BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The Supreme People's Court (SPC) of China on Tuesday urged courts across the country to accept scrutiny by the press and general public.The courts must constantly listen to the public so they can carry out their work in a better way, Shen Deyong, executive vice president of the SPC, told a national conference on the publicity work of courts.After hailing achievements of the courts in providing information to the public, Shen said some courts did not pay enough attention to public opinion."The public are paying more attention to court work, their expectations are growing. They want to know more, participate more and supervise more," he said.Shen urged courts to disclose information on major issues in a timely fashion, so as to avoid public suspicion and damage to judicial authority.The Supreme People's Court will train spokespeople and publicity officials of courts nationwide in the second half of the year.

BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Police authorities in Beijing launched a microblog, blogs and a podcast on Sunday in the latest move in its public relations campaign.This came about half a month after police in the Chinese capital set up a public relations office to enhance transparency and interaction with residents.The Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau officially launched its new media services at the news portals sina.com, sohu.com and 163.com and video-sharing site ku6.com after a three-day trial.The services, branded as "Safe Beijing", offer a new communication channel between police and the general public. Microblogs, for example, have become a quick and popular source of news and information for increasingly more Chinese citizens.Fu Zhenghua, head of the bureau, said last month that law enforcement activities could easily be hot topics in the media and among the public in this highly open and transparent Internet era."With the aid of modern technology, we hope to communicate with residents and vulnerable groups with frankness and sincerity, as well as promote social justice," said Fu.In the first microblog post, the bureau pledged to offer the latest police affairs news, anti-fraud tips and stories of model community police.The bureau has posted dozens of practical anti-fraud and anti-theft tips and police affairs news, including training programs for special police and stories about model police officers serving their first day on the police force.More than 17,600 people logged onto the microblog service on Sunday and some posts received hundreds of comments.Most welcomed the services, saying it can bridge the gap between police and average citizens and change the traditionally mysterious and superior image of police officers."This is really a good thing. BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- A total of 600 soldiers with the Lanzhou Military Area Command have arrived at mudslides-devastated Zhouqu county in northwest China's Gansu Province, and started relief work.Three other detachments consisting of more than 1,700 soldiers with the command as well as a 180-member medical team are on their way to the affected areas.Six helicopters, including four from the Lanzhou command and two from the Xinjiang Military Area Command, have also departed for the affected areas.China's armed police have also sent 2,100 members to help with the relief work, with 740 of them having arrived at the scene.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 9 (Xinhua)-- Premier Wen Jiabao has urged rescuers to race against time to search survivors after catastrophic mudslides hit a northwest China county and left nearly 1,300 people missing Sunday.At least 127 people have been confirmed dead and 1,294 others were reported missing in rain-triggered mudslides in Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu Province, early Sunday morning."For those who were buried under the debris, now it's the most crucial time to save their lives," Wen stressed during a meeting held at the county government late Sunday night.He said the search and rescue work must not be halted as long as the possibility for finding survivors still exists.He instructed the rescuers to locate places where most people were buried or trapped and to clean the sludge as soon as possible.Wen also demanded that traffic, power supply and telecommunication in the county should be resumed as soon as possible."And people who have been evacuated should be taken good care of," Wen stressed.
