SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Uber driver helped a Lyft driver after a crash on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley Monday.The Uber driver told 10News he was exiting eastbound I-8 at Mission Gorge Rd. at 1:45 a.m. when he saw an SUV on its side, blocking the road.The man turned on his hazard lights and used his Uber car to block the road while he ran to help, he said.The Lyft driver was trapped and screaming for help, according to the man.The Uber driver said he kicked the windshield until he formed a hole the Lyft driver could climb through.Paramedics took the Lyft driver to the hospital with cuts and bruises.CHP officers are investigating the cause of the crash.The Lyft driver was not arrested but told the CHP his 'mind wasn't working', according to Officer Jim Bettencourt. 806

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A World War II veteran is being honored not only for his service to our country but to the San Diego community.With the help of former students, current students, and staff at Hilltop High School in Chula Vista, the library was dedicated to World War II veteran Tom Rice. The lifelong Coronado resident was an Army paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division on D-Day. He was the first to jump out of his C-47 after it crossed the English Channel.RELATED: Retired Chula Vista teacher grateful for war hero's inspirationRice taught U.S. government in the Sweetwater Union High School District for more than 30 years, mostly at Hilltop High.The surprise was unveiled to Rice on Thursday. "Everyone has given me their grace, and I have nothing to return but just my presence, and that was it. The two women say Rice didn't talk about the war when he was a teacher; it wasn't until years later they learned of his bravery. "We are honored to know him and honored by what he did for us as students and what he did for our country," said Cappos Hardy.Rice is well known for returning to Normandy to reenact his D-Day jump in honor of those who never made it home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- According to a recently-released autopsy, a combination of cocaine, alcohol and blunt chest impact caused a man to die during a punching game in March downtown.The medical examiner ruled the death of 27-year-old Corey Poole an accident Monday. According to authorities, Poole went out drinking at Jolt’n Joe’s downtown just before 1 a.m. with friends.Police said Poole and one of his friends then decided to have a punching contest. Poole and his friend then started “consensually sparring” and punching one another in the chest.RELATED: Man killed in Gaslamp Quarter punching game identifiedIt was then, according to police, that Poole fell to the ground and became unresponsive. Poole was taken to the hospital where he later died.Poole’s friend was also taken to the hospital for chest pain following the incident. 850

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego professor is one of 55 people to make up California’s Electoral College for the 2020 election. Peter Bolland is the Chair of the Philosophy and Humanities Department at Southwestern College. He’s been at the school for 30 years and during that time taught Ammar Campa-Najjar, who is the person who selected him to become an elector.California gets 55 electors because of the 53 congressional districts and two senators. Electors are chosen by the party’s nominee who won the popular vote. Campa-Najjar got the most votes for Congress’ 50th District primary election in 2020, making him the person to choose the elector. Sure let's do it,'" said Bolland.Bolland said he’ll be flying to Sacramento on Dec. 14 to cast his vote. So Biden won California, I’ll be casting my vote for Biden regardless of what my political views are," said Bolland.He added that he’s honored to be chosen in such a historic role, but acknowledges the flaws in the Electoral College system."Politically, I’ve had my concerns and questions about the Electoral College. It’s fundamentally anti-democratic," he said.The Electoral College was created by our founding fathers in 1787. They wanted to find a balance between giving too much power to the people with a simple popular vote, without giving all of the power to Congress. The Electoral College was their solution.Bolland points out that it makes some votes useless.“Last night, Joe Biden won by like 60 something percent and Trump lost by 30 something percent. But that’s a lot of people in California who voted for Trump and with the Electoral College they get erased,” he said, adding that there are Biden votes that get erased in right-leaning states as well. 2095

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A teen is fighting for his life at Sharp Memorial Hospital after he was hit by a Jeep while riding his bike in Clairemont.According to CHP officers, the accident happened just before 9 p.m. on Saturday. Officers say a Jeep was getting onto the freeway at the Clairemont Mesa Boulevard on-ramp to the 805-N when he hit the teen riding his bike. The driver says he never saw the teen until it was too late. According to officers, the teen was not in a designated cross walk, but near it. The driver of the Jeep stayed on scene, his passenger jumped out to perform CPR while paramedics arrived.The teen suffered life threatening injuries. Drugs or alcohol are not suspected in the crash 712
