NEW YORK, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived here Monday for a UN climate change summit and other UN meetings. He will also attend a financial summit of the Group of 20 (G20) in Pittsburgh scheduled for Sept. 24-25.     President Hu will attend a UN climate change summit in New York on Tuesday, address the general debate of the 64th Session of the UN General Assembly Wednesday, and participate in a Security Council summit on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament on Thursday, said Chinese Foreign Ministry officials.     In a note to heads of state and government regarding the summit, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said "the objective of the Summit on Climate Change, which I am convening on Sept. 22, is to mobilize the political will and vision needed to reach an ambitious agreed outcome based on science at the UN climate change talks in Copenhagen." He will also attend a financial summit of the Group of 20 (G20) in Pittsburgh scheduled for Sept. 24-25The vice minister expressed the hope that "the summit would send a positive signal," emphasizing joint efforts to make the Copenhagen conference a success.     During the general debate of the UN General Assembly Wednesday, Hu is expected to elaborate on China's stand on major global and regional issues.     In his speech, President Hu will outline China's ideas about how to safeguard world peace, boost common development, promote mutual benefit and seek harmonious co-existence, said Chinese Foreign Ministry officials.     On Thursday, President Hu will attend a special session of the UN Security Council on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, which is proposed and chaired by U.S. President Barack Obama     "The session will focus on nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament broadly, and not on any particular countries," U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice said on Sept. 2.     Chinese diplomats said that President Hu will elaborate on China's ideas of realizing common security through a win-win approach to mutual benefits.     Hu will put forward China's propositions on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, peaceful use of nuclear power, nuclear security and other issues concerning the international community, they said.     Following the UN meetings, President Hu will fly to Pittsburgh for the G20 summit.     At the summit, Hu and leaders of other G20 members will review the progress made since the Washington and London summits and discuss further actions to assure a sound and sustainable recovery from the global financial and economic crisis.     "The Pittsburgh summit is an important opportunity to continue the hard work that we have done in confronting the global economic crisis, and renewing prosperity for our people," Obama said on Sept. 8.     "Together, we will review the progress we have made, assess what more needs to be done, and discuss what we can do together to lay the groundwork for balanced and sustainable economic growth," he added.     The Pittsburgh summit is the third since the ones in Washington last November and in London in April this year.     The G20 was formally established in 1999 to bring together major industrialized and developing economies to discuss key issues in the global economy.     The G20 consists of China, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, Britain, the United States, and the European Union.     China expects the summit to achieve positive results in macroeconomic policy coordination, reform of international financial organization, development and measures against protectionism, said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He.

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales of consumer goods totaled 570 billion yuan (about 83.5 billion U.S. dollars) during the National Day holiday, with average daily sales up 18 percent compared with the same period of last year, the Ministry of Commerce said Friday.     Sales of household appliances soared during the eight-day holiday which started from Oct. 1. Among them, high-definition flat screen TV sets, digital cameras, side-by-side refrigerators and 3G mobile phones are consumers' favorites. In the case of Kaiyuan Mall in Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, sales of household appliances gained by 34.7 percent year on year. Customers are seen at a shopping mall in Shanghai, east China, Oct. 8, 2009    Jewelry and cars became hot sellers as well. The sales of jewelry of Caishikou Department Store in Beijing topped 100 million yuan, up 30 percent year on year. BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee hosted a symposium here Saturday to solicit advice and suggestions from outside the Party on its document concerning strengthening and improving Party building.     Hu Jintao, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, briefed the participants on how the document of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee was weighed and finally formed. He asked them to freely voice their opinions on revising the document.     Chairmen of the central committees of eight non-communist parties and personages without party affiliation like Health Minister Chen Zhu offered their suggestions on issues including strengthening the intra-Party democracy, fighting corruption and improving the leadership style.     "The suggestions are valuable and insightful," said Hu. "They are a reflection of the close cooperative relations between the CPC and the non-communist parties."     "We will study them and try to learn from them," he said.     Hu said that being a ruling party in a country with a population of more than 1.3 billion, the CPC is shouldering an arduous task. The CPC will stick to the principle that the Party exercises self-discipline and is strict with its members. It will strengthen Party building and improve its art of leadership and governance.     Hu stressed that the CPC will work hard to enhance its abilities of resisting corruption, guarding against degeneration and warding off risks.     Members of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau Jia Qinglin, Xi Jinping and He Guoqiang also attended the symposium.     The Fourth Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee, which was concluded Friday, endorsed the decision of the CPC Central Committee on major issues on strengthening and improving Party building under the new circumstances.     A communique issued upon the closing of the four-day plenum vowed to "expand intra-Party democracy to develop people's democracy" and resolutely fight corruption." It also acknowledged that quite a few problems existed inside the Party that ran counter to new circumstances and to the Party's nature.

BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's limits on the use of plastic bags cut crude oil consumption by 3 million tonnes per year, according to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).     Since June 1, 2008, all Chinese retailers, including supermarkets, department stores and groceries, no longer provided free plastic shopping bags. In addition, China banned ultra-thin plastic bags, or those thinner than 0.025 mm.     China is trying to cut the use of plastic bags in a bid to reduce energy consumption and polluting emissions.     The plastic bag limits could save about 2.4 million to 3.0 million tonnes of crude oil every year and cut 7.6 million to 9.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year, the NDRC said.     The NDRC said it would further implement the regulations and inspect execution of the ban nationwide.     Retailers who did not list shopping bags on the receipts or continued to provide free plastic shopping bags would be fined from 5,000 yuan (732.06 U.S. dollars) to 10,000 yuan, according to the State Administration for Industry and Commerce.
