Mondelez International, the parent company of Nabisco, has redesigned its packaging of "Barnum's Animals" crackers after being pressured by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.The group called for the redesign by Mondelez because it protests the use of animals in circuses, and the animal crackers boxes showed animals in cages, the Associated Press reports.The crackers were once named for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus, but it folded for good after 146 years. (KGTV) - After five years of delays and construction, the Plunge Pool in Mission Beach is scheduled to re-open on June 1."There was a lot of I's to dot and T's to cross with this thing, so we've taken our time," explains Belmont Park General Manager Steve Thomas. "We've invested the capital to make sure that things are where we want them to be. It feels good to be involved in a project like that."In addition to rebuilding the pool, the new Plunge will include a state of the art fitness center, run by Fit Athletic Club.The pool, which opened in 1925, closed in 2014 in dire need of repairs. That process didn't begin until January of 2017 because of issues with the Coastal Commission and other government entities.Throughout construction, people in Mission Beach have been wondering when it will reopen while reminiscing of their time spent in the old Plunge."Our kids, we used to bring them here when they were little," says Sharon Delgadillo. She and her husband Henry walk by the Plunge while they exercise in Mission Beach and have stopped frequently to check on its progress. "It will be awesome that another generation can enjoy this pool too.""It's a piece of our history," says Mission Beach Town Council President Matthew Gardner. He says the management from Belmont Park and the Fit Athletic Club has done an excellent job at providing updates to the council at their monthly meetings. He was thrilled to hear they have an opening date set for June 1st."You better believe I'll be first in line to get a membership for the pool," says Gardner.The Fit is already selling memberships to the Club, which will include pool access. A manager says they're offering a /month special through the end of March.Meanwhile, Belmont Park management says the pool will have its own membership that people can buy if they don't want the full athletic club experience. Belmont Park is still working out the price points for that.Business owners around Mission Beach and Belmont Park also feel the pool will be a catalyst for more economic growth in the area. (WTVF) — Pregnant women in the healthcare industry are wondering if they should get the COVID-19 vaccine since it's available to them following the emergency use authorization.At Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Dr. Jennifer Thompson, an associate professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, said the risks associated with getting COVID-19 while pregnant are far worse than the risks associated with the vaccine. Thompson said, "They have increased risk of hospitalization, need for ICU, mechanical ventilation, and a slight increase risk in death compared to non-pregnant patients." She said her recommendation pertains to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for her patients who are pregnant, or trying to get pregnant. “So because of that increased risk, women who are pregnant are considered a higher risk group, and so therefore many of our organizations the CDC, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine recommend that the COVID-19 vaccine should not be withheld from pregnant individuals who meet criteria for vaccination based on their recommended priority group,” Thompson said.Dr. Thomspon practices what she preaches. "I actually received my vaccine on Friday, so I’m not concerned at this point about the long-term safety data," Thompson said. She noted that she’s had no side effects yet.While pregnant women were excluded from the trials, some women joined not knowing they were pregnant. Dr. Thompson said they’ve been following those cases closely. "These numbers are really small, but we have not seen significant adverse reactions both from a pregnancy standpoint or a fetal standpoint," Thompson said.Unfortunately, there's a lot of misinformation out there. There was an article circulating online which said the vaccine could cause infertility. Dr. Thompson said there’s no evidence to support that. "There’s some concern that the spike protein has a similar genetic makeup to one of the proteins in the placenta, however that similarity is less than 1%, and infertility has not been found from any of the scientific data," Thompson said. In addition, the COVID-19 vaccine is believed to be safe for women who are breast-feeding. Live vaccines are not recommended for pregnant women, but the COVID-19 vaccine is not live. “It’s an mRNA vaccine which is broken down by the body, and not incorporated into your DNA at all,” Thompson said, “Fetal risks are thought to be low due to the fact that the mRNA is broken down by your circulation and pre-clinical studies have been very reassuring.”If you have questions, talk to your doctor.
