SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego native made history at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, becoming the first above-the-knee double amputee to finish what many consider the world's most grueling endurance race. Roderick Sewell crossed the finish line of the 140-mile triathlon race in 16 hours and 26 minutes and immediately embraced his mother. The two lived in San Diego homeless shelters when Sewell was growing up."It's amazing to see how far we've come in 20 years," said the 27-year-old.It's even more amazing when you consider that Sewell had never completed a marathon before Saturday's competition. The Ironman triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 114-mile bike ride, and ends with a 26.2-mile marathon.On top of that, Sewell had only six months to train after receiving an invitation from the Ironman organization."I had no bike. I didn't own one" until a few months before the competition, said Sewell. Sewell raced with strategy help from his longtime friend and mentor Rudy Garcia-Tolson. Garcia-Tolson became the first above-the-knee double amputee to finish any Ironman 10 years ago."Back when I first met Roderick, he was about 8 years old. He was actually petrified of the water," Garcia-Tolson said. "Whatever life is throwing at you, mental or physical challenges, you have to fight and get over those and strive for better."Sewell, whose legs were amputated at 2 years old because he was born without tibias, credits much of his success to the San Diego-based Challenged Athletes Foundation. He was introduced to the group at 8 years old."I didn't do any kind of sports. I wasn't very physically active," he said. "And then I started with them and got started in every sport I could."CAF gave Sewell his first running blades at a time when he and his mother were living in homeless shelters."If I can inspire someone, it's a blessing," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A vandal targeted at least a dozen vehicles at a popular shopping center in University City on Friday, flattening tires across one of the parking lots."It's very upsetting," said Camille Bsaibes.Bsaibes showed 10news a Toyota RAV4 with a flat tire. The vehicle belongs to his son. Bsaibes, who owns Amardeen restaurant, located in the Renaissance Towne Centre, experienced his own flat tire Friday while driving his van. Bsaibes didn't notice it until he was one the road."When I was driving, I was shaking ... wondering why it was shaking," said Bsaibes.Bsaibes pulled over and found three of his tires flat. His total bill to replace tires? Nearly 0. That day, three of his employees also felt their tires go flat as they were driving home from work. They were all parked in the same back lot. It was a similar story for four employees of the L-Transformation beauty boutique. In all, at least 12 vehicles from 4 of the businesses were hit in one day. It happened in broad daylight at the busy shopping center, sometime between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m."The tire shop said somebody used a long, sharp object and punctured the side of the wheel," said Bsaibes.The flat tires weren't immediately obvious and didn't become a problem until the vehicle were on the road. Many working at the shopping center wonder if that was on purpose. Was the vandal hoping to cause havoc on the roads? "I'm glad everyone is safe. It could have been worse. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego woman has filed a claim against the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department after she says she was groped by one of their deputies.The complaint by the unidentified "Jane Doe" alleges that Deputy Richard Fischer "rubbed and fondled" her on Aug. 20, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.It claims Fischer was sent to her home with another deputy about 3 a.m. for a welfare check, but he returned alone an hour later and asked to be let inside."Fischer lied to her and said he needed to use her restroom," the claim states. "Jane Doe let him into her home, but immediately realized the restroom claim was just a ruse to get in the house."It goes on, "Fischer told the woman he thought she was cute, hugged her for 10 seconds without consent and then rubbed his hands down her torso, shoulders, arms, back and buttocks. After the hug, he told her again he thought she was good looking, then hugged her again; the woman resisted more aggressively the second time.The woman has now filed a million claim against the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.In response, the department has placed Deputy Fischer on administrative assignment.The department responded to the claim in part by saying, “…the department holds all of our employees to the highest standards and is in the process of conducting a prompt and thorough investigation into the allegations.”The woman says she has no surveillance video to back up her claim, but thinks the sheriff’s own technology will provide proof of her claim.The woman said when Deputy Fischer came back to her home, he arrived in one of the department’s marked vehicles, vehicles that have GPS monitoring.Among the allegations against the Sheriff's Department are sexual assault and battery, sexual harassment and infliction of emotional distress.Read the department's full statement below: "The Department has received a complaint and claim from a female adult alleging inappropriate hugging by Deputy Fischer.  The employee was immediately moved to an administrative assignment upon notification of the complaint.  The Sheriff's Department does not comment on pending criminal or internal investigations.  However, the department holds all of our employees to the highest standards and is in the process of conducting a prompt and thorough investigation into the allegations." 2372

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A well-known San Diego restaurant plans to close for good this July. Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant will close its Mission Valley restaurant on July 16, 2019, according to paperwork filed by the company. Although no reason was given for the closure, 79 employees are expected to lose their jobs. The layoff notice was filed by the company on June 5 and says, in part, that the company will “continue the employment of all employees through the sixtieth day after the date of this notice, and all employees will be paid your regular wages and benefits through that date.”The brewery and restaurant first opened in 1988 in Palo Alto before expanding in 1999. Gordon Biersch currently operates 35 restaurants in the U.S., though it’s unclear if any other locations plan to close. 808
