SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A pet parrot gave its owner quite the scare after flying up into a tall tree in La Jolla.The owner, Katie Anthony, said she camped under the tree all night worried about her African Grey parrot named "Sidekick." Anthony said the bird is domesticated and not used to being in the wild.Anthony called the San Diego Fire Department and crews came out to investigate. SDFD Capt. Margot Johnson - who was retiring Wednesday - climbed up to retrieve the bird, but it took a couple tries to get it down. At one point, another firefighter fought off a falcon in the process."We really appreciate it and very very thankful because we didn't think we were ever going to see him again," Anthony said.Sidekick is now safe and sound. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A possible theft ring may be 'fishing' for checks at local post offices.Kevin, who owns a small business, mailed out several checks to vendors at the post office in Poway on a Friday night. On the next Tuesday morning last month, he got a call from his bank, Wells Fargo. A woman had tried to cash a fake check at a bank in Los Angeles, a typed check for nearly ,500 written out to a woman's name from Kevin's business. The bank rejected it. The bank representative then asked him about two other checks that had just been deposited at other branches. The two fake checks - written out to a different woman for some 0 each - had been deposited for cash in the Los Angeles area."There's definitely anxiety. You don't know how much money has been compromised," said Kevin.Kevin is not alone. In April, 10news featured the story of Barbara Reynolds and her state tax check, stolen and altered after she dropped it off at post office in Mira Mesa. Her check was likely 'fished' out by thieves using a rodent glue trap, before being washed. A chemical solution dissolves away the ink, allowing a thief to fill in the blanks.Another theft victim told 10news the Postal Inspection Service supervisor described to him a possible theft ring that has hit post offices in Encinitas, Poway and Mira Mesa in recent months. 10news has also tracked down reports of similar thefts in Sorrento Valley and Rancho Bernardo."It's frustrating. Never crossed my mind that something dropped off at post office could be compromised," said Kevin. Kevin's bank did cover the loss of the fake checks. 10news reached to the Postal Inspection Service but haven't heard back.Experts say use the slots inside the post office and if you do use an outside collection box, drop off your mail before the final collection time. 1823

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego artist wants to paint murals around the city that she hopes can help bring an end to gun violence."My concept is just something beautiful that people can take a picture in front of and just really enjoy the artwork of it but also take a message away from it," says Hanna Daly.Her concept is a series of artworks that look like colorful doorways. Each will have a message written above them, like 'Thoughts and Prayers Aren't Enough.""I thought it could be, like, a doorway to change," Daly says. "You walk away from it thinking, maybe there's a little something I can do. Like a doorway you step through it and now you're part of the cause."Daly became part of the cause last year, when her brother comitted suicide. He had shot himself in the head."Then a few weeks after that was Las Vegas," she says. "And then another shooting and another. It just kept hitting me, so I finally thought I should do something."Daly is working with with the Brady Campaign and Moms Demand Action on the project. She has the designs, just not the space to paint them."We need some people with some great walls out there that are visible, on main drags, where people are going to see it, where we can create some beautiful art, but that has a strong message," she says.She's hoping to paint the murals in high traffic areas like the Gaslamp District or along the boardwalks near beaches. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A reported threat to San Diego State University campus was deemed not credible, according to campus police.University police were told of a person making "incoherent threats" on campus Thursday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diegan who was killed in the mass shooting at the Borderline Bar was honored Thursday on the anniversary of the attack, both in Coronado and Thousand Oaks.Justin Meek's family attended a large public dedication ceremony for the Healing Garden in Thousand Oaks, a park and permanent memorial site with 12 stone slabs representing the victims."It's not that we are moving on, but that we are moving forward," Meek's father Roger said in an interview.RELATED: Coronado native among victims of the Thousand Oaks bar shootingMeek, a promoter and occasional security guard at the bar, broke out windows so others could escape when gunfire erupted last November, according to family members.
