BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator, Wu Bangguo, met with his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Shahid in Beijing Monday and called for closer relations between the two nations and the two parliaments.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, said the growth of bilateral relations in recent years had yielded substantial benefits for the two peoples.Wu said China valued ties with the Maldives and was willing to maintain friendly exchanges and cooperation at all levels in an effort to expand political mutual trust and economic and trade cooperation in fields such as fisheries, tourism, and infrastructure construction.China would encourage Chinese companies to further participate in the Maldives' national construction and more Chinese tourists to visit the country, Wu said.Wu voiced his hope for stronger coordination between the two nations on international issues in order to build a relationship that would be a model for relations between big and small nations.Wu suggested the two legislatures promote dialogue and exchanges of views among members on successful experiences of national construction so as to inject new vitality to the development of bilateral relations.Shahid, speaker of the Maldivian People's Majlis, said the Maldivian people treasured the friendship of the Chinese people, and the rapid growth of the Chinese economy offered inspiration to developing countries, including the Maldives.Shahid pledged the Maldivian parliament would continue to play a constructive role in promoting bilateral relations.Shahid is leading a Maldivian parliamentary delegation to China at the invitation of Wu. The delegation arrived in China on Jan. 8. It is Shahid's first visit to China as the country's chief legislator.

BEIJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- China is trying to have more workers and farmers and fewer university graduates working as public servants because university graduates may have achieved academically, but farmers and workers often have grass-roots life experience.But achieving the goal has not been easy -- for the government, and workers and farmers as well.The annual National Public Servant Exam on Dec. 5 attracted more than 1 million candidates for 16,000 vacancies around the country, according to Nie Shengkui, a senior State Administration of Civil Service official.For the first time, it was stipulated that workers and farmers were preferred for some of the positions, in a move to make the exam more inclusive.As part of the pilot project, a total of 14 positions in grass-roots branches of central government departments at the county-level or below - including customs, taxation and rail police - in the regions of Guangdong, Sichuan, Xinjiang and Gansu were reserved for workers and farmers.Including more grass-roots workers and farmers in the exam is an improvement in the civil servant selection process, said Zhao Shuming, a professor of human resource management at Nanjing University in east China's Jiangsu Province.Compared with university graduates, workers and farmers are suited to some public service positions that involve work with grass-roots people, Zhao said.However, according to Nie, only 62 workers and farmers of the 171 qualified applicants took the exam."The competition in the public service exam is fierce, and I believe many workers and farmers lacked the confidence to take the exam," said Li Zhen, an official in Sichuan's provincial Department of Human Resources and Social Security.Li said that to his knowledge, there were no workers and farmers that took the exam in the province."Become a civil servant? BEIJING, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Civil Affairs on Tuesday sent more relief materials to southern regions that had been hit by icy weather, the ministry said in a statement.The batch of 35,000 quilts and 20,000 cotton coats were on their way to the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Chongqing Municipality and the provinces of Sichuan and Jiangxi.Since New Year's Day, freezing weather along with sleet has affected several southern regions, disrupting traffic and lives.Weather forecast said Tuesday freezing weather and sleet will continue in south China over the next three days.
