SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ten years ago this week, the stock market hit bottom. The country was in a crisis and the glory days of flipping houses in San Diego were a thing of the past. There are still people fixing and flipping houses, but if you want to make it in San Diego, you have to be a smart and savvy investor.“I continued the large pieces of tile all the way over, and I used as much glass as I could to open it up,” says Elijah Zuniga showing off the remodel of his master bathroom.Zuniga is not your average "flipper."“I’m just like the TV shows, except I don’t have a sidekick,” Zuniga says with a laugh.RELATED: San Diego among top hot housing markets for 2019, Zillow reportsA retired police officer and now a consultant, Zuniga buys about four homes a year. Not to live in, but rather as investments. He calls it his passion. And, he has a vision. Zuniga can walk into any home and see its potential. “You have to imagine the finished product in order to work through it,” adds Zuniga.Take the home he purchased in late November for example. It’s a 1974 single family home in San Carlos. The before and after photos are striking. Same with the bathrooms. Zuniga says the key is never cutting corners in the remodel. If you want to flip instead of flop, the investor must impress the buyer. And if you’re going to flip, that’s the other key. The house must move quickly. “We’re in the market of the moment, and we priced to sell,” says Lisa Becker. She’s also Zuniga’s agent and helps him find investment properties in San Diego. Together they only buy single-family homes in the mid-level range to reach a much larger pool of potential buyers. And, their method works. “So, this particular property, on the market less than a week, we had four offers,” says Becker.That’s right, four offers in less than a week. Flipping or not, time is of the essence for the seller. In November when Zuniga bought the house, Becker figured after renovations it could sell for 0,000. Fast forward to the end of February, with more homes on the market, suddenly the home is valued at 0,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The growing concerns over the coronavirus are impacting the daily routines of people across San Diego. Some businesses are changing the way they do things. CorePower Yoga has dozens of studios across San Diego. Monday morning, the company sent an email to its staff and clients outlining several precautions. Chloe Delehanti works out at the Mission Valley location."I've lived through SARS and Swine Flu, and I don't remember it being this serious of a concern, certainly never getting emails from my gym, or travel alerts, so it's definitely concerning," said Delehanti. The email stated the company is increasing its cleaning protocols and reducing the use of props and physical contact between teachers and clients. "Obviously, I really like adjustments and having that component in class, but I think it's a good idea to be as safe as possible, considering that it is a really growing concern, and there's a lot of new cases," said Delehanti.A salon in Hillcrest is also changing the way it does business. Stylists at Brightside Barber will now have the option of turning away customers who appear sick. "From here on out, not to feel like you can't turn someone away, if they are visibly sick with a fever, coughing," said Angelic Corona. She's been in the business ten years and said she's never seen anything like this. "I was relieved, cause you know, in customer service, it's kind of always been the customer is always right, but in this scenario it's health and safety for everyone," said Corona. A few doors down at Ralphs, shoppers, like Tyler Armstrong, were stocking up on cleaning supplies. "I think it's crazy, and I think a lot of people aren't taking it as serious as they need to, and I think we have something serious on our hands," said Armstrong. 1800
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The County of San Diego is preparing to step up enforcement efforts on businesses flouting public health orders, taking the reins from local agencies like the San Diego Police Department that have virtually stopped issuing tickets to violators.Despite thousands of complaints about violations to the county's 211 hotline, data from the San Diego Police Department shows the agency has issued 168 citations for health order violations since the pandemic shutdowns began. Ninety-one percent of those citations came in April.Since then, citations decreased to 12 in May, 3 in June, and zero in July. Violating the public health order is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a ,000 fine or six months in jail.“As these health orders continue to change it makes it really difficult for law enforcement,” said SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi.Since April, 211 received 9,382 complaints about public health order violations. During that span the county’s two largest law enforcement agencies, the Sheriff’s Department and SDPD, issued 312 citations combined.Lt. Takeuchi said you have to look back at the public health orders over time: in March, beaches and parks were closed and non-essential businesses were shut down. By April, it was easy to spot violators and expect they knew the rules.“It was a real black and white area,” he said.But then in late May, restrictions eased up, businesses started reopening, and Takeuchi said the regulations were less obvious. The mask ordinance, for example, only applies when an individual is within six feet of a non-household member. Determining whether groups of people walking the street are members of a household is highly impractical, he said.“When the county rules started to morph, we needed to understand them and we needed to make sure people understood them. So we always undertook an effort to educate first,” he said.Since then, the public health orders have been modified several times -- at least three times in July alone -- and Lt. Takeuchi said the department has had to embark on a new education campaign each time.“You've seen the San Diego Police Department really back off on enforcement because we think that the County Health Officer is really in a better position to ensure compliance of what they've deemed the egregious or the bad actors,” he said.This week, the county announced it would take on a more central role with enforcement, bringing on staff to more rapidly investigate cases like the one at The Gym in Pacific Beach, and opening a new compliance hotline.The new hotline and email system will replace the existing 211, so tipsters can speak directly with a county employee. 2664
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The county of San Diego is hoping to help curb the spread of COVID-19 among Latinos in the county with a new campaign announced on Tuesday.County numbers show Latinos are disproportionately affected by COVID-19. Out of the 24,000 confirmed cases in the county, 60% are Latino, but Latinos only make up 34% of the county's population.Out of the 487 coronavirus deaths in the county, 45% of those were Latinos, 38% were White and 12% were Asian.The new outreach campaign will consist of signage in Spanish, with reminders to wear facial coverings and maintain social distance. The county says they are also reaching out on TV, radio and online with resources for the Latino community.Although there is no exact reason for why Latinos are disproportionately affected by this pandemic, county leaders say reasons could include the fact that many Latinos are essential workers, live in multi-generational families and some have underlying health conditions.The county says it's goal is to make sure Latinos have the information they need to protect themselves and their families, encouraging them to get tested and participate if they are called by a contact tracer.To slow the spread of the virus, the county has expanded testing throughout the region, especially in the South Bay. Currently, more than 50% of all testing is being done in this region.The county opened its newest COVID-19 testing site in Imperial Beach last week. This new location brings the total number to six testing sites in South County. Additional testing sites are located in San Ysidro, two in Chula Vista and two in National City."We've not only expanded our testing, but we've also increased our contact tracing in the region," said Barbara Jimenez, director for the Central and South regions of the County Health and Human Services Agency.Jimenez has been spearheading the county's outreach efforts in South Bay communities and has been working with city mayors and other partners to get prevention, testing and tracing messages to area residents."We all need to follow the health prevention messages we've been promoting on preventing the spread of COVID-19. Let's take care of ourselves, our families and our community," Jimenez said.The county has also increased its contact tracing capabilities and now has more than 500 disease investigators and contact tracers who are calling people who tested positive for COVID-19 and their close contacts so that they place themselves in isolation or self-quarantine. Nearly 100 more case investigators will come on board this week and the county will be hiring another 200 from the more than 2,300 job applications it recently received.In collaboration with San Diego State University, the county is deploying about 100 specially trained community health workers and public health students as tracers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The co-founder and CEO of the Super Dentists said that during the current COVID-19 pandemic, patients have been hesitant to get dental work done."The American Dental Association did a survey, and about 75 to 80 percent of the patients across the country feel comfortable about going back to the dentist. About 15 percent want a vaccine before they go back,” said Dr. Kami Hoss.And while he understands the precautions people are making, Hoss said a recent study indicates dentist offices have shown to be safe."There have been zero cases of COVID related to any dentist offices,” Hoss said.And to further help ease the minds of dental patients, Hoss has just written a book titled, "If Your Mouth Could Talk.""I wanted to know what keeps parents up at night and what their worries are. I did some research, and I had 300 pages of stats on what keeps parents up at night. When I read them, I realized that so many of them could be related back to their mouths, and their kids mouths. So, I decided to write a book about it,” Hoss told ABC 10News.He's a dentist and an author, but that is not all. Hoss has a love of music, so he decided to write and compose songs for the Super Dentists. He said his musical inspiration is the rock band KISS."I think KISS made just like beautiful melodies you know with all the great performances they had at their concerts,” said Hoss.It may sound a bit strange a dentist composing music, but he said it has a purpose in the world of the Super Dentists."We do all of these things with characters, music, and the movies so the kids associate something positive to their oral health,” Hoss said. 1655
