(KGTV/KNXV) - Insomnia is a problem we often associate with adults, but doctors say more kids are becoming insomniacs and they blame technology. Doctors say screen time, checking cell phones and tablets before bed is perking up the part of our brain that controls vision and kids aren't falling asleep. Not enough sleep is resulting in behavioral and attention problems, and as a result, parents notice grades are starting slip.The signs to look for: - Noisy breathing- Respiratory pauses- Increased restlessness- Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleepIf your child has an itchy nose, sneezes a lot, constantly picks their nose or have puffy eyes, it's the sign of another issue that's keeping them from getting good sleep."That's what we thought 20-30 years ago that lack of sleep, or sleep disturbances, would cause the puffy eyes. We actually know that puffy eyes are allergic shiners and that is the opposite relation. It's the allergic shiners that cause the sleep disturbances," said Dr. Walter Castro, a pulmonologist and pediatric sleep specialist for Banner Health. To improve sleep doctors suggest:- Get kids treated for allergies- Limit screen time before bed- Develop a routine like showering in dim light, reading a real book; it helps signal the brain that it's time to sleep.- More exercise- High schoolers may need a melatonin prescription because hormones make them night owlsA new study from Rand Corporation finds pushing back the first bell at school could not only help students get the sleep they need but also add billions of dollars to the economy.Based on an 8:30 a.m. start in 47 states, the study finds the first year returns start low because schools would have to invest in moving after school programs and maybe more buses as everyone would be on the same drop off schedule. It also projects a .3 billion surge in the first year. (KGTV) - Neighbors who live off a quiet Rancho Pe?asquitos road say they are fed up with crime, litter, and abandoned cars steps from their front doors.Danielle Salice, who lives in the area, says the region's high cost of living is keeping her from moving. "I'm paying good money to live in a place that's beautiful, San Diego, let alone owning my condo," she said. "But I'm not being able to use my neighborhood."Salice lives in a condo complex at the end of Azuega Street in Rancho Pe?asquitos. She and her neighbors are reporting drug paraphernalia, abandoned cars, and a series of car break-ins. On Friday, there were two piles of broken car glass in the road. One man who declined to give his name said his car was broken into last month, and his daughter's softball gear was stolen. Salice said it's an ongoing problem on the road. "As a single-family person, I don't feel safe walking on this street," she said. Here's the problem - Azuaga Street is a long straightaway largely hidden from view, just south of the 56. There are no homes on the final stretch of the road - one side has a retaining wall up a hill. The other is mostly brush. It ends at a condo complex called Terra Vista. "There's no lighting, and this is an easy place to hide," Salice said. Salice said her HOA has discussed adding a gate to the complex and a guard, but they are cost prohibitive. (KGTV) — President Trump stood by his demands for border wall funding, following a meeting with Democratic leadership Friday, ensuring more debate into the weekend over .6 billion for his border wall to end the government shutdown.In a press conference, the president discussed his meeting, calling it productive and saying he believed progress with Democrats had been made. "In short, I captured the second proposal, the more special and official one in Charlie’s words.
