BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Renowned China economist Li Yining said Saturday that adjusting the structure of China's economy is a "matter of life and death" while the structure of GDP is more important than its size.The focus of the country's economic structure adjustment now should be transforming the dual structure in the urban and rural economy, which causes the widening income gaps between urban and rural residents, Li said at the China Economic Forum.He also noted that the key to stimulating domestic demand is to raise the workers' wages.With the external demand waned, the Chinese government has attempted to turn to domestic consumers to take up the slack. The country vows to expand domestic demand next year and increase residents' income, especially for disadvantaged groups.However, Li said raising household income is not enough and the government also needs to improve its social security system as well as increase construction of affordable houses and public rental houses.The country plans to begin construction or renovation on at least 7 million housing units for low-income groups next year, Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development Jiang Weixin said Friday.

PHNOM PENH, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia reported on Monday that some 54 Cambodian children had been killed by dengue fever in the first nine months of this year, compared to 37 kids dying of the disease in the whole year of 2010.From January to September this year, some 12,392 cases of dengue fever had been reported with 54 children killed by the disease. The whole year 2010 reported only 5,497 cases, Ngan Chantha, director of dengue control at the Ministry of Health, said on Monday."This year's rainy season has been plagued by floods, leading to more cases of the disease," he said. "I would like to appeal to parents to let their children sleep under mosquito nets and if their kids have any symptom that is suspicious of the disease, they should urgently send them for medical attention."Dengue is caused by mosquitoes. The disease causes an acute illness of sudden onset that usually follows symptoms such as headache, fever, exhaustion, severe muscle and joint pain, swollen glands and rash.In Cambodia, the outbreak of dengue fever usually begins at the onset of the rainy season from May to October. 

BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- The State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), the country's largest electric power transmission and distribution company, said Saturday that the power supply will be sufficient during the upcoming Spring Festival holiday.Thermal power plants currently have 89.34 million tonnes of coal, which is enough for 20 days of power generation.Meanwhile, the country's electricity consumption is expected to fall by 40 percent during the holiday which lasts from Jan. 22 to Jan. 28, as many factories suspend production during the period, SGCC said.The company said it will keep a close eye on the cold weather, strengthen inspections and maintenance of high-voltage grids, and take precautions to minimize the impact of snow and freezing rain on power transmission.

SUVA, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- There are 60 typhoid cases in Nanoko, with 29 already hospitalized, according to Fiji's Health Ministry.Senior Health Inspector Paula Laqere said Sunday that the increas means that people are not practicing proper hygiene standards. Laqere said most of the communities in Fiji have a really low level of good hygiene practices.The other problem is that some communities in Fiji have very poor sources of clean and safe water and this is what Fijian guests need to be cautious of."Typhoid is basically spread through contaminated water and our hygiene practices. It's an indicator that the sanitation level of any community is really low."A 30 day public health emergency is in place for the village, effective from Dec. 12 to Jan. 12.Recently, Fiji recorded rates of high typhoid fever in the world, said WHO South Pacific Communicable Disease Surveillance and Response Team leader doctor Jacob Kool.Kool said typhoid fever was difficult to diagnose and could be fatal in 10-20 percent of untreated patients.Recent studies showed that infants are commonly affected and are extremely vulnerable to the disease. Outbreaks occur regularly in areas with poor hygiene and sanitation including urban slums, he said.Kool said the only reliable symptom was prolonged fever and blood and stool culture are still the best available diagnostic tests but have a high rate of false negative results. He said therefore suspected typhoid cases should be treated regardless of the result of lab tests and ciprofloxacin was the recommended therapy for all age groups.Last year AusAID, WHO and UNICEF launched a typhoid fever vaccination campaign in Fiji.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Google will launch its new music service next week, U.S. media reported on Friday.In an emailed invitation, Google said it will hold an event called "These Go to Eleven" next Wednesday in Los Angeles, which is expected to be the debut of Google Music, tech news website The Verge reported.Google is reported to be adding new features over the current version of its music service, such as a MP3 music store with connection to its social network Google+.According to a separate report from technology news site CNET on Friday, Google has not yet got licensing deals with all four of the major labels -- Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and EMI.Google introduced a beta version of its music service called Music Beta in May, enabling users to upload their entire music libraries for free to Google servers and stream songs from any browser or Android-based devices.Since the search giant failed to come to license agreements with major music labels at the time, Music Beta is essentially a massive cloud storage hard drive.
