WASHINGTON — An obscure government agency President Donald Trump created is working behind the scenes to inspire confidence in the vote amid unprecedented challenges. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency, CISA, which Trump signed into existence in 2018, is working with other parts of the government to safeguard an election in the middle of a pandemic.Trump hasn’t made it easy by predicting that voting at a time of COVID-19 will be a “disaster,” insisting mail-in balloting is a recipe for fraud and dismissing reports of Russian interference.CISA quietly offers a counternarrative on these issues and more, and its director projects optimism about the election.CISA started a website, CISA.Gov/RumorControl, to help answer frequent questions about election and voting safety, offer a “risk profile tool,” and provide information to combat misinformation online.Last week, the FBI and CISA released two alerts. One alert warned Iranian hackers are creating fictitious media sites and spoofing media sites to spread voter registration data, anti-American propaganda and misinformation about voter suppression, voter fraud and ballot fraud. The other alert said since at least September, Russian hackers have conducted a campaign against a wide variety of US targets and taken data from at least two servers.Voters are encouraged to contact their local and state election officials for information on voting. 1421

Video appears to show a person pulled into an unmarked minivan as NYPD officers keep protesters away from the vehicle in Manhattan on Tuesday night.Protesters were near East 25th Street and Second Avenue when several arrests were made, police said. It's not clear why the arrests were made.Only one person was shown being taken into the minivan. A man in an orange shirt with "Warrant Squad" written across the back got into the front passenger seat before the minivan drove off. That woman was taken into custody because she allegedly damaged police cameras during five separate incidents in and around City Hall Park, NYPD officials said. Police said the arresting officers were assaulted with rocks & bottles. The NYPD has been using unmarked vehicles for decades, a spokesman said."The Warrant Squad uses unmarked vehicles to effectively locate wanted suspects," the NYPD tweeted.New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson called it "incredibly disturbing."Public Advocate Jumaane Williams said he was looking into it."Concerned about what we are seeing in this video," he tweeted.Lawmakers throughout the city called for answers. Councilman Carlos Menchaca told New Yorkers to keep recording police officers."This cannot be tolerated," he tweeted. "This is a terrifying display of unaccountable power. Who is next?"An NYPD official initially said they couldn't share any additional information for security reasons for the officers.Watch video of the incident below (Note: video contains strong language): 1521
WASHINGTON — Congress is poised to pass one of the largest economic relief bills in history on Monday. New forms of direct payments will be issued to millions Americans under the bill, assuming it passes and is signed by President Donald Trump. HOW MUCH WILL YOU GET? The IRS will issue checks based on your AGI or adjusted gross income. The information will come from your latest tax return which for most Americans is the 2019 calendar year. If you earn ,000 a year or less, you'll receive 0. If you earn between ,000 and ,000 a year, the amount will be prorated. The more your make, the less you'll get until you hit that ,000 threshold. Earners over that amount will not receive any money. Head of households will be able to earn up to 2,000 a year and still be eligible for a check. Couples who file their taxes jointly will earn similar levels to those who file individually. For instance, a couple who earns 0,000 or less a year will receive ,200. Couples who earn between 0,000 and 4,000 will receive less than ,200.Those with dependents, such as a child, will earn 0 per child. That's actually 0 more than what dependents received earlier this year. WHEN WILL CHECKS BE SENT?Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin said as soon as Congress approves the deal, he'll be able to begin depositing checks within a week. Those with direct deposit on file with the IRS will receive their money first. Paper checks will take longer. 1482
WASHINGTON — The number of laid-off Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell to roughly 880,000 last week, a sign of possible improvement but evidence that the viral pandemic keeps forcing many businesses to slash jobs. The latest figures, released Thursday by the Labor Department, suggest that nearly six months after the eruption of the coronavirus, the economy is still struggling to sustain a recovery and rebuild a job market that was devastated by the recession. All told, the government said that 13.3 million people are continuing to receive traditional jobless benefits, up from 1.7 million a year ago. 629
