SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thirteen people overcoming a unique set of obstacles plan to conquer a 13.1-mile marathon this weekend.They're called the Lucky 13."It takes a lot of courage, and you've got to be really brave, even just to apply," said Paul Carey, the Lucky 13 Coordinator, and Head Coach.The Tri-City Medical Center program assists those who have had or are currently overcoming health obstacles to achieve their fitness goals. For six months, they're professionally trained and receive wellness support ahead of the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Half-Marathon."Everything good I have in my life can be traced back to Lucky 13 and being part of that," said Carey, who was a participant years ago.For 30 years Carey felt trapped in his bipolar diagnosis.During that time, he was on heavy medications, had several psychiatric hospital stays, and underwent 50 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy.Then he found the Lucky 13 program."It's an endless foundation of support that's just something really remarkable," said Carey. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thousands of people enjoyed San Diego County beaches, despite the ongoing Beach Hazard Warnings.The National Weather Service announced there would be high surf, high tides, and strong rip currents on the San Diego County coastline. This Beach Hazard Warning continues until Sunday. Whether you're playing, laying, or even working on this July 4th holiday, spending time at Mission Beach was a dream come true. Especially if you were the Newman family, escaping the Phoenix heat. "When we left, I think it was 114 degrees," Bryant Newman said. They said it just doesn't compare. "We used to hang out a lot at the resorts there locally [in Phoenix], but we have been coming to California for Fourth of July for the last for five or six years," Newman said.But let's not forget about the Beach Hazard Warnings, still in effect until Sunday. "They did warn us about high surf before I left the hotel this morning," visitor from LA, Saira Kinuthia said. Kinuthia is not letting her two boys out of sight. She said while they are here for fun, safety comes first. "We had our talk, and if the lifeguard says that we need to come out of the water, then we have to come out of the water," Kinuthia said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The U.S. Postal Service will dedicate the Sally Ride Forever stamp to America’s first woman in space.The first-day-of-issue dedication ceremony will take place Wednesday at the University of California San Diego, where Dr. Sally Ride taught.After the ceremony, Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego will honor her with a 6:30 p.m. panel discussion on women in leadership.Ride dazzled the nation as a trailblazing astronaut, brilliant scientist, and dedicated educator.Her journey to space began in 1977 while she was finishing her Ph.D. in physics at Stanford University. She saw an article in the student newspaper saying NASA was seeking astronaut candidates, and for the first time, women were allowed to apply.Five years later, Ride became the first American woman to reach space when she launched in the Challenger for a six-day expedition.She was 32 at the time, making her the youngest American to go to space.After retiring from NASA in 1989, she took a job as a physics professor at UC San Diego and became the director of the university’s California Space Institute.Ride used her experiences in space to explain difficult physics concepts to her students.In 2001, she co-founded Sally Ride Science, a company dedicated to fostering interest in STEM fields among children, especially girls.Ride was honored for her contributions to science and space exploration with the NASA Space Flight Medal and the NCAA's Theodore Roosevelt Award. Those who came here for a better life say they are contributing to the economy and their communities. They say it's unfair to paint all undocumented immigrants as criminals.Jesus Mendez Carbajal, a DACA recipient and Human Rights Organizer for Alliance San Diego, believes the lawsuit is unfair and infringes on state's rights.However, some U.S. citizens say it's about time an administration took serious action against states.Brenda Sparks recently moved out of California because of its sanctuary laws. She doesn't believe the state is doing enough to protect its legal citizens.Now she lives in Mesa, Arizona.Almost seven years ago, Spark's son Eric was killed when an undocumented immigrant without a drivers license hit him. Sparks believes if the United States was tougher on illegal immigration her son would still be alive today. 1063

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The suspect of a Spring Valley murder nearly seven years has been arrested in New York.Waverly James, 49, was arrested in New York for the Dec. 6, 2012, murder of 52-year-old Stanford Roy Johnson, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.Deputies say they were called to a home in the 9000 block of Lemon St. on Dec. 6, 2012, for a welfare check. Deputies found the rear door open and discovered Johnson dead from multiple stab wounds.James was identified as a suspect and arrested on a warrant in New York. He will be extradited to San Diego and booked for murder. 599
