The World Health Organization listed physical inactivity and unhealthy diets as major risk factors to diabetes, cancer and heart disease in its 2019 Global Threats Report. However, obesity is more complex than calories and exercise.Those who know the disease best are working to change the perception of possible solutions. Jeanine Sherman's first thought on weight loss surgery was similar to a common perception: it's the easy way out or a last-resort method to lose weight. “And I thought, ‘really? Bariatric surgery? Am I to that point?’” she says. At 5-foot-5-inches tall and around 230 pounds, Sherman’s primary care doctor told her she was a candidate when she asked about weight loss medication. At the time, Sherman had a very high BMI but no other weight-related health issues. For three years, Sherman researched ways she could avoid surgery. “If I copy this lifestyle, live the lifestyle of a bariatric patient and if I learned their daily eating habits, their exercise habits, well then I can lose the weight and not have bariatric surgery,” she recalls thinking. After gaining 30 additional pounds, Sherman decided surgery was best. “I tell anybody that I talk to that, that day is one of the top ten days of my life,” she says. Maintaining her weight around 143 pounds now, Sherman found her voice through the hashtag #iamabariatricpatient. “Many patients were ashamed to talk about the surgery and didn’t want to share that they had surgery with friends or family,” Sherman says. Sherman says stigmatizing someone because of their weight will typically only cause them to gain weight, not lose it. The Obesity Action Coalition tries to break the stigma with support. The most popular museums in Washington, D.C. are now closed until a deal can be reached to end the government shutdown. Tourist Staci Jones flew to D.C. from Texas to see the African American Museum, the Smithsonian's newest and most popular museum. “It is frustrating that the one thing I wanted to do, I’m not gonna be able to do before I leave,” Jones says. Adonai Mahoungou came to D.C. from Mississippi and also wanted to see the museum.“I was really disappointed because I was getting ready to go to museums, have some fun,” says Mahoungou. “And to see that because of a government shutdown, disappointing, because I was ready! I was excited! Dang.” In addition to all Smithsonian museums being closed, the National Zoo is also closed, including the zoo's popular giant panda web cam. Outside of D.C., the shutdown is forcing some national parks to close because of health and safety concerns. Understaffed parks cannot keep up with overflowing toilets and trash cans. “It was kind of smelling bad down there, and I don't know how it's affecting the park with human waste and everything,” says Yosemite National Park visitor Katie Kensok. As more people start to feel the pain from the shutdown, President Trump and new Congress now face more pressure to come up with a solution. “Being from Texas, I don't work for the government. I didn't think it would affect me that much, but now, I’m starting to see, yeah, it does affect people who don't work for the government in other ways,” says Jones. “I just wish they would come together.” 1557

The government shutdown is flying into dangerous territory, according to several aviation leaders. The largest pilot union says the shutdown "is adversely affecting the safety, security and efficiency of our national airspace system." The National Air Traffic Controllers Association is also warning the shutdown is rapidly eliminating safety layers "in a system that has no room for error." “We're always worried about any kind of hiccup in the system,” says James Marinitti, with the association. “We're doing this interview. We can do a second take. We can do a third take. But for air traffic controllers, you only get one take. They work in a mistake-free environment, where we are expected to be right 100 percent of the time.” Right now, 3,000 support staff have been told not to come to work, which means fewer safety inspectors. That could lead to delay in repairing equipment, like a broken light on the runway that helps guide pilots and other equipment repairs.“Radar, preventative maintenance, these types of things that will get delayed as the shutdown continues, because the workers are not there to keep the system healthy,” Marinitti says. The shutdown is hitting air traffic controllers especially hard because of a 30-year low staffing shortage. They're not only understaffed, but they’re also currently working without pay and it's unknown when they'll get their next check. “The bills haven't come, yet, to be a problem, but we know that's there in the back of our heads,” says air traffic controller Alex Navarro. “And as the day goes on and the shutdown, it's getting more pronounced, so we're worried about it. It's just trying to fight back the doubt and the worry of not getting that paycheck.” The shutdown, causing stress as aviation workers try to navigate through turbulent times on and off the job. 1844

Twice a week at CrossFit Inferno on California’s Central Coast, mothers go through an hour-long high-intensity workout that’s designed by moms for moms. “So, today we have mom bods and WODs,” said exercise instructor Kassi Heidemann. WODs is an acronym for “workout of the day.” “I have a 5-year-old boy and he’s the light of my life but he’s also a lot of work,” Heidemann said. Heidemann is a big believer that athletics can help improve emotions – especially for postpartum moms. “When my little guy was super little there was a lot of stress,” she said. “So, you can tell they’re wound up, pent up, not aggression just stress in new moms.” That stress can be somewhat relieved with these meatgrinder workouts. “It helps my sanity a lot because I’m with these two all the time,” said new mom Elaine. Elaine says she finds her peace and also her pulse racing during the workouts. The mother of two says there’s no shaming at the gym – it’s more celebrating. “Coming here you get to talk to other moms and just get out and be social and exercise so it helps with self-esteem, too,” she said. But doing deadlifts and squat presses for time – how much is too much too soon? “Exercising is very important for all people, especially mothers,” said Terry Krause, MD of UCHealth. Krause says typically after childbirth mothers should start slow and wait at least six weeks before any rigorous activity. “When you’ve been pregnant for a while and delivered a baby, your body is not the same as it was previously,” she said. “So, you can’t necessarily jump right back into a triathlon.” A mother herself, Krause says a mom’s health is paramount for the health of the entire family. “Not only do you need to be healthy because you’re a person and you matter but your baby needs a mom your baby needs a mom who feels good about being a parent,” she said. As the workout was coming to an end at CrossFit Inferno, Heidemann said the more moms workout, the more they change both physically and emotionally. “You see just their face, you see the way they carry themselves,” she said. “They walk around just so much more confident.” And by embracing their own health, Heidemann says these moms are role models.“Their kids actually see and their kids will actually know this is my mom,” she said. “She’s strong. She’s confident. And she takes care of me.” 2361
