aid - as President @realDonaldTrump called for." He then thanked Rep. Wittman for "representing Republicans" in the "fight for the American people." 2769
