BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- China has vowed to continue to develop its human rights dialogue with Norway after the two nations concluded their 13th annual Roundtable on Human Rights and the Rule of Law here Friday.Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin briefed Norwegian representatives on Chinese achievements in improving people's livelihoods, reinforcing democracy, and constructing legal systems.The human rights roundtable between China and Norway is a model for countries with different social systems and from different civilizations to conduct equal and friendly dialogue, Liu said.China hopes to strengthen dialogue and exchange with other countries on human rights issues on the basis of equality and mutual respect to increase understanding, expand agreement and jointly promote the healthy development of human rights internationally.Norwegian Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Gry Larsen spoke highly of China's remarkable achievements with human rights, saying the two nations have conducted stable and effective cooperation in the field of human rights.The Norway-China roundtable has served as a helpful platform for the two nations to discuss human rights issues and is conducive to the growth of bilateral ties, he said.Larsen said Norway will work with China to further promote the roundtable.During the two-day roundtable, nearly 70 officials and scholars from the two sides exchanged views on the rights of workers, prisoners and minorities.Liu and Larsen also discussed human rights, covering such topics as freedom of speech, the rights of minorities and the role of non-governmental organizations.China and Norway started discussing human rights issues in an informal setting in 1993. In 1997 the first formal Roundtable on Human Rights and the Rule of Law was held.

CANBERRA, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Prime Minister Michael Somare on Thursday met with Liu Jieyi, vice minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.Liu, who was leading a CPC friendship delegation, said the relationship between China and Papua New Guinea exemplifies China's friendly cooperation with Pacific nations.China appreciates Papua New Guinea's adherence to the one-China policy, and would like to make joint efforts with the country to deepen their exchanges and cooperation in all fields, Liu said.He said China also would like to fully unleash the potential of economic and trade cooperation, and push for sound and stable development of bilateral ties between the two countries.The CPC would like to strengthen communications with Papua New Guinea's ruling National Alliance in order to learn from each other and enhance political mutual trust, Liu said.Somare said his country regards China as an important development partner, and he is satisfied with development of their bilateral ties.

  

NANNING, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has urged that more efforts be implemented to fight floods, while reassuring those residents living in areas ravaged by flooding and inspecting flood damage, during his visit to Wuzhou city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which has been plagued by torrential rains.During the two-day visit ending Sunday, Wen checked on water levels and river banks in Wuzhou, and visited households in mountainous areas, urban downtowns and rural areas, pledging the government would use all means to prevent and fight flooding.Further, Wen called on local authorities to closely monitor weather changes and strengthen forecasting and warning systems to ensure an advanced emergency response.Further, more efforts were demanded to prevent damages from floods and landslides, Wen said. He highlighted the importance of relief work in schools, mines, railways and roads, as well as tourism sites.Wen required immediate reports and instant responses on risks of dam and reservoir breaks from local officials. More efforts should be taken to safeguard public safety, he added.Also, more relief funds and materials were needed to ensure food, clothing, accommodations, drinking water and health care are delivered to flood victims, Wen said.As of Sunday morning, mud flows and floods triggered by the intense rainstorms that began in mid-June had left 132 people dead and 86 missing in south China's nine provinces and regions, including Guangxi, Fujian, and Jiangxi, according to the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.More than 10 million people have been affected by severe floods, which has accounted for economic losses of 14.5 billion yuan (2.1 billion U.S. dollars), officials noted.
