SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Interstate 15 Express Lane signs are being changed from white to green, with other improvements, at a cost of .5 million, the San Diego County Association of Governments said Thursday.A research effort determined that the existing signs could be difficult for drivers to read, and that information about toll rates and permission to use the lanes was unclear, according to SANDAG."There's quite a bit of confusion on the motorists part, trying to understand, can I actually get in there as a carpool or not?" said Ray Traynor, SANDAG's director of operations. "Having a system that's clear to the end users is vitally important so that the lanes operate effectively."A spokesman for Caltrans says research showed a green sign with white text was more difficult to read, with the amount of information on the sign. The I-15 Express Lanes stretch for 20 miles between SR-78 in Escondido and SR-163 in Kearny Mesa. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones gathered at Sunset Cliffs Friday to remember a high school student who died after jumping from 20 feet up, and drowning.10News learned the 15-year-old Anthony Womack and some friends skipped school to spend time at Sunset Cliffs on Wednesday.His friends told San Diego Lifeguards that the teen jumped into the water but immediately started to panic. The friends said they were unaware that Womack did not know how to swim.Friday night more than 100 people gathered to remember and mourn his loss."It was amazing seeing him every single day, seeing how happy he was walking to class," student Christian Perez said."I was walking to PE and heard someone say Anthony's drowning, and I ran up to them and said what happened and they said Anthony, Anthony's dead. Right when I heard that my whole body just froze, I had no words to say, I just started bursting out tears," he said.As the news spread, Christian said everyone was stunned, "the whole school was quiet, walking through, all the friends, it felt empty not having him there."Anthony's Grandma spoke with friends who were at the cliffs the day he died, giving her closure knowing exactly what happened. She also said it was only the second time he ever ditched school."He passed but he's still here, he's in all their hearts, their eyes and their minds, they all know him," Anthony's uncle, Garney Crews, said.At the vigil Crews brought the students together on the cliff, where Anthony jumped, "they had all their heads down, they were mourning , we don't want that. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Monday activist groups rallied at events throughout the day with the same message, more needs to be done to stop police brutality."My son was not killed he was murdered," Richard Abuka's son, Alfred Olango, was shot and killed by police in El Cajon back in 2016.Monday morning he stood on the steps of the Hall of Justice with other activists dredging up tragedy, compelling people to hear their message that new policies to hold police accountable need to be put in place. They held a banner with the names of those lost at the hands of law enforcement throughout the county."I've been pulled over numerous times, ripped out of my car, my car searched just because I'm driving with tattoos," a former convict by the nickname "Flaco" said at the Teach-In event held at San Diego City College.The events all supporting the National Day of Actions to Stop Police Brutality."We don't need cops," panelists spoke on ways to find a solution."I do work with the police and the DAs department in training their officers, and I help run a restorative justice program that's city wide and I'm expanding it to county wide," Aeiramique Blake said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Kristin Elliott is CEO of Precision Engineering in Vista, a company that creates water quality sensors for oceans and lakes, "we sell these to universities around the world, work with Scripps Institution of Oceanography," Elliott described.Her work is her passion but so is her team, so when the pandemic hit she said it was her goal not to layoff any employees, taking a pay cut so her team could stay paid."We wanted to save our team through this," she said. Then, there was the announcement kids would be returning to school online."We have this space that we're not gonna be utilizing because no one's having in-person conferences, we're all over zoom these days," turning the room into a classroom. "It's large enough to fit 3 or 4 kids and that's exactly the number of kids we have with our employees. We're going to have a little reading area where kids can switch places to relax and reset. All the things you can normally find in a classroom, a bookshelf with all the interests they might have." Elliott even went to great lengths, hiring an accredited teacher's assistance to help."It's definitely a relief. I know they were just thinking about homeschooling and working, trying to manage that. There's so many emotions involved and so much anxiety and stress, and my goal was to reduce that for our employees."Elliott has followed all CDC protocols and guidelines for her 15 employees working in office, and she'll do the same when their kids come fall."We're still getting the room set up because we want to ensure social distancing between the children and the teacher.
