AURORA, Colo. -- It’s a common work-from-home scam that has duped many, but this time it has a cryptocurrency twist.A couple in Aurora, Colorado who did not wish to be identified, shared their story with Scripps station KMGH in Denver about being tricked into laundering thousands of dollars, in order to keep others from falling for the scam as well. KMGH changed their names and disguised their identities to protect them. "It all fell apart so quickly," said John, who along with Marie, ignored the red flags all around them. "We don't want to go to jail. We laundered money and we stole money from people, that's what it could look like to someone."They thought they had found the perfect job: working from home as “financial agents” for a company called Golden Potatoes. At the time, never meeting their boss in person made sense because the company was headquartered out of state and the website looked legitimate.A Colorado Bureau of Investigation spokesperson told KMGH she sees these schemes often, so does Krista Ferndelli with the Better Business Bureau."The contact information. The three people on the site, they may be actual people but they look very much like stock photos," said Ferndelli. The couple interviewed over the phone and received paperwork detailing the benefits, the salary and the company car. Marie was asked to send a selfie photo of herself holding her ID.John said his boss “Alex” instructed the couple to open up bank accounts. They would then receive deposits from customers who they believe were paying for a shipment of potatoes or olive oil."I felt like it was a prayer answered. Like honestly. This money was real," said John. “This money is legit. This is real cash. This is not a check. Nothing is bouncing. Nothing is being drawn to my attention. I’m going to Wells Fargo. They’re handing me ,000 in cash. They’re not saying anything to me.”They would then convert the money to Bitcoin currency and then send it back to "Alex." John and Marie would also get to keep 5 percent of each check, they were told."We hear a lot about Bitcoin because it's so new. People are uninformed and unaware. It’s hard to trace. It’s kind of the ideal payment method for fraud," Ferndelli said. The couple had processed close to 0,000 when the strangers started calling."One of the customers that was supposed to be paying for potatoes and oil says, 'where's my car?'" said Marie.John and Marie said someone posing as them on Craigslist pretended to sell high ticket items like an ATV or SUV and an interested buyer would pay for it.“The couple thought they had purchased an ATV for ,000 off of Craigslist and that, you know, I had sent them my information to confirm that I’m a real person and to put that money into my account.”The bank froze their accounts and unfortunately, John and Marie had mixed their own money into those accounts, too."We have no money because the bank took all of our money," said Marie. They contacted the FBI and local law enforcement. KMGH reached out to the FBI about John and Marie's case, but they wouldn't comment. KMGH also emailed and called Golden Potatoes, but received no response and were hung up on, respectively."I took the brunt of this. I don't want it to happen to anyone else," said John.Silver Oils and Platinum Oils are both companies linked to Golden Potatoes and have the same address listed for business in Portland. The BBB recently cited Platinum Oils. For more information about common scams via Wells Fargo, visit this page. The FBI has compiled a list of the most?common fraud schemes and it includes tips on how to spot fraud so you don't become a victim.  3728

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, India's tenth prime minister, died Thursday in New Delhi at the age of 93.A statement released by the hospital treating him said "his condition deteriorated over the last 36 hours and he was put on life support systems. Despite the best of efforts, we have lost him today.""India grieves the demise of our beloved Atal Ji. His passing away marks the end of an era. He lived for the nation and served it assiduously for decades. My thoughts are with his family, BJP Karyakartas and millions of admirers in this hour of sadness. Om Shanti," tweeted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Celebrity deaths of 2018: Remembering those we've lost this yearVajpayee was prime minister briefly in 1996 and 1998 before eventually serving a full term as premier from 1999 to 2004. He had been admitted in June to the All India institute of Medical Sciences in the capital, suffering from a urinary tract infection and chest congestion. His condition worsened, eventually becoming fatal.Vajpayee never married. He is survived by his adopted daughter, Namita.During his political career, Vajpayee's name became synonymous in India with the rise of the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), which he helped found in the 1980s. His ascent to the premiership signaled the renewal of the party, which had grown to become the main opposition to the Indian National Congress before eventually overtaking that party.Vajpayee's tenure as India's leader was marked by significant developments in the country's defense policy, and he oversaw India joining the world's nuclear weapons club in 1998.Facing heavy criticism at home and abroad over India's nuclear ambitions, Vajpayee defied the threat of economic sanctions, telling parliament that "we have never made a decision after coming under international pressure and we will never do so in the future."Born in December 1924, Vajpayee grew up in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and was one of the founders of the Janata Party, a splinter group of which became the modern BJP. During his youth he was briefly a member of the right wing Hindu nationalist group Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and was arrested along with his brother in 1942 for protesting against British rule.Vajpayee won his first election to parliament in 1957, a decade after independence. He would go on to hold that role for nine terms.Though he was elected prime minister three times, Vajpayee only competed an entire term once. His first government collapsed in less than three weeks in 1996, and while he took power again in 1998, this only last 13 months before a disagreement within the ruling coalition sparked new elections.Vajpayee was returned to the premiership in 1999 after his BJP-led coalition secured a comfortable majority in the wake of a two-month long war with Pakistan over control of Kashmir. In late 2001, India's parliament was hit by a terrorist attack which Delhi blamed on Pakistan, while in 2002, riots in Gujarat claimed the lives of hundreds of Muslims.Despite India's contentious seven-decade relationship with Pakistan, Vajpayee is credited with being the only Indian leader to make significant progress in peace talks with the country's nuclear-armed neighbor.Even as he pursued a nuclear agreement with Pakistan, Vajpayee remained a defiant defender of India's security policy, an approach which eventually paid off. Economic sanctions imposed after the country's first atomic test were finally lifted in 2000 when Bill Clinton visited the country, the first US President to do so in 22 years. Vajpayee also improved relations with Beijing, officially recognizing Tibet as part of China.A talented orator, one of Vajpayee's most remembered speeches was a hugely critical one, bemoaning India's lack of progress after five decades of independence."Our country is counted amongst the poorest in the world," he said. "We can't make primary education a necessity. We are still expecting that girls should be educated. The birth of a girl in this country is still a curse."More than 15 years after the speech was given, however, the country continues to be plagued by many of the same problems.Away from politics, Vajpayee is also remembered as an accomplished poet, releasing many books over the years filled with Hindi poems.Just as his fellow BJP prime minister, Narendra Modi, has focused on promoting "brand India," Vajpayee saw great success in building his country's reputation around the world. He addressed the United Nations General Assembly in 2001 and a joint session of the US Congress in 2000. Bilateral agreements signed between his government and Moscow set the stage for annual summits which continue to this day, as does the close relationship with China he cultivated."At a time when an external stimulus has motivated us to unite against terrorism and for security, let us summon an equally strong inner resolve for development and poverty alleviation," Vajpayee said in his speech to the UN. "They are just as crucial for a global order at peace with itself."The-CNN-Wire 5061

Attorneys for former FBI Director James Comey and the US House of Representatives fought in court Friday afternoon over whether Comey must testify to Congress in a private hearing next week. While Comey technically seeks to pause or kill the subpoena, he is using the case to air his accusation that members of the Republican-led House and Senate selectively leak details for their own benefit when they call witnesses to testify in private.Attorneys for the House called Comey's request "so extraordinary and frivolous that, as far as undersigned counsel is aware, no district court in the history of the Republic has ever granted such a request."Judge Trevor McFadden said at the hearing that he hoped to rule Monday morning after meeting again with both legal teams. The meat of Friday's dispute was how each side characterizes Comey's congressional subpoena. Comey's team says Congress is in violation of its own rules by not conducting its fact-finding hearing in public. The hearing won't require that level of secrecy because no sensitive law enforcement information is expected to be discussed, Comey's team said. The House general counsel countered that because Comey's testimony would be a deposition with staff, a public session isn't required.McFadden asked whether Comey could release a transcript of his testimony to get the full picture before the public. But Comey's lawyers said that would take too much time, allowing leaks of the information before Comey could release his full testimony. When McFadden asked Comey's attorney whether he agreed with the House that a judge has never limited Congress in this way before, the lawyer David Kelley responded, "Here's your opportunity, Judge."Comey has said he would like to testify publicly about the separate investigations into Hillary Clinton's email practices and Russian interference in the 2016 election -- in front of live TV cameras as he has done before."The broader purpose of these tweets and leaks appears to be to mislead the public and to undermine public confidence in the FBI and the DOJ during a time when President Trump and members of his administration and campaign team are reported to be under investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller and other law enforcement authorities," Comey wrote in his complaint. He says he is a "victim" of Congress' "unauthorized and abusive tactics."Comey did not attend Friday's hearing in person. He has asked the judge to issue an emergency order to pause the congressional proceedings and to quash the subpoena. In theory, Comey could lose his court challenge and still win what he's seeking, if he manages to convince the judge to pause his subpoena until the House flips to Democratic control at year's end.The case initially was set to be heard by Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump appointee, then was reassigned randomly to McFadden, also a Trump appointee, after Kelly likely recused from the case. 2941

As many restaurants navigate reopening during the COVID-19 pandemic, some have had to close their doors for good. Many of the hardest hit are buffet-style restaurants as national and state agencies are trying their best to safely keep buffets operating."The toughest part of restaurants right now is if you’ve got a buffet, how do you provide that safely? And so what we’ve guided folks currently is that you can have a buffet but you have to have somebody serve you," says Rob Mortensen, President and CEO of Hospitality Tennessee. The group is working closely with the National Restaurant Association and government officials to provide guidelines for restaurants and hotels during the coronavirus pandemic."As I worked with [Tenn. Gov. Bill Lee] on guidance for restaurants and attractions, our biggest issues are around buffets and big sporting events where you have tens of thousands of people together, because it’s hard to reduce that contact," says Mortensen. Many people are used to being able to serve yourself at a buffet but experts are now advising buffet-style restaurants to instead have restaurant employees serve customers. Even hotels that normally offer a morning buffet are instead offering their guests breakfast to-go."I would say look at how you’re doing things. If it makes sense to serve people from the buffet I think for the next short bit that’s going to be the most challenging thing we’re going to address," says Mortensen.Recently, national chain Sweet Tomatoes, also known as Souplantation in Southern California, announced it's closing all 97 of its locations permanently due to COVID-19. In a statement on their website, Sweet Tomatoes thanked their 4,400 employees and their customers who have shown an outpouring of support for the salad bar and buffet since it first opened more than 40 years ago."That’s extremely sad and I would say, you know one of the things in my role watching this over the last four months as my wife has said I’ve probably aged 20 years, because it’s hard and you know the difference between keeping somebody safe and a business going under I mean the hardships there are on both sides," says Mortensen.Mortensen expects a real fundamental change in how buffets will operate for the foreseeable future, with many looking to reinvent themselves in order to stay open. 2335
