BEIJING, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang met with Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey on Monday, calling for enhanced exchanges and contacts between the two countries.This year marks the 60th anniversary of China-Switzerland diplomatic ties. BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhuanet) --Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co is expected to complete it takeover of Swedish luxury car brand Volvo from US automaker Ford Motor Co on Monday after getting government approval for the deal.Ministry of Commerce officials told China Daily on Thursday that the government cleared the Volvo deal on Monday 26, after the National Development and Reform Commission cleared the proposal last week.Geely has also got the necessary anti-trust approvals from the European Union and the US government for the deal.Li Shufu (center), chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Co, arrives for a news conference in Beijing earlier this year. The Geely-Volvo deal has won approval from the Chinese government."With this the decks are now clear for Geely to complete its acquisition of Volvo and start manufacturing the brand in China," said Wang Zhile, director of the research center on transnational corporations under the Ministry of Commerce.Yuan Xiaolin, Geely's spokesman for the Volvo deal was unavailable on Thursday for comment. However, unnamed sources from Geely told China Daily that the Zhejiang-based automaker will hold a formal function on Monday to complete the deal.Geely's shares surged nearly 11.32 percent and closed at HK.95 per share in Hong Kong on Thursday.Privately owned Geely paid .8 billion to acquire the Volvo car brand from Ford on March 28 this year. BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's National Meteorological Center forecast Thursday that heavy rains would continue during the next 24 hours in northeast China, a region already soaked following weeks of torrential rains.The observatory continued to issue an orange rain alert, the second most serious level, on Thursday, warning that rainstorms would hit most parts of the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin and Helongjiang over the next 24 hours, adding pressure to the country's efforts to combat floods.Rain-triggered floods have left 1,072 people dead and 619 others missing this year in China. Economic losses were estimated at 210 billion yuan (31.34 billion U.S. dollars), Shu Qingpeng, deputy director of the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, said Wednesday.Meanwhile, the observatory forecast that heat would continue in south China during the next 24 hours.Temperatures are likely to hit 35 to 38 degrees Celsius in southeast Shaanxi Province, some parts of Sichuan and Guizhou provinces and areas along the Huaihe River. BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- China has vowed to continue to develop its human rights dialogue with Norway after the two nations concluded their 13th annual Roundtable on Human Rights and the Rule of Law here Friday.Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin briefed Norwegian representatives on Chinese achievements in improving people's livelihoods, reinforcing democracy, and constructing legal systems.The human rights roundtable between China and Norway is a model for countries with different social systems and from different civilizations to conduct equal and friendly dialogue, Liu said.China hopes to strengthen dialogue and exchange with other countries on human rights issues on the basis of equality and mutual respect to increase understanding, expand agreement and jointly promote the healthy development of human rights internationally.Norwegian Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Gry Larsen spoke highly of China's remarkable achievements with human rights, saying the two nations have conducted stable and effective cooperation in the field of human rights.The Norway-China roundtable has served as a helpful platform for the two nations to discuss human rights issues and is conducive to the growth of bilateral ties, he said.Larsen said Norway will work with China to further promote the roundtable.During the two-day roundtable, nearly 70 officials and scholars from the two sides exchanged views on the rights of workers, prisoners and minorities.Liu and Larsen also discussed human rights, covering such topics as freedom of speech, the rights of minorities and the role of non-governmental organizations.China and Norway started discussing human rights issues in an informal setting in 1993. URUMQI, June 16 (Xinhua) -- A total of 380 Chinese nationals had returned home aboard Chinese chartered flights as of Tuesday night from southern Kyrgyzstan where ethnic clashes have left some 170 people dead.The Chinese government has sent four chartered planes to bring home nationals including business people and students in Kyrgyzstan. Three chartered planes dispatched on Monday and Tuesday have returned and the fourth one left at 9:37 p.m. Tuesday an airport in Urumqi, capital of northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, for Osh of Kyrgyzstan to fly home more Chinese nationals.More than 600 Chinese nationals living around Osh have been sent to the city's airport with help from the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese embassy in Kyrgyzstan. The chartered planes also carried food, medicine, oxygen and medical equipment.The first two chartered planes returned to Urumqi at about 4:25 a.m. (Beijing time) and 5:18 a.m. (Beijing time) respectively on Tuesday, bringing home 195 nationals, mostly women and children.The third chartered plane landed at Urumqi airport at 10:50 p.m (Beijing time)Tuesday, carrying another 185 Chinese nationals."I did not expect that the government would send chartered planes to take us back home," Song Wuyi, a businessman selling stationery in Osh, told Xinhua upon arrival. "We feel at ease back in the motherland.""Many people shed happy tears when they see the plane arriving in Osh," said Song, whose store was forced to close after the unrest."Thank the government for taking us back and thank all of you," said Ahmet, a Uygur man in his forties. "This is the first time I thank our motherland......and I will remember this experience forever.""Many of my Kyrgyz clients in Osh admire me being a Chinese," said Kamijiang, who does fodder business in Kyrgyzstan.
