(KGTV) - Community leaders in Julian plan to turn a vacant lot into a Town Square, creating a new focal point for the city."I hope it becomes the center of our town," says Kim Simas, the Treasurer of the Julian Community Heritage Foundation.They're working to raise money for the project, which they think will cost around million. Right now, the lot is vacant, covered with weeds and surrounded by a dilapidated fence."It's a bit of an eyesore," says Simas.In the past, the lot had been the home of the community market. It was also a Chevron gas station.That gas station was found to be leaking gasoline into the community water supply in the 1980s and was subsequently shut down.Just a few years ago, the County cleared the site for development. A family in San Clemente owns the lot, and members of the Foundation say they're ready to sell it and support the idea of building a Town Square on the parcel."It's a space I think we can do more with," says Abdel. "It's a space that can benefit the community in so many ways."The Foundation hopes a new town square will serve as a meeting place for community events. They also hope it will encourage tourists to spend more time in Julian."They're going to come up here for the apple picking. They're going to come up here for the pies and the snow. This gives them another area to relax and enjoy the space rather than getting in their car and leaving," says Simas.The project already has the support of the County Board of Supervisors. Organizers hope the board will award the project money from the Park Land Dedication Ordinance. The Julian Planning Group and the Julian Architectural Review Board have also approved the project.Now, the Foundation hopes community members and tourists will chip in to cover the rest of the cost.They've set up a GoFundMe page for donation. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — More and more women are seeking help getting pregnant. With that help has come an increase in the number of women freezing eggs and embryos.The Centers for Disease Control recently released preliminary numbers for 2016, the latest data available for assisted reproductive technology, or ART, because it takes two years to finalize births and verify data.The data was collected from 463 reporting clinics in the US.There were 76,930 babies born in 2016 as a result of fertility treatments. About 11,000 of those were sets of twins.Of the 263,577 ART cycles (the two-week process of stimulating egg production with the intent to transfer embryos), 65,840 were done so to freeze all resulting eggs or embryos for future pregnancy attempts.The CDC points out the use of assisted reproductive technology is relatively rare, “its use has doubled over the past decade” resulting in 1.7 percent of all infants born in the United States every year are conceived using ART.One of the reporting clinics is Midwest Reproductive Center in Olathe, Kansas.Dr. Dan Gehlbach started the practice in 2004 and has been a reproductive endocrinologist for 25 years. He says he’s moved to almost exclusively freezing all embryos.“Once the data was clear that transferring an embryo soon after egg retrieval was not the optimum time for a transfer, and we could freeze an embryo and allow the uterus to recover from all the hormonal changes that had occurred, and then place the woman on a much lower dose of hormones that just prepare her uterus for an embryo to attach…then we were able to show an improvement in pregnancy rates by transferring a single embryo that had been frozen and thawed verses where we used to transfer two fresh embryos almost routinely,” said Dr. Gehlbach.Gehlbach says this is not only increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy, it is also lowering the risk of twins or triplets. He’s now been following this plan for three years at his clinic.The doctor said advances in medicine may also keep costs down. If a couple can commit to even one round of in-vitro fertilization, fertility doctors can freeze multiple eggs or embryos so the future costs are for thawing and implantation, verses more rounds of IVF.An IVF cycle typically runs ,000 to ,000 when all costs are considered. If no embryos are frozen, the full IVF cycle must be repeated for another attempt.If embryos are frozen after one IVF cycle, thawing an already frozen embryo and implanting it in a woman’s uterus is significantly cheaper than a full IVF cycle. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Schlitterbahn Waterpark co-owner Jeff Henry has been arrested on charges related to the death of 10-year-old Caleb Schwab. Henry is charged with murder, 12 counts of aggravated battery and five counts of aggravated child endangerment.Henry was taken into custody in Texas and is currently being held by the U.S. Marshal Service.In a statement Monday afternoon, the company said it was not surprised at the charges against Henry."We as a company and as a family will fight these allegations and have confidence that once the facts are presented it will be clear that what happened on the ride was an unforeseeable accident," the statement read.Last week, several criminal charges were filed against Tyler A. Miles, a former assistant park manager, and the company itself. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One of the men indicted for the death of 10-year-old boy on a water slide in 2016 is also facing a bankruptcy in Texas.Jeff Henry, the co-owner of Schlitterbahn water parks in Kansas City, Kansas and Corpus Christi, Texas is scheduled to appear in a Kansas City, Kansas, courtroom next week.The Corpus Christi location is part of an ongoing bankruptcy.According to court records, Jeff Henry and his brother Gary Henry were behind a company called Upper Padre Partners (UPP).Those same records show UPP had more than million in unexplained cost overruns for the Corpus Christi water park.That figure is more than double what it was expected to cost to build the complex, which also includes a nine-hole golf course.Companies the Henrys borrowed money from accuse them of mismanagement and misappropriation of funds.Right now, a court-appointed trustee runs Upper Padre Partners, and submits monthly financial reports to the court.The newest report, for February, was submitted last week.Court records show a company called Axys loaned UPP million in February 2015.By November 2016, three months after 10-year-old Caleb Schwab was killed while riding a slide in the Kansas City park, that million was in default.Axys foreclosed on a piece of property next to the Corpus Christi water park and is attempting to sell it to get some of its money back.An attorney for Axys said UPP still owes the company millions of dollars.Court records show UPP also owes International Bank of Commerce more than million.That bank has put claims known as liens on both the water park and the golf course. 1662

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A man allegedly verbally and physically assaulted a Muslim student at Metropolitan Community College in Kansas City in an incident the FBI is describing as a potential hate crime.The student was walking in a stairwell in the Humanities Building on the campus around 3 p.m. on April 3. The student said she was walking down the stairway when an unknown male voice uttered a derogatory statement toward the woman.When the woman turned around, she said the suspect struck her in the face, causing her to fall down the stairs.The woman reported the incident to campus police, who notified the FBI.In a statement, a Metropolitan Community College spokeswoman says the incident happened on a day that was part of an international campaign to "scare and encourage violence against Muslims."The FBI said Wednesday it’s offering a reward of up to ,000 leading to the arrest of the suspect in the attack.Anyone with information can call the FBI at (816) 512-8200 or the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-8477. 1036
