(AP) — A federal judge has ordered the U.S. Census Bureau for the time being to stop following a plan that would have had it winding down operations in order to finish the 2020 census at the end of September. The federal judge in San Jose, California, issued a temporary restraining order late Saturday against the Census Bureau and the Commerce Department, which oversees the agency. The order stops the Census Bureau from winding down operations until a court hearing is held on Sept. 17. The head count of every U.S. resident every ten years helps determine how .5 trillion in federal funding is distributed and how many congressional seats each state gets. Those who have not filled out the paper census yet can fill it out online by going to the official census 2020 website. The temporary restraining order was requested by a coalition of cities, counties and civil rights groups that had sued the Census Bureau, demanding it restore its previous plan for finishing the census at the end of October, instead of using a revised plan to end operations at the end of September. The coalition had argued the earlier deadline would cause the Census Bureau to overlook minority communities in the census, leading to an inaccurate count.Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Census Bureau pushed back ending the count from the end of July to the end of October and asked Congress to extend the deadline for turning in the apportionment numbers from December, as required by law, into next spring. When the Republican-controlled Senate failed to take up the request, the bureau was forced to create a revised schedule that had the census ending in September, according to the statistical agency. 1720

One of the stars from Netflix's "Tiger King," Bhagavan "Doc" Antle, was indicted in Virginia for trafficking in wildlife, the attorney general announced Friday.According to a press release, Virginia Attorney General Mark R. Herring said Antle was indicted for illegally selling lion clubs to Wilson's Wild Animal Park after a months-long investigation by Herring's Animal Law Unit.Herring said Antle and Wilson trafficked lion cubs between Virginia and South Carolina, which led to their indictments.Herring said investigators looked into the relationship between Antle and Wilson's Wild Animal Park owner Keith A. Wilson and found that they trafficked lion cubs between Virginia and South Carolina.That investigation led authorities to seize 119 animals, including tigers, bears, and camels in August 2019 from Wilson's "roadside zoo" in Winchester, Virginia.In Nov. 2019, Wilson and his nephew Christian Dall'Acqua were indicted on 46 counts of animal cruelty. Ohio State University football coach Urban Meyer was suspended for three games without pay in the wake of an investigation into exactly what he knew about spousal abuse allegations leveled against former assistant coach Zach Smith, the university announced Wednesday night.Athletic Director Gene Smith was suspended without pay from August 31 to September 16, according to a summary of the investigative findings and university actions."Although neither Urban Meyer, nor Gene Smith condoned or covered up the alleged domestic abuse by Zach Smith, they failed to take sufficient management action relation to Zach Smith's misconduct and retained an assistant coach who was not performing as an appropriate role model for OSU student-athletes," the summary said.The announcement followed a 10-hour meeting held by the Ohio State University Board of Trustees discussing the job status of the famed football coach and three-time national championship winner.Ohio State put Meyer on paid leave August 1, saying it wanted to investigate exactly what he knew about the allegations leveled against former assistant coach Zach Smith.Ohio State fired Smith on July 23, three days after he was served with a civil protection order on behalf of his ex-wife, Courtney Smith.
