BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — An Oklahoma woman's post on social media is going viral after she said she took her dog to a PetSmart store to get groomed only to learn it suffered a broken jaw."I'm very emotional," Tania Lara, the owner of the dog, said. "I feel scared."Lara says in her Facebook post that about an hour after she dropped off her dog Susie to get groomed at PetSmart on Hillside Drive in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, she received a phone call from a store employee who said the dog was not doing well."Something really bad was going on," Lara said. The dog owner said when she arrived at the store, the dog was bleeding and was unable to close her mouth. "She was in a lot of pain," Lara said. "She was touching her face and she was crying."The woman said she was told employees attempted to take Susie to the in-store vet, but the vet was busy. She adds they also told her Susie had dental problems.Lara said she immediately took her dog to the veterinarian, who said the dog's jaw had been broken in two places."She [had] to be hospitalized during the weekend," Lara said. "She has a feeding tube in."The dog underwent surgery on Monday. Black Lives Matter activists are holding their first Black National Convention Friday, a virtual event that will adopt a political agenda calling for slavery reparations, universal basic income, environmental justice and legislation that entirely re-imagines criminal justice reform.The gathering follows Democratic and Republican party conventions that laid out starkly different visions for America. It also comes on the heels of yet another shooting by a white police officer of a Black man — 29-year-old Jacob Blake — in Kenosha, Wisconsin, that sparked days of protests, unrest and violence.And it comes on the same day as a commemoration of the 1963 March on Washington, where the families of an ever-growing list of police and vigilante violence victims will appear with civil rights leaders.Friday’s live-stream broadcast will include policy proposals on such issues as voter suppression, reproductive rights, inequality in public education, housing insecurity and inter-communal violence, according to its agenda, shared exclusively with The Associated Press.“These are absolutely public policies that the Democratic Party, state and local officials, or anyone who is looking to serve Black people can take up now,” said Jessica Byrd, who leads the Electoral Justice Project of the Movement for Black Lives, a coalition of more than 150 Black groups organizing the event.In 2016, the coalition released its “Vision for Black Lives” policy platform which included early proposals for defunding police. BUFFALO, N.Y. - At a house in Buffalo, you'll find a resource to help neighbors in need."I think Buffalo really has the chance and ability to want to really come together and put some positivity into the air right now you know?" said Jessie Reardon.Reardon is the woman behind the Buffalo Community Fridge. She's also a registered nurse at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.The fridge is for anyone who needs fresh produce, baby food, or even a pre-packaged meal. She got all the logistics together starting in July and put the fridge out last week.Reardon said the fridge was a donation from a friend. Since then, a few others have offered to find fridges for the effort."The ultimate goal is to for there to be refrigerators all over the city, in every neighborhood, all over. Spreading mutual aid giving food to people that need it," said Reardon.It's a resource critical to Buffalo's east side, which is considered a food desert."It's hard to get fresh fruit and the natural resources that our families need for their children, so they have the proper nutrition," said Pastor Dwayne Jones, with Mt. Aaron Missionary Baptist Church.Pastor Jones, an advocate for getting produce to food deserts, said there's only one supermarket on the east side.He's been working on a local, state, and federal level to get more supermarkets to that area."We need a supermarket down on this part of the east side," he said. "Everybody needs an apple, fresh milk, everybody needs fresh milk, fresh produce."Right now, Reardon wants other people to get encouraged to host a refrigerator themselves, and she is more than willing to help them get started."Anyone can do this, absolutely. BEECH GROVE, Ind. — A man has been arrested after he recorded himself dumping a bag of flour onto the head of a 68-year-old woman at a Beech Grove, Indiana Walmart on Wednesday. An off-duty IMPD officer working at the Walmart on Emerson Avenue just after 10 a.m. when he was informed of the incident. The 68-year-old woman was shopping in the store when a man she didn't know snuck up behind her and dumped an entire bag of flour on her head. The suspect, Phillip Weaver, 22, recorded the incident on Facebook Live and shared it on his social media page. Weaver was arrested Thursday afternoon. He's been preliminarily charged with battery, theft, theft of a firearm and criminal mischief in reference to that incident. Final charges will be determined by the Marion County Prosecutor's office. The incident remains under investigation.  A quick view at Weaver's social media pages shows that he regularly records himself doing what he calls "pranks" to other people in public places and shares them with his followers. (AP) — A Georgia judge has denied bond for the white father and son charged with murder in the February slaying of Ahmaud Arbery.Superior Court Judge Timothy Walmsley said Friday that he's concerned Gregory McMichael and his adult son, Travis McMichael, took the law into their own hands and endangered neighbors when they pursued the 25-year-old Black man with guns and shot him in a residential street in February.Defense attorneys say the McMichaels had reason to suspect Arbery was a burglar and Travis McMichael was defending himself when he shot Arbery in the port city of Brunswick.During a hearing Thursday, prosecutors said Travis McMichael had previously used racial slurs in text messages and on social media.Prosecutors asked the suspect’s friend, Zachary Langford, on the witness stand about a text in which McMichael used a slur for Black people. At first, he said he didn’t recall receiving the message, but after reviewing a transcript of the exchange, he said “He was referring to a raccoon, I believe,” The Associated Press reports.Attorneys for the McMichaels have died any racist motives in the shooting.The McMichaels were not arrested until May, when the Georgia Bureau of Investigation stepped and charged them with murder and aggravated assault.There was mounting public pressure for justice in the case after video was released of the deadly incident. The case gained attention nationwide during the summer’s protests over racial injustice.The man who filmed the video, William Bryan, was also later arrested and charged with murder and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment, according to The New York Times.In June, The Times says a grand jury returned an indictment with nine counts against all three men. Those charges include malice murder, four counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, false imprisonment and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment. 1934
