Evan Stratton, and his three other crew members, set sail Thursday to row across the Atlantic Ocean -- all 3,000 miles of it.“We didn’t know each other seven months ago,” John Fannin, one of the crew members, said. All four of the men are U.S. Veterans.“More people have been and climbed Mount Everest and been in space than they’ve ever rowed an ocean,” Stratton said about the trans-Atlantic ocean row. They work in shifts, three hours rowing and three hours sleeping non-stop or days.“We’re shooting for 40 [days] but really just trying to get there in one piece,” Stratton said. This is all part of the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge, an annual ocean rowing race that starts in the Canary Islands off of the Spanish coast and finishes in Antigua near Puerto Rico. The journey takes at least a month. And this year, the four-man “Fight Oar Die” rowing crew is the only American team to attempt it. This is also the second time in its history an all-Veteran team has attempted it.“They won’t say it because they’re too humble but I’ll brag on them,” Fannin said. “Luke and Evan will be the first U.S. veteran combat wounded to do it.”It’s a physical feat, but one of mental endurance as well.“We’ll be periodically checking in with the rowers throughout,” Shelly Smith-Acu?a, Dean of the Graduate School of Professional Psychology at Denver University, said. Researchers at the school helped the rowers prepare mentally, and are studying them and their journey to better understand resilience.“They’re doing this, again to spread a message about strength and resilience, recovery, and again about facing adversity,” Smith-Acuna said.“We all want to be challenged, we all want to do something great with our lives,” Fannin said.“I think it’s amazing for veterans to go out and showcase what their abilities are,” Amanda Steele, a Veteran Affairs Office Recreation Therapy Supervisor, said. “Overcome that external stigma but also that internal stigma that our veterans face, such as the belief that they’re not able to be successful.”While the four veterans take off on this challenge as part of the rowing team for the nonprofit organization Fight Oar Die, they are also raising awareness for veteran mental health issues.“One of the things in common in the mission is to raise awareness about mental health issues and mental wellness in the veteran community,” Smith-Acuna said. 2396

Chris Watts' 4-year-old daughter knew her mother and younger sister, Celeste, had just been killed -- and she feared she would be next."Please Daddy, don't do to me what you just did to Cece," said Bella, according to a lawyer for the family of Shannan Watts, the girls' mother.Earlier, Bella had walked into the room just after Watts had strangled his wife, Shannan, and was wrapping her in a sheet to dispose of her body. "What are you doing with Mommy?" Bella asked her father.Bella's last words and other details about the disturbing familial murders were revealed by attorney Steven Lambert on Tuesday's "Dr. Phil" show.Lambert's summary of the events provides a chilling picture of how Chris Watts killed his pregnant wife, Shanann, 34, and their two children, Bella and Celeste, 3, and then disposed of their bodies at a secluded oil field where he worked. During Thanksgiving weekend in 2003, President George W. Bush wanted to spend part of the holiday with active service members in Iraq. It took an immense amount of planning by a very small, trusted group around the President to make sure Bush would make it back to the United States safely. The mission for Bush to secretly land in Iraq came just months after a joint coalition of nations, including the United States, overthrew the regime of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.Making the covert trek to the Middle East has since been copied by President Barack Obama, and on Wednesday, President Donald Trump. For Bush’s mission, it was not until after Air Force One was in the sky that the public was notified. Bush had to sneak out of his Crawford, Texas, ranch and fly to Washington, D.C. to get on Air Force One, which was disguised as a civilian jet. As the plane neared Iraq, all the lights went out inside Air Force One, and the window shades were lowered. At 5:30 p.m. Baghdad time, Air Force One had landed in Iraq. Bush had two and a half hours to meet with nearly 600 troops celebrating Thanksgiving before he had to be back in the air. Bush told reporters that had any word of the visit leaked, he would have had to turn around. "I was fully prepared to turn this baby around and come home," he said. "Three hours out, I checked with our Secret Service and checked with the people on the ground. They assured me that we still had a tight hold on the information."On Wednesday, Trump made his first visit to a combat zone, meeting with troops in Iraq. Trump said from Baghdad he was concerned about the safety of those accompanying him to Iraq. “I had concerns about the institution of the presidency,” Trump said. “Not for myself personally. I had concerns for the First Lady, I will tell you. But if you would have seen what we had to go through with the darkened plane with all windows closed with no lights on whatsoever, anywhere. Pitch black. I've never seen it- I've been on many airplanes. All types and shapes and sizes. I've never seen anything like it.”Despite the secrecy that went into Trump’s voyage, there were rumors circulating on social media involving a possible Trump visit to the Middle East. While Bush’s visit did not have to content with rumors via Twitter, some on the social media platform reported sightings of Air Force One over Europe. Now, I'm not saying Trump is currently heading to the Middle East to visit troops. BUT...There's been some interesting aircraft movements the last couple of days. Some I've already tweeted... And a VC-25A has been reported over the UK earlier today. Watch this space! ??— CivMilAir ??????? (@CivMilAir) 2685

Dog owners need to stop feeding dogs pig ear treats to end the spread of Salmonella to both humans and dogs nationwide, the CDC said on Wednesday. The CDC's statement comes weeks after previous advisories indicating that dozens have become sick after their dogs consumed pig ear treats. Even after the CDC said two weeks ago that there is a possible correlation between pig ear treats for dogs and Salmonella illness in humans, 34 people have reported an illness. In total, 127 have become ill in connection to this Salmonella outbreak, the CDC says. Nearly 30% of the illnesses have resulted in hospitalizations, the CDC says. The CDC said that the treats came from many different suppliers and is the likely source of this outbreak. The CDC offers the following advice:Tips to stay healthy while feeding your dogAlways wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water right after handling pet food or treats, including pig ears. When possible, store pet food and treats away from where human food is stored or prepared and away from the reach of young children.Don’t use your pet’s feeding bowl to scoop food. Use a clean, dedicated scoop, spoon, or cup.Always follow any storage instructions on pet food bags or containers.Play safelyDon’t let your pet lick your mouth or face after it eats pet food or treats.Don’t let your pet lick any open wounds or areas with broken skin.If you do play with your pet after it has just eaten, wash your hands and any part of your body it licked with soap and water.Shop safelyAlways wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after touching unpackaged pet treats, such as food or treats in bulk bins.Take extra care around young childrenChildren younger than 5 years old should not touch or eat pet food or treats.Young children are at risk for illness because their immune systems are still developing and because they are more likely than others to put their fingers or other items into their mouths.Adults should supervise handwashing for young childrenHow do I know if my dog has Salmonella infection? Some dogs may have Salmonella infection but may not look sick. Dogs with a Salmonella infection usually have diarrhea that may contain blood or mucus. Affected animals may seem more tired than usual, and may have a fever or vomit. If your dog or cat has these signs of illness or you are concerned that your pet may have Salmonellainfection, please contact your pet’s veterinarian. 2439
