CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The owner of The Coronado Flower Lady, a popular flower stand along Orange Avenue, is trying to rebuild after a suspected drunk driver destroyed her business. Coronado police say 22-year-old Elias Atayee is being charged with felony DUI after crashing his car into the stand. They say Atayee also had a female passenger inside his car. RELATED: Driver slams into Coronado pole, picnic tables“The fact that there are people drinking and driving, going 90-100 miles per hour, I have my kids out here with me all the time at work," owner Shanel Albert said. "There are tons of kids out here and people. If one of my girls would have been here during the day and that happened, they would have been dead. And that scares me.” Thanks to the City of Coronado, Albert will be back selling her flowers on a table in the same spot until she can permanently rebuild her stand. Country superstar Garth Brooks is bringing a concert to people in their cars across the U.S. later this month.Brooks will host a concert event at 300 drive-in theaters across North America on June 27. He made the announcement on Good Morning America this week. "I am so excited to get to play again. I have missed it so much and want to get back to it," Brooks said in a statement. "This drive-in concert allows us all to get back to playing live music without the uncertainty of what would be the result to us as a community. It’s said to be completely full and actually three times above capacity. Conditions are getting worse as officials with the state’s special committee on migration issues say city and state officials are even looking for a second shelter, but no local businesses are willing to rent out their facilities for the migrants. People at the shelter have reported deteriorating conditions including open sewage drains. The Mexican Navy has set up small kitchens and the Red Cross is providing medical care. CINCINNATI, Ohio - Among the sea of cardboard cut-out faces propped up in stands at MLB stadiums across the country is one specific face, present for teams he was never able to see play in person.Joaquin Oliver, his face among those in the crowds at Great American Ballpark in Ohio and 13 other MLB stadiums, was 17 when he was shot and killed in the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in 2018. His father, Manuel, purchased cutouts in several different baseball stadiums to support his son's love of baseball and to make a statement about gun violence."I am not a baseball fan, so I was learning everything from him, and I was also creating those moments," said Manuel.Joaquin grew up loving baseball. His father loved the quality time the sport gave them together."I just want everybody to understand that life is about magic moments," said Manuel. "And going to the ballpark with your kids is such a magic moment."Manuel said he hopes fans who see the cutout of his son at GABP and other stadiums will be inspired to do something about gun violence, whether that be through voting, educating themselves, or joining an organization.He also founded Change the Ref, an organization that works to inspire a younger generation to help lead the way to change toward a more peaceful future. CINCINNATI, Ohio – The national “If You Give a Child a Book …” campaign will distribute over 165,000 books to kids in low-income households across the country this school year after raising 5,369 during its annual fundraiser this fall.The childhood literacy campaign is led by the Scripps Howard Foundation and supported by employees of The E.W. Scripps Company, members of the Scripps family and communities where Scripps does business in more than 40 markets across the country. The campaign helps Scripps fulfill its vision of creating a better-informed world.Beginning January 2021, each Scripps TV station and national brand will partner with schools and nonprofits in their communities to ensure the books go to children who need them most, whether they are learning in a traditional classroom setting, remotely or a hybrid of the two.Since the campaign’s first year in 2016, more than 352,000 new books have been donated to children facing poverty in communities served by Scripps businesses.
