(CNN) -- President Donald Trump in a statement on Saturday said late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden's son Hamza bin Laden had been "killed in a United States counterterrorism operation in the Afghanistan/Pakistan region."He did not give a time period for the operation or the death."The loss of Hamza bin Ladin not only deprives al-Qa'ida of important leadership skills and the symbolic connection to his father, but undermines important operational activities of the group," the President said in the statement.Trump also said "Hamza bin Ladin was responsible for planning and dealing with various terrorist groups."CNN previously reported on July 31 that the US believed Hamza bin Laden was dead, citing a US official. The official told CNN at the time that the US had a role in this death but did not provide details.CNN terrorism analyst Paul Cruickshank told CNN at the time that one thing puzzled researchers who are closely tracking al Qaeda: "If Hamza bin Laden has indeed been dead for months, you would expect al Qaeda to have released some form of eulogy before today. The fact they haven't is highly unusual, given his status in the group."US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper also appeared to confirm in a Fox News interview in August that Hamza bin Laden was dead.Earlier this year the US State Department called bin Laden, who was believed to be in his early 30s, an "emerging" leader in the terror group, offering a million-dollar reward for information leading to his capture.The State Department said items seized from the elder bin Laden's hiding place in Pakistan during the US Navy SEAL raid in 2011 that resulted in his death indicated he was grooming Hamza bin Laden to replace him as al Qaeda's leader.Saudi Arabia revoked Hamza bin Laden's citizenship, official newspaper Um al-Qura reported earlier this year, citing a royal order issued to the Interior Ministry. 1896

(KGTV) -- As evacuation orders remain in place, those on the frontlines of the Valley Fire continue to work around the clock -- either battling the fire or helping get animals to safety.The San Diego Humane Society, like fire crews, have been working since the fire erupted. Although their jobs are drastically different, they do have some of the same training.The Humane Society’s Emergency Response Team has been rescuing animals from the path of the flames. The team has helped small pets like cats and dogs, as well as larger farm animals.At one point during a rescue on Sunday, Humane Society teams were forced to turn around as the fire jumped the road in front of them.“It's still scary, you have to understand that fire behavior, you have to understand what's happening when you see it coming down and how far you need to be away from up,” said Lt. The photo from the Lakeside Fire Protection District shows Engineer Danny Leetch taking a much-needed break after being on the fire's frontlines for 26 straight hours.Ahead of Santa Ana winds, crews are already preparing for what could come.“Discussions are being had as we speak, the plans are being built as we speak, it's just a matter of being ready for when the weather does change,” Sanchez said.Fire officials are asking those in the path of the fire to listen when evacuation orders are issued to avoid having to pull crews for a rescue.“We're taking those resources away from the firefight and nothing could have an impact on our operation than to have to redirect resources that could be engaged in putting out this fire,” Sanchez said. 2341

(KGTV) — A reminder to dog owners as hot weather settles into San Diego: Watch out for your pooch's paws.The general rule of thumb for hot weather is if it's too hot to put your hand on the ground, it's too hot for your dog's paws.In Medical Lake, Wash., a dog named Olaf is now recovering after its owner failed to properly protect his dog's paws. The Medical Lake Veterinary Hospital posted photos showing Olaf's pads burned off:"Olaf walked over a mile ... before his owner realized his pads were burned, and even then he wasn't whining or limping!" the hospital posted. "He is one tough cookie (and exceptionally sweet cookie.)"Olaf's owner told KEPR he didn't notice his dog's injury until he saw bloody paw prints on the ground and that the the injury exposed raw muscle.Veterinary experts suggest dog owners protect their dog's paws using pet boots, paw wax, or socks.
