SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Starting in September, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar will become a "living lab" for brand new technology, helping shape how tech can benefit our military and cities in the future. The base is one of 12 Naval X "Tech Bridges" in the nation, partnering the Marine Corps, Navy, academia, and private businesses to test and develop leading-edge tech.To prepare the base, Verizon installed a brand new 5G network in July, making the base the first in the nation with this capability.Lt. Col. Brandon Newell, Director of Naval X Southern California Tech Bridge, said Miramar was ideal because of its location, size, and layout."We’ve been building toward this for three years," Lt. Col. Newell said. One of the four projects that will be happening this fall is creating a "digital fortress." Lt. Col. Newell said that means self-learning technology will replace traditional fences and enhance gate security. He painted a picture of what it would look like with extra tech at MCAS Miramar's gate. "[A Marine] is scrutinizing your ID and your face the moment they have with you before they allow you on. While you're cued up in the line waiting, the power of computer vision and machine learning could help us assist in knowing who’s new to the base, who hasn’t come with that vehicle before," Lt. Col. Newell said.Perimeter surveillance will get a boost from Orange County-based defense tech startup, Anduril. The company created Sentry Towers, a compact, self-powered, learning surveillance tool already set up at MCAS Yuma. They plan to set up three towers at MCAS Miramar along the perimeter in the next two to three weeks. The towers will monitor the landscape through video and sensors that map the area."It learns the tipping factors of what is something of interest and what is something not of interest in locations where we don’t have a lot of visibility sometimes," Lt. Col. Newell said. This tech gives Marines physical space and therefore protection during the pandemic, "allows Marines and law enforcement officials to not be in the operations center and be out doing other mission-essential requirements," Declan Lynch, head of strategy and growth, Force Protection, at Anduril said.Lynch said the tech tested at Miramar will translate to protect our service members on the battlefield."I'm really excited about taking the same technology and working with war-fighters in combat and contested environments ... As a former Marine and working with a team full of Marines, we're just excited to stay connected to the Marine Corps mission," says Lynch. The mission, "to win our Nation’s battles swiftly and aggressively in times of crisis." 2666

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego security experts advise vigilance in the wake of the U.S. attack on Iran General Qassem Suleimani.Former Marine Pilot Ed Rush says Iran's options are limited when it comes to retaliation - but its two options appear to be a cyber attack or a terrorist attack. "We've protected ourselves pretty well at home here from terror," Rush said, noting he expects any attack to be abroad on a U.S. interest or embassy. San Diego Police say they have received no credible threat and have not increased patrols. RELATED: San Diego military bases tighten security amid rising tensions with IranStill, it's important to remain aware in San Diego, said aviation security expert Glen Winn. He noted San Diego is home to major military bases and is a magnet for tourism. Winn said visitors to attractions can expect more screeners when they go inside. "The most you can do is have people that are observing who is entering," Winn said. "Let's say somebody shows up in our kind of weather with a very heavy topcoat on or something like that - that's always an example used - why are you wearing a topcoat coming into the safari park and it's 75 degrees outside?" Winn also noted a wide range of agencies run frequent drills to prepare for any attack. RELATED: US, Iran relations reaching boiling point after airstrike that killed Iranian military leaderAs for cyber attacks, James Linlor, who has managed cyber security programs for the navy, said he expects the intensity and frequency of attempted attacks to increase. But he noted the U.S. is fending off cyber attacks almost constantly. "This is going on all the time," he said. "There are always other governments attempting to access infrastructure in the U.S."Linlor says the attacks are likely to target large scale systems, and not individuals. 1825

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Student loan debt is crippling tens of millions of people, more than credit card debt and auto loans. Now some companies are helping their workers tackle the mounting debt, offering student loan assistance as a benefit.Fidelity Investments is one company leading the way with its Step Ahead Student Loan Assistance program. “We look at our jobs day-to-day and we try and figure out how we can help people make the right financial decisions in their lives and it was something holding back some of our folks here at Fidelity," said Jared Roethlisberger, a Fidelity Branch Manager in Mission Valley. "They couldn’t save for retirement or they were working on saving for that home, and this allows us, Fidelity, to help those associates be able to take a little bit more home in their pocket."Employees who’ve been with the company for at least six months are eligible for ,000 a year toward their student loans up to ,000.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Bill would help employers aid employees in paying off student loansFidelity started offering the benefit in 2016 and more than 9,300 employees have saved over million in principal and interest. The company says employees are able to pay off their loans five years sooner and lifetime costs were reduced by about ,000.Roethlisberger says it's not only a benefit to employees but to the company, helping with recruitment and retention of employees. “I also think it just makes folks happier, we see better retention of employees and happier employees," said Roethlisberger.RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Millions available for local studentsNow the company is helping other businesses offer the benefit to employees, launching the Student Debt Employer Contribution benefit in 2018. According to data from Fidelity's website, 86 percent of young people would commit to their employer for five years if they helped pay off their student loans. More than 55 companies are now making plans to offer the program and there are 10,000 active participants. Some companies are also getting creative, like providing an option to transfer carry-over paid time off (PTO) into a payment against student debt.Despite Fidelity's success, few businesses overall are offering this benefit. A 2018 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management found only 4 percent of organizations offered financial aid to help employees repay student loans, the same as in 2017. RELATED: This university is offering free tuition to families that bring in less than 0KSome lawmakers hope to change that, proposing a bill which would allow employers to give tax-free student loan assistance. Borrowers can also consider student loan refinancing; combining your existing federal student loans and private student loans into a single, new student loan with a lower interest rate.Make Lemonade, a free personal finance website, has created a list of their highest-rated refinance student loans and student loan consolidation options. 2997
