SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Jodie Grenier joined the United States Marine Corps right out of high school, serving two tours in Iraq as part of the invasion in 2003 and the following year as an intelligence analyst in Falluja."My job was very meaningful and purposeful to me," said Grenier. "I fused information from all different sources; whether it was sniper teams, unmanned aerial vehicles, sensors on the ground, and really built a picture to brief unit commanders and mitigate threats to our troops."Grenier had tremendous responsibility but says the transition to civilian life was difficult."Finding employment. Having odd questions about whether I contributed as maybe the same as my male counterparts. It was a bit frustrating," she said.In her search for a new direction, Grenier came across a listing posted by Military Women in Need, a Southern California nonprofit founded in 1920 as a housing association for widows and war nurses. The group was looking for a new leader and with a passion for helping others, Grenier stepped in. She also gave them a new identity."The first thing I asked was, when are you going to change that awful name? Because 'Military Women In Need' just did not embody the spirit of the corps or the warrior spirit that I think resides in all of our veterans," said Grenier.The Foundation for Women Warriors was born with a new respect for the contributions and sacrifices being made by women in the military, while still recognizing the unique challenges they can face."We provide emergency financial assistance, childcare assistance, professional development, and more recently we opened up a warehouse to offset critical costs like baby wipes, formula, and diapers," Grenier says.As for that professional development, Grenier says their workshops don't pigeonhole; featuring a spectrum of employers."Whether it's finance, tech, aerospace, it can be trades. We've had Anderson Plumbing come and speak about HVAC and plumbing," she added.There are classes on negotiating salary and benefits, facing financial challenges like rent and childcare, and flexible work schedules for single parents. The support reaches some 1,300 local women and children a year."It's a community that I am a part of," says Grenier. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Restaurants are feeling backed into a corner after the pandemic forced them to add outdoor seating and Saturday brought cold rain and high winds.As the clouds rolled in, businesses across San Diego braced for impact."We were planning on covering everything up but we were kind of waiting and seeing just how big the storm was going to be," Whiskey Girl Manager Jake Southworth said.In the Gaslamp, he says they've been lucky this weekend, "We were ready to go with more of the tarps, to put out but waited till midnight when we were closed anyway, so definitely dodged a bullet there and today again it looks like it's going to hold off until later so I feel like we're still going to be doing good."Whiskey Girl is on a section of Fifth Avenue that shuts down to vehicle traffic Thursday through Saturday, allowing restaurants to spill into the street and seat more customers.The extra chairs help them stay afloat, but outside the rain and future winter weather are putting a damper on their options.Some businesses put up pop-up shades and umbrellas to provide some shelter against the weather."I mean it does open a lot more seating having outside but we'll see what the weather sends us," Southworth said.Every restaurant is also holding its breath, waiting to see if the county drops into the purple most restrictive tier next week, which would mean no indoor dining at all."How can I ask someone to spend, you know - on a drink if they're sitting outside shivering and the rain's coming through?" Tipsy Crow Director of Operations Nathan Colonero said they would have to close down and let go of their staff.The threat of the purple tier has been hanging over San Diegan's heads for a month and a half.Many businesses are frustrated with the roller coaster of changes, and hopeful a new president will mean changes that will help them through. 1885

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego police officials have announced the arrest of two suspects in the murder of a security guard who was gunned down outside of an East Village homeless shelter last month.In a release sent Tuesday night, San Diego Police Department Acting Capt. Martha Sainz said homicide investigators were led to two suspects in the case through witness accounts and collected video footage from the area including from Smart Streetlights.The high-quality images obtained from the Smart Streetlights allowed investigators to identify 47-year-old Floyd Garrett and 40-year-old Johnny Hill as the suspects, according to Sainz."On January 4, 2020, investigators tracked Garrett to Phoenix, Arizona where he was arrested with the assistance of the Phoenix Police Department. Garrett will remain in custody in Phoenix, pending extradition hearings," said Sainz.Hill was located in San Diego and arrested by San Diego Police officers Tuesday without incident. He was booked into county jail for the murder.Both men are from San Diego, according to Sainz.Ernest Lee Buchanan, 44, was killed on Dec. 28 outside the Alpha Project shelter on Imperial Avenue. Buchanan was returning from taking a meal break when someone approached him and opened fire. Buchanan was taken to the hospital but died from his injuries a short time later. 1344

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan is objecting to the early release of a man convicted of driving off the Coronado Bridge and crashing in Chicano Park, killing four people.Richard Anthony Sepolio, 27, was convicted of four counts of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and one count of DUI causing injury in the crash on Oct. 15, 2016. He was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison. He is set to be released early after serving two years and 10 months of his sentence. Monday, the CDCR notified victims in the case of the release, citing prison credits for good behavior and the state's policy on release amid COVID-19. Stephan wrote a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), calling the release a "miscarriage of justice.""This very early release is unconscionable," Stephan wrote. "CDCR’s decision is re-victimizing the family and friends of the four people killed and seven injured who have been devastated by their loss and continue to deal with the financial, emotional, mental and physical trauma caused by the defendant. This inmate continues to deny and minimize the crime by refusing to admit he was speeding and denying being impaired while arguing with his girlfriend on the phone, which resulted in the devastating crash."The crash killed Annamarie Contreras, 50, and Cruz Contreras, 52, of Chandler, Ariz.; and Hacienda Heights residents Andre Banks, 49, and Francine Jimenez, 46. Seven other people were also seriously injured.Sepolio was traveling between 81 and 87 miles per hour when he lost control and plunged over the bridge, landing in the park below where a motorcycle rally had attracted nearly 1,000 people, according to Stephan. Sepolio had testified that another vehicle would not let him over into the left-hand lane, so he sped up twice to pass before the crash occurred. 1912

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego drivers will have more opportunities to take care of driver’s license renewals and vehicle-related needs thanks to longer hours at California Department of Motor Vehicles offices. Starting Monday, 69 offices will be open for customers at 7 a.m., four days a week. On Wednesdays, the offices will open at 9 a.m. The DMV is offering extended service due to the high demand for Real ID compliant drivers licenses.The early hours will be available in San Diego County at the following DMV locations: El CajonOceansidePowaySan Diego (Hillcrest)San Diego (Clairemont)San Ysidro The Chula Vista DMV office has had extended hours since last summer.
