UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its support for a peaceful and comprehensive settlement of the Darfur issue, saying that efforts should be made to remove the root causes that resulted in such an issue.The statement came as Yang Tao, the counselor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was taking the floor at an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."Currently, it is very important to maintain security and stability in Darfur," Yang said. "It is hoped that all parties to the Darfur conflict can solve their differences in a peaceful manner through political dialogue, and reconciliation should be achieved and violence avoided.""Achieving substantial result at an early date of the Darfur peace process and reaching a comprehensive political agreement represents a basic guarantee for the long-term peace and stability in Darfur," he said."Without a robust political process, there would be no peace and stability in Darfur, neither would there be the protection of civilians, humanitarian assistance, economic recovery and reconstruction," he said."We once again urged the armed groups which have not yet joined the Doha political process to do so immediately without any conditions," he said.As a mediator of the Darfur peace process, Doha has brokered several rounds of talks between Khartoum and rebel groups over the past years.The Chinese government has decided to make an additional donation of 500,000 U.S. dollars to the UN Trust Fund for the political process in Darfur, he said. BANGKOK, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese military will adopt a more open and cooperative attitude when developing friendly ties with Thailand's armed forces, a senior Chinese defense official said Monday.Ma Xiaotian, deputy chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army of China, made the pledge at the 9th Defence and Security Consultations between the Chinese and Thai Defence Ministries.Complex and profound changes are taking place in regional situations, said Ma. It is the responsibility of governments and armed forces in the region to enhance international cooperation, jointly cope with challenges, safeguard regional peace and stability to create favorable security conditions for common development, Ma said.The Chinese military is willing to boost in-depth, wide-ranging and all-dimensional ties with Thailand, building upon past achievements, Ma said.General Kittipong Keskowit, permanent secretary for defence of Thailand, hailed the long-lasting friendly cooperation between Thailand and China.He also expressed Thailand's willingness to continue carrying out close military exchanges and cooperation with China so as to contribute to the eternal friendship between the two countries and to the peace and stability of the region.During the event, Ma, on behalf of the Chinese military, donated 20 transport speedboats to Thailand to support its fight against the current floods.Ma arrived in Thailand on Saturday for a three-day visit at the invitation of the Thai Defence Ministry.

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec), China's largest oil refiner, said Friday it has suspended diesel exports to relieve shortages in the domestic market.Sinopec also said it is seeking to import 200,000 tonnes of diesel.PetroChina Co., China's largest oil producer, plans to import 200,000 tonnes of diesel. Some 35,000 tonnes of it has already arrived.Insiders said China's diesel output in the first nine months soared, prompting the two oil giants to expand exports.Sinopec attributed recent hikes in the domestic price of diesel to hoarding, seasonal factors, transport factors and energy-saving measures."The fundamental reason for the diesel shortage is the industry monopoly. Oil refiners are not keen to increase production because profit margins in the sector are relatively low," said Qi Fang, director of the Hebei Provincial Petroleum Industry Chamber of Commerce."The two oil giants operate on a planned-economy basis, resulting in an unbalanced supply-and-demand situation. Supply and demand can easily outstrip each other as government planning cannot keep pace with changes in the market," Qi said.Statistics from the General Administration of Customs show China exported 360,000 tonnes of diesel in October - only slightly lower than the 368,100 tonnes it exported in September - even as diesel shortages worsened.Diesel imports in October rose to 400,000 tonnes, up from 250,000 tonnes in September.
