CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — Legoland California's massive "Star Wars" section of the park's Miniland area will depart for a galaxy far, far away next year. The park said the area will make way for something new eventually, but is tight-lipped on what guests can expect to take the attraction's place. Guests have until Jan. 6, 2020 to visit the themed display."We’re always creating new adventures for our guests and excited to bring new experiences in the upcoming years. We haven’t announced yet what will take the place of LEGO Star Wars Miniland but know it’s been a popular area which is why we wanted to give our guests a heads up to come visit before it’s gone," a park spokesperson said.RELATED: German father and son visit every Legoland park in the world in 13 daysKids and adults have visited Legoland's "Star Wars" Miniland for almost a decade now. More than 1.5 million Lego bricks make up seven scenes from the franchise's first six films, including displays of the Millennium Falcon on Tatooine, a battle on the frozen planet Hoth, and an imposing Death Star surrounded by X-Wings and TIE Fighters. The area's last major addition came in 2017 with the opening of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in 2017. A 16-foot-long Star Destroyer Finalizer made of more than 350,000 Lego bricks was installed as the Miniland's longest Lego model ever created. The park did not say what would happen to the gigantic models displayed throughout the land or what prompted the decision to close the area.RELATED: Groundbreaking held for SeaWorld's Sesame Place San Diego theme park in Chula VistaBut the closing comes as Star Wars takes a larger place in the Disney realm, with the opening of "Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge" at Disneyland and Disney World this past year.Legoland is busy developing its latest expansion as well. The "Lego Movie World" will be Legoland's largest addition to date, bringing characters from "The Lego Movie" to the park with new rides and attractions, and character meet-and-greets. The new land is scheduled to open in 2020. 2051
Cereal company General Mills announced on Thursday that its employees are eligible for up to 20 weeks of paid maternity leave under a new company policy, effective Jan. 1, 2019. Also part of the announcement, General Mills said it will offer up to 12 weeks for paid paternity and adoption leave for its employees. While the United States' Family Medical Leave Act requires most employers to allow staff to take up to 12 weeks off, the act does not require employers to pay employees for leave. General Mills said the new rules apply to its salaried and non-union employees. Other changes in family leave policy announced by General Mills include: ● Caregiver Leave: A new benefit in 2019, General Mills will now offer caregivers a two-week paid leave for the care of immediate family members with a serious health condition. 882
CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) — The last two cottages to grace San Onofre Beach and replace the deteriorated trailers near Camp Pendleton will be dedicated Thursday. The Camp Pendleton Cottage Renovation Project has worked to replace 13 of the 30-year-old FEMA trailers at the beach with manufactured homes. The new cottages are build using metal roofs, composite siding, stainless-steel appliances, and furniture. Cottages are also constructed to include wheelchair accessibility, railings, and wider hallways for service members with special needs. RELATED: World War II veteran laid to rest in MiramarService members from any branch of the armed forces can rent the cottages for short-term stays during the summer, based on service classification level for active duty members or retired personnel. While the stay may be short, the trailers that once sat on the beach didn't provide much comfort and were "corroded beyond repair and without handicap accessibility."San Diego Nice Guys, a non-profit that works to help underserved San Diegans, provided the funding for four of the 13 cottages at the beach.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Millennial veteran home purchases surging"The Nice Guys have been long-time supporters of the military and their families," Jeff Schreiber, Nice Guys president, said. "This project is another way to show that we recognize and appreciate those who have sacrificed so much for us."Back in 2015 when two beach cottages were dedicated, Bob Clelland, chairman of the Camp Pendleton Cottage Renovation Project, said the newly installed homes are integral to local military life."It’s a place that allows you to clear your head and get away from the difficulties of life, some of which might be related to military service," said Clelland. "We’ve provided for those with physical disabilities handicap-friendly kitchens, toilets and passages."I think some of the wounds that our servicemembers are coming back with are those that you can’t see. A peaceful place like this can help heal those wounds." 2041
