CAPE CORAL, Fla., — A Florida utilities crew discovered a fossil archeologists now believe may be of a woolly mammoth or mastodon.The crew was digging in a trench 17 feet below the ground in Cape Coral last month.The crew turned over the fossil to the city which brought in archeologists to assess it.Robert Carr with the Archeological and Historical Conservancy says the fossil fragment was probably part of the mammoth’s humorous bone, or upper arm.The fossil is roughly one foot long and 10 inches wide.He estimates the fossil is 12,500 to 250,000 years old, based on similar discoveries.According to the report, during that time "glacial retreat led to the formation of savannas across Florida and herds of mammoth, bison, antelope, and horse roamed the peninsula."According to the Florida Museum of Natural History (FMNH), there are only two recorded mammoth fossil sites in Lee County.However, Carr believes there may be other fossil beds within the city with the remains of other extinct mammals.The City of Cape Coral plans to donate the fossil to the Cape Coral Historical Museum in the coming months. 1138

(KGTV) - A brush fire on base at Camp Pendleton was visible above North San Diego County Monday afternoon.Camp Pendleton officials reported the vegetation fire was located on range 409, at the northeast end of the base.The smoke was reported in the Fallbrook area near the base, according to North County Fire. SDG&E's Alert fire camera showed a large plume from the Red Mountain viewpoint."There is no threat to our district at this time," North County Fire tweeted. Camp Pendleton officials confirmed there was no danger to structures.Base officials said on Twitter later Monday night that the forward progress of the fire had been stopped. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — Prosecutors Wednesday say two transients accused of a deadly home invasion robbery this week stabbed the victim 50 times in the face, neck, and back.Ian Bushee, 37, and Malissa James, 26, are both accused of breaking into a home in the 1800 block of Outrigger Lane just after midnight Monday. During the break-in the victim, identified as 63-year-old Marjorie Gawitt, was stabbed multiple times.Gawitt was still able to call 911 to report the incident and was conscious and breathing when police arrived. She was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, where she died of her injuries.RELATED: Police identify suspects in deadly Carlsbad stabbing, burglaryBushee and James fled the scene in Gawitt's vehicle, according to police. The vehicle was found in San Marcos and the two were arrested in the 4800 block of Park Drive later Monday.Each has been charged with homicide, burglary, conspiracy, and auto theft. Bushee was also charged with accessory after the fact. James also also charged with torture. The pair was already on probation in San Bernardino for residential burglary.Both defendants pleaded not guilty of all charges.Bail was not set for Bushee or James, as they were determined to be a threat to the community.Both face the death penalty. Charlottesville, Virginia, is again bracing for journalists and protesters to converge on the city as jury selection begins Monday for the man accused of killing Heather Heyer at last year's Unite the Right rally.James Fields of Maumee, Ohio, is accused of plowing his Dodge Challenger into a crowd of counterprotesters during the August 2017 white nationalist gathering, killing Heyer and injuring several other people, police say.Heyer, 32, was a local paralegal and had attended the rally to speak out against white supremacy and racism. Her friends and families say she died for her beliefs.Fields stands charged with first-degree murder in Heyer's death. He also faces five counts of malicious wounding, three counts of aggravated malicious wounding and one count of failing to stop at an accident involving a death.Separately, he is charged with hate crimes in a 30-count federal indictment. Prosecutors in that case allege Fields espoused white supremacist ideals and denounced minorities on social media before traveling to Virginia for the rally.
