SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego isn't called the "Capital of Craft" for nothing.April 7 marks National Beer Day across the U.S. So why did the powers that decide these "holidays" choose this date? On April 7, 1933, the Cullen-Harrison Act, signed by President Franklin Roosevelt, went into effect. The bill allowed beer to legally be manufactured and sold in the U.S. following the end of Prohibition.Needless to say, there are plenty of places to celebrate the day and local industry in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police officers will increase patrols near area houses of worship following Saturday's deadly shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue.SDPD Chief David Nisleit advised there are no indications of any threats with a connection to San Diego, but out of an abundance of caution, patrols would be increased."We are monitoring the situation in Pittsburgh and communicating with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners. At this time, there is nothing to indicate a connection to San Diego. However, in an abundance of caution, you will see extra patrols at houses of worship," Nisleit tweeted. 642

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County has been battered by storms this winter, showering the county for a bright and beautiful spring. But with that comes the possibility of more little creatures living off all that glorious foliage. So can San Diegans expect more mosquitoes buzzing around this season? Simple answer: Maybe.While it's possible the county could see more mosquitoes in the spring, more rain doesn't guarantee it, Jessica Northrup, from the county's Land Use and Environment Group, says.RELATED: Swarms of Painted Lady butterflies spotted in North County"... When it comes to mosquitoes, you have to wait and see if more rain equals more bugs. That is because increased rainfall can create more—or fewer—places for mosquitoes to lay eggs and breed. Places where water may have been stagnant could be flowing and mosquitoes don’t breed in flowing water," Northrup said.That's why the county urges residents to dump out standing water that may have collected due to recent rains.That message was amplified Friday, as the county reported the first sign of summer as a dead hawk in Lakeside tested positive for West Nile virus. The case was confirmed in an 11-month-old resident who had recently traveled to the Philippines, according to county health officials.Officials said the infant was unimmunized and is currently hospitalized and added others may have been exposed at the following locations: Kaiser Permanente Otay Mesa Medical Office Pediatric Clinic (4650 Palm Ave.) on July 29 from 6 to 9 p.m., Aug. 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Aug. 5 from 4:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.Kaiser Permanente Otay Mesa Medical Office Urgent Care and Pharmacy (4650 Palm Ave.) on Aug. 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center (9455 Clairemont Mesa Blvd.) on Aug. 5 from 8 to 10 p.m.County Health and Human Services is currently working with Kaiser Permanente to identify those who may have been exposed to determine if they are at risk.“Measles is a very contagious disease that can be spread easily by coughing, sneezing or being in the same room with an infected person,” Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said. “Anyone who was at any of these specific locations at the dates and times listed above should watch for symptoms and call their health care provider if they show any signs of the disease.”Measles developed seven to 21 days after exposure. Early symptom include fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes. A distinctive red rash usually appears one to four days after early symptoms appear. The rash typically begins on the face and head then spreads downward and outward.A person is considered contagious four days before the rash appears.Anyone with symptoms is asked to call their doctor’s office in before visiting directly.Complications from measles are more common in children younger than 5 years old and adults 20 years and older, though the risk is higher with children. Complications include diarrhea, ear infections, and pneumonia. In severe instances, death can occur.Since there is no treatment for measles, the best course is generally bed rest, fluids, and fever control medication. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego is one of the most rent-burdened cities in the entire country, according to a new report by Freddie Mac. The report claims that America’s Finest City is the second most rent-burdened city in the nation. Miami took the top spot on the list, followed by San Diego, Los Angeles, New York and Orlando. The report also found that those who make minimum wage would have to work nearly 100 hours per week to be able to afford the median rent. To come up with the report, Freddie Mac looked at how other organizations measure affordability to assess the rent-burden issue.
