BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- The bodies of all eight Chinese police officers buried under a collapsed building in the Haiti quake had been found as of early Sunday morning Beijing time, the Ministry of Public Security said.     The first body was found at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 16 Beijing time after more than 80 hours of search and rescue work, and the other seven were retrieved from 10:42 p.m. to 3:56 a.m. Jan. 17 under the joint efforts of the Chinese rescue team, the Chinese peacekeeping force in Haiti and several foreign rescue teams, the ministry's emergency response work team announced Sunday. BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's Education Ministry on Sunday warned students considering studying overseas against Australian schools run by the GEOS group after more than 40 Chinese students were left stranded with the group's collapse.More than 2,300 students in GEOS group schools across Australia were affected after the college closures. The schools were scattered across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Cairns.GEOS is a Japanese company which owns hundreds of colleges around the world. The GEOS group has run out of money for its Australian colleges,according to Australian media reports.Chinese embassies and consulates in Australia are negotiating with local authorities to settle the issue to safeguard students' legitimate rights.The Education Ministry has drawn up a recommendation list of nearly 15,000 schools in 33 countries worldwide on its website. The recommended schools are relatively trustworthy and reliable.Australia has been a preferred destination for overseas education for Indian and Chinese students.The Australian Bureau of Statistics said the number of Chinese student enrollments was 146,000 by June 2009, up an average annual 16 percent over the past six years.

HAIKOU, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Government plans to make China's southern island province of Hainan an international tourist resort have cut the supply of housing as owners and developers hold out for huge profits.More than 200 property buyers had arrived everyday since the end of last year when the government unveiled plans to turn the tropical island into a top international destination by 2020, said Li Zhuo, a salesman with Rongyu Project in Haikou, the provincial capital.Prices were rising by about 1,000 yuan (164 U.S. dollars) per square meter each day on some properties and properties that had been selling for 15,000 yuan a square meter at the beginning of the year were now asking20,000 yuan, he said.The Shanhuwan real estate project in Haikou had sold 600 of its 643 apartments in two weeks despite prices jumping almost 50 percent, said salesgirl Min Xia.In the popular tourist destination of Sanya, the average price of Shanyuhu project had soared from 13,000 yuan a square meter in November, to 28,000 yuan as of Thursday, and was almost sold out.The tourism promotion blueprint, which was officially announced on Jan. 4 and is expected to be approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, drew real estate developers and investors from home and abroad, driving up the property market to fever and causing property bubble fears."Many home developers and owners suspended sales, expecting higher prices and profits," said Liu Haiyi, assistant general manager of Hainan Jintai Real Estate Development Co., Ltd.In an effort to clamp down on potential speculation, the provincial government on Jan. 15 suspended the leasing of land and approval of projects, which worsened speculation concerns.The suspension was aimed at cooling the overheated sector, but it may have led to a second wave of price hikes, said a property agent surnamed Wu."Sufficient housing and land resources could be provided to fulfill demands of the market and the tourism promotional campaign," Wei Liucheng, secretary of Hainan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, said Tuesday."We will blacklist real estate developers who seriously disturb the property market order and not approve any new land for them," he said.Official statistics show 58,489 commercial homes, totaling almost 6 million square meters, were on the market in Hainan's major cities as of Monday.In the first half of 2009, Hainan had approved development of 3,164.7 hectares of land, including 1,522.65 hectares already under construction, according to the provincial administration of land, environment and resources.Wei said homes for local residents were a priority. The authorities should conduct comprehensive supervision campaigns and work out plans for land approval for residential purposes. BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Following several reports of melamine-tainted milk products resurfacing, Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Tuesday vowed a new nationwide campaign in 2010 to ensure food safety."Food is essential, and safety should be a top priority for food. Food safety is closely related to people's life and health and economic development and social harmony," Li said at the first plenary meeting of the recently-established food safety commission under the State Council.According to Li, this year's campaign will focus on the prominent issues of food additives, edible farm products, food production processing, food circulation and import and export, livestock slaughter, the catering industry and health supplements industry, among others."We should understand the foundation for the country's food safety is still weak and the situation is grave," Li said. Melamine-contaminated milk products killed at least six children in 2008 and sickened 300,000.Li stressed responsibility of food producers and vendors while calling on various government departments to strengthen supervision and guidance of these companies.He urged improvement in food safety standards and the food system production check-ups, risk evaluation, accident prevention and emergency response.Li vowed to "thoroughly" investigate the latest milk scandal, destroy all tainted products and severely punish those responsible.Two managers from a dairy company and a milk powder dealer in northwestern Shaanxi Province were arrested on charges of manufacturing and selling food that does not meet hygiene standards, local police said earlier this month.Li urged the strengthening of law enforcement by increasing the frequency of inspection and expanding the supervision to clear up potential troubles and ensure people spend a happy and peaceful Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 14 this year.

BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Beijing's per capita gross domestic product exceeded 10,000 U.S. dollars for the first time last year after a strong economic recovery, a local statistics official said Thursday.The GDP in the Chinese capital grew 10.1 percent to 1.187 trillion yuan (137.8 billion U.S. dollars) in 2009, according to the Beijing Bureau of Statistics.The per capita GDP was 68,788 yuan (10,070 U.S. dollars) as the city had 17.55 million permanent residents at the end of 2009."The breakthrough is a milestone for Beijing," said Yu Xiuqin, the bureau's deputy director. "According to the standards of the World Bank, Beijing has become a moderately well-off city."According to the World Bank, a country or region should be recognized as moderately well-off when its per capita GDP exceeds 10,000 U.S. dollars, the official explained.The service industry contributed to 75 percent of Beijing's GDP and its urbanization rate had reached 85 percent, she said."The Beijing government will take further measures to boost the living standards and social welfare of the rural population to bridge the gap between urban and rural areas," Yu said.
